Background / History
The Devil Race was driven into the harsh Demon Realm after losing the ancient wars against the human coalition. A barrier sealed the route between the Demon Realm and the Surface World, but its weakening every five hundred years historically triggered wars between the two worlds. 1 12
More than three hundred years before Chen Rui's arrival, Emperor White Night Lucifer led the Demon Realm's allied forces in an invasion of the human world. After killing three human powerhouses, White Night was ambushed and slain by a mysterious opponent; the leaderless Devil Race army was defeated and forced back into the Demon Realm. 1 12 368
Four hundred years before the main story, Ge Luofen Beelzebub used the divine artifact God-Devouring Mask to seize Darkmoon Territory and threaten the Fallen Angel Empire. White Night personally defeated him with the Sword of the Fallen Angel, though Ge Luofen escaped and left Darkmoon devastated for centuries. 26 156 172
By the later story, the three surviving empires formed a confederation system intended to replace rivalry with joint development. The alliance subsequently accepted humans, dragons, elves, dwarves, and beastmen as the Abyss threatened both worlds. 883 1141 1269 1283
Environment
The Demon Realm is a vast, harsh world where dark elements are exceptionally active and light elements are sparse. Its sky is obscured by thick clouds and smoke, while its two celestial bodies provide weak light and become cold, violet “moons” at night. Temperatures differ sharply between day and night. 7 626 1228
- Its terrain includes eroded pits, deep caverns, mountain ranges, swamps, underground worlds, and remote wilderness beyond the territories claimed by the three empires. 7 453
- Dangerous magical life is widespread, including Poison Dragons, carnivorous plants, magical beasts, Elementals, Evil Eyes, Gargoyles, and Abyss-related creatures. 7 331 454 768
- Blue Wave Lake is blue because of venom leaking from the Poison Dragon Pagliu, who slept beneath it for thousands of years; its waters contain no living creatures, and much of its surrounding plant life is poisonous or carnivorous. 7
- The underground world beneath Xilang Mountain contains the Earth Domain and Earth Elementals, as well as Minotaur, Medusa, cave-dweller, and wyvern territories. 156 160 172
- The Demon Realm is not fully settled; extensive regions beyond imperial borders remain undeveloped because its population has not required further expansion. 453
Artificial Moons
During the Abyss crisis, Chen Rui and his collaborators developed artificial moons using magical arrays, Ancient Rune Language, and reflected light and heat. Their appearance restored illumination, reduced panic, and became a symbol of hope for the realm's inhabitants. 1283
Peoples and Creatures
| Group | Known traits |
|---|---|
| Scythe Demons / Greater Devils | The highest-ranking common demon race beneath royal families; naturally powerful warriors able to cultivate physical strength, mental power, or both. Their normal limit is High-Rank Demon, though bloodline mutants can exceed it. 5 |
| Horned Demons | Physically strong and fearless; commonly serve as vanguard troops and may become capable blacksmiths. 5 |
| Servant Demons | Physically frail but naturally gifted in magic; some can command magical beasts. 5 |
| Dark Goblins | Small and weak in direct combat, but highly creative in handicrafts, construction, invention, and alchemical artificing. 5 |
| Elementals | Self-aware beings condensed from natural elemental power. Their strength depends heavily on their environment and elemental concentration. 160 419 |
| Evil Eyes | Floating, tentacled creatures with powerful spiritual perception and ray attacks that can carry negative effects or partially bypass defenses. 331 |
| Dragons | Powerful independent beings, including Poison, Crystal, Black, Emerald, and Fairy Dragons. Dragons residing in the Demon Realm are called the “Fallen Dragon Race” by the Surface World, though many simply chose the realm as their home. 7 626 |
The Twin Moons prevent mixed-blood descendants among Demon Realm races: children of parents from different races are born as either the father's or mother's race. 5
Power Structure
| Tier | Realms | Requirements and significance |
|---|---|---|
| Low tier | Low-tier Demon, Mid-tier Demon, High-Rank Demon | The foundation of Demon Realm cultivation. Higher realms exert rank suppression over lower ones. 12 136 |
| Middle tier | Demon King, Great Devil King | Requires comprehension and practical command of a power's “rules.” 136 170 |
| High tier | Demon Emperor, Devil Emperor | Defined by comprehension of domains; the divide between Great Devil King and Demon Emperor is especially vast. 239 277 293 |
| Super-tier | Kingdomized powerhouse, demigod, pseudo-god | Begins with transforming a domain into a kingdom. Higher stages involve believers, Faith Armor, and eventually an embryonic divine spark. 586 703 |
| Legendary terminology | Demon Venerable / Demon Sovereign | Terms used for powers beyond the ordinary Devil Emperor level; the exact highest classifications are understood differently across eras. 12 577 |
A realm's military power is not determined solely by individual strength. Demon Kings and Demon Emperors function as strategic weapons, but trained legions, mage formations, and coordinated warfare can threaten stronger opponents. 498 528
Government and Political Order
Three Great Empires
After the decline of the original seven royal families, three great royal lines remained in balance for tens of thousands of years. 12 181
| Empire | Ruling Royal Family | Notable ruler |
|---|---|---|
| Fallen Angel Empire | Lucifer Royal Family | Empress Shea Lucifer 12 1126 |
| Blood Fiend Empire | Mammon Royal Family | Emperor Lei Chan Mammon 12 213 |
| Shadow Empire | Asmodeus Royal Family | Empress Catherine 12 1126 |
The surviving royal families possess inherited bloodline talents and divine artifacts with independent wills. Recognition by a divine artifact is normally reserved for an emperor or supreme ruler, though rare exceptions may become the artifact's eventual masters. 12 123
The Demon Realm's imperial noble hierarchy is:
Confederation System
The Confederation System was proposed as an alliance between the three empires, allowing them to develop in peace rather than exhaust themselves through recurring conflict. Catherine advocated admitting declining royal families into the system to reduce unrest, while Lei Chan initially favored suppressing those who refused to submit. 880 883
By the time of the alchemy symposium, the Demon Realm had become a Unified Alliance, with Agulie—Chen Rui's public identity—as consort to the rulers of all three empires. 1126 1141
Society and Development
The Devil Race historically values martial strength above commerce and economics. Demon Realm propaganda emphasizes the humiliation of past defeats and portrays the Surface World as prosperous and desirable, reinforcing the desire to reclaim it. 239
Despite Surface World depictions of the realm as a savage wasteland, it possesses its own races, cities, commerce, craftsmanship, political institutions, and civilization. By the later story, visiting human-world Grandmasters find its prosperity comparable to that of the Surface World. 239 1141
Technology and Culture
- Ancient Rune Language — A near-lost “language of gods” used in ancient artifacts, seals, magic arrays, and advanced research. 80 368 449
- Alchemy and artificing — Dark Goblin craftsmanship, potion-making, magical equipment, and Construct War Puppets are major sources of technological development. 5 859
- Endless Warrior OL — A realm-wide magic game that functions as both entertainment and cultivation training, allowing even weak races to operate combat puppets and participate in simulated battles. 776 777
- Battle Ball and tournaments — Competitive leagues, empire-wide martial tournaments, military contests, academy exchanges, and Grand Games become major shared institutions. 914 1281
- Royal Academies — The three great Royal Academies eventually reach a scale and facility standard comparable to renowned human-world academies. 1125
