Research and independence from Danzō

Orochimaru pursues eternal life and mastery of all ninjutsu through forbidden research. When his bloodline experiments encounter difficulties, Danzō supplies First Hokage cells and human subjects. Root captures children from neighboring countries, and Orochimaru expands into a laboratory outside Konoha. He also cultivates his own confidants to avoid becoming dependent on Danzō 113.

Their partnership produces results that Orochimaru does not always recognize. Danzō discovers that an apparently discarded experimental subject was actually a success, withholding that knowledge while Orochimaru continues his research 155.

Battlefield command and conflict with Houka

Orochimaru becomes commander of Konoha’s Sunagakure battlefield and defeats the Puppet Corps. He sends Uchiha Houka to deliver sensitive intelligence concerning Sasori’s defection, using the assignment as an open political maneuver against Sunagakure 178.
