Background / History

Cao Lin was the son of Green Garment Gang Leader Cao Ziping and acted as the gang's young leader. During the gang's conflict with the Black Dragon Gang, he traveled to Hanging Pot Medical Hall to recruit Shen Han and Feng Hao to treat his critically injured father. He initially accommodated Shen Han's conditions, promising payment and access to rare medicinal herbs through the gang's merchant connections 39.

At the Green Garment Gang headquarters on Stone Ox Mountain, Cao Lin entrusted Cao Ziping's treatment to Shen Han. He was deeply concerned by his father's condition and reacted angrily to the physicians who had failed to help him. Shen Han's diagnosis identified three devastating palm strikes that had shattered Cao Ziping's meridians 40.

After Shen Han restored Cao Ziping's ability to circulate internal energy, Cao Lin honored the promised payment and supplied twenty-five portions of requested medicinal herbs, personally escorting Shen Han and Feng Hao down the mountain 41 44. However, after learning that Shen Han knew of the gang's forbidden Returning Cloud Pill, he proposed murdering both physicians to prevent the secret from spreading 43.

Cao Lin later arranged for Guan Shu and two women to poison Shen Han and Feng Hao. When the scheme failed, he rejected an immediate pursuit, preferring that the physicians die “under a woman's skirt” rather than through an overt gang attack 45.

Once Shen Han and Feng Hao became liabilities due to their knowledge of the Returning Cloud Pill, Cao Lin argued that only dead witnesses could be trusted 43. He also preferred covert murder through poisoned wine over a direct attack that might create trouble for the Green Garment Gang 45.

In battle, Cao Lin was defiant and unwilling to submit to the Black Dragon Gang, even after being overwhelmed by Du Chong. His resistance ultimately gave way to fear when execution appeared imminent 46.

Cao Lin brought Shen Han to Stone Ox Mountain to treat Cao Ziping's fatal internal injuries. Shen Han's acupuncture and prescriptions restored the gang leader within three days, earning Cao Lin's praise and fulfillment of the agreed payment 40 41 44.

Attempt to Silence Shen Han and Feng Hao

Cao Lin regarded Shen Han's knowledge of the Returning Cloud Pill as a threat to the Green Garment Gang. He urged that Shen Han and Feng Hao be killed, then attempted to have Guan Shu poison them after they left the gang's headquarters 43 45.

Stone Ox Town Ambush and Death

Betrayed by Qin Wu, Cao Lin was ambushed by Du Chong and the Black Dragon Gang in a small courtyard. He was defeated, severely injured, and bound, but Shen Han—under the identity of Mr. Ugly Face—killed Du Chong and freed him 46 47.

Cao Lin tried to recruit his rescuer into the Green Garment Gang and offered protection against Black Dragon Gang retaliation. Shen Han instead killed Cao Lin with a single downward strike, citing Cao Lin's poisoning plot against himself and Feng Hao as the reason 48.
