Hagrid had never kept a Kneazle, and he wasn't even at Hogwarts the day Slytherin House had their Flying Class!
The reason Harry said that was entirely to pique her interest, while simultaneously finding a suitable excuse for crossing the grounds during the Slytherin Flying Class!
So... he went to the grounds on purpose, stood up for Neville on purpose, started that brawl on purpose... and beat Malfoy and the others into serious injuries on purpose!!
And his goal...
Recalling the snippet of conversation she overheard between Harry and Filch in the kitchen that night, how could the clever Hermione fail to guess it now?
It turned out Harry never wanted to attend Hogwarts at all; everything he did had a different motive!
Burning the Sorting Hat, beating up Peeves, taking on the entire first year of Slytherin House alone, defying heaven and earth, professors, and even the Headmaster...
All the "heroic feats" since his enrollment were not, as it turned out, simply to protect her.
The reason he was acting out so wildly was actually to get expelled!
And what's more... to drag her down into getting expelled with him!!
Why would he do this...
During the Charms Class the next day, anyone with eyes could see that Hermione's mood was off.
Hermione, who usually scrambled to sit in the front row, sat alone in a corner this time, appearing completely unwilling to pay attention to anyone.
"Hermione... what's wrong?" Harry was very worried about Hermione's situation, yet Hermione didn't want to talk to him at all.
"I don't need your concern! Stay away from me!!" Harry was left completely bewildered after his well-intentioned concern was met with a lecture.
However, Professor Flitwick had already arrived by then, so Harry had no choice but to focus on the class first.
"Hermione is really acting strange... did I make her angry these past two days?"
During class, Harry remained deeply concerned about Hermione's state while constantly reflecting on where he could have offended this girl recently.
Everything was fine when they parted yesterday noon, but today she suddenly started sulking... she didn't even scramble to answer questions, which was just too absurd!
Could it be that time of the month... but she's only so young, it shouldn't be this early, right~
Strange~
"Miss Granger doesn't seem to be doing very well? A pity, I was hoping she could demonstrate the Levitation Charm for everyone." Professor Flitwick's voice drifted from the podium. The old professor noticed Hermione's poor mood and had no choice but to turn to Harry, "I wonder how Mr. Granger is doing? Could you demonstrate it for everyone?"
"This..." Looking at the expectation in Flitwick's eyes, Harry hesitated for a moment before turning to Hermione with a sheepish grin, "Hermione, can I borrow your wand..."
"No!!" To everyone's surprise, Hermione snapped at Harry right in front of everyone!
"You used Ron Weasley's wand just fine before, I think you can use anyone's wand, can't you?! Besides, you never cared about losing house points anyway. If you don't want to attend class properly, just say so; there's no need to use the wand as an excuse!!"
"Hermione, how exactly did I offend you?" Being lectured and pointed at time and again, Harry's expression finally darkened.
This girl must have taken the wrong medicine today; her unprovoked anger hadn't even subsided yet!
"You know perfectly well why!!" Hermione slammed her hand on the desk and pointed at the tip of Harry's nose, questioning him sharply.
At the corners of her eyes, Harry even saw a glimmer of crystal-clear tears!
Chapter 59: Malfoy Really Brought This Upon Himself (2/10)
What on earth was wrong with Hermione?
After seeing Hermione's tears, Harry's mind was filled with questions, leaving him no room to care about anything else.
Yet, there was always someone who loved to court disaster at a time like this.
"Heh heh! Harry, it looks like you've been dumped by your sweetheart. How about this, if you don't have a wand, why don't you use mine for now?"
After a harsh, sinister laugh, a broken wand that had been crudely stuck back together was tossed spinning in front of Harry.
"Malfoy..."
Harry looked over with a dark face, only to find this guy, who was always at odds with him, wearing a look of gloating satisfaction.
That scoundrel Malfoy seemed to be getting a bit cocky again lately~
For an eleven or twelve-year-old child, no matter how deep their family background, their depth of character was ultimately limited.
Although his recent mood swings weren't obvious to other students, they couldn't escape Harry's eyes.
After his father failed to cause trouble at Hogwarts, Malfoy had indeed quieted down for a while, but recently he had shown signs of resurgence, starting to jump around again.
It looked like he had encountered something that made him very happy...
"What's wrong, Harry? Are you worried about failing? Haha, aren't you the legendary first-year god of war, rumored to be able to defeat the entire first year of the school with a broken wand?!"
Look, he even had the leisure to provoke him now~
"Harry..."
Hermione, still in the heat of her anger, hesitated. Seeing the trend of another conflict between Harry and Malfoy, she knew this wasn't the time for her to be temperamental.
But just as she wanted to hand her wand to Harry, the latter had already picked up Malfoy's broken wand.
"Then I'll use this one." Harry glanced nonchalantly at the Hawthorn Wand he had snapped himself, and casually tossed away the broken front end.
A broken wand could not be used again after a simple repair, because the fracture would cause the magical circuit to become chaotic, which in turn would cause the spells cast by the wizard to backfire and rebound onto themselves.
Malfoy was clearly trying to use this to frame Harry, and Harry was certainly not going to fall for it.
As for the drawback that using half a wand would drastically reduce the effectiveness of spells, this was absolutely not a problem for Harry.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
With a flick and a twitch of his wrist, Harry successfully cast the Levitation Charm using the wand Malfoy had broken in two, manipulating the feather in front of him until it flew straight to the ceiling.
"Oh, that is simply marvelous! Mr. Granger's performance is worth ten points to Ravenclaw!"
The look Professor Flitwick gave Harry was filled with admiration; he found that Harry could bring him brand-new surprises every single time!
"Thank you for your praise, Professor."
Harry bowed slightly to thank Flitwick, yet when he looked toward Malfoy, the humility on his face turned directly into a cold sneer.
"Keep your rotten wand and your rotten self to yourself!"
Harry tossed the broken wand back to Malfoy with a casual flick of his hand.
"Damn it! Harry, you just wait, I'll make you pay for this sooner or later!!" Malfoy scrambled to block the half-wand flying toward him, his naturally pale complexion flushing with a hint of red due to his anger.
He failed again!
Malfoy slammed his desk in resentment. Harry had actually managed to cast the Levitation Charm perfectly with a broken piece of junk—this was something he hadn't even dared to imagine!
Could this broken thing... really still be used?
Thinking this, he skeptically waved the half-wand in his hand, but all he saw was a burst of red light suddenly erupting from the broken shaft!
BOOM!!
A violent explosion rang out abruptly in the classroom, followed by bursts of pained groans!
Everyone in the class looked toward the sound in shock, only to see that Malfoy's desk had been blown open by a large hole for some reason, while he himself lay in a pile of wood shavings and debris, wailing incessantly while clutching his blood-soaked arm!
"What on earth just happened? Hurry! Get Malfoy to Madam Pomfrey immediately!!"
Professor Flitwick was shocked at the sight and hurriedly had two students from Slytherin House help Malfoy up from the ground.
"It was Harry... it was him!" Malfoy's face was twisted in pain, his gray-white eyes glaring at Harry through gritted teeth. "It was this bastard, he tampered with my wand... ugh!"
As he was being carried out of the classroom, Malfoy cursed Harry heart-wrenchingly, bright red blood dripping continuously from his right hand and leaving a winding trail on the floor.
"Mr. Granger, regarding this matter, you had better provide an explanation..."
"You did it on purpose, didn't you?" Just as Professor Flitwick looked at Harry in a dilemma, Hermione had already widened her eyes and coldly issued her interrogation.
"Hermione, listen to me... I can't say this has absolutely nothing to do with me, but Malfoy really brought this on himself just now. I didn't intend to hurt him."
Harry frowned as he offered his explanation; he truly hadn't planned to sabotage Malfoy this time—the unlucky kid had simply walked right into the line of fire.
"And you still say you didn't?" Hermione's angry scream suddenly filled the entire classroom; she didn't believe a word Harry said!
"Do you dare say this wasn't something you planned in advance? Tampering with the wand, injuring Malfoy, and then finding an opportunity to get expelled for violating rules... just like in the Flying Class before?! Harry... how much longer are you going to lie to me!!"
"You're angry because you knew about this?" Suddenly, Harry's heart sank.
Hermione actually knew his intentions?
And... lying to her?
When had he ever lied to her?
"Harry, you have disappointed me so much!!!"
Hermione was trembling with rage. Her hand at her side wanted to lift several times, but in the end, she only shoved past Harry forcefully, covered her face, and ran out the door.
As they brushed past each other, a tear she had flung off landed gently on Harry's face...
It was very cold, a feeling that chilled him to the bone.
"Hermione!!" Harry wanted to chase after her immediately, but Professor Flitwick raised his hand to block him.
"Harry, you had best not go." Professor Flitwick shook his head, his expression becoming quite serious. "I trust your character, but you must first provide a reasonable explanation for what happened here. I know there may be a misunderstanding between you and Miss Granger, but rather than looking for Miss Granger while she is in the heat of the moment, it would be better to find a way to prove your innocence first; the misunderstanding will naturally resolve itself then."
"Furthermore, I am shocked by the talk of wanting to 'drop out' that Miss Granger mentioned, and I am also very urgently hoping that you can give me an answer... that will not disappoint me!"
"Professor... I think you had better take me to see Headmaster Dumbledore. Why I don't have a wand of my own, and the cause of what just happened—he should be able to explain it all to you."
Hmph, Harry didn't believe for a second that Dumbledore hadn't received a word from Ollivander...
Yet he had kept these things hidden and never said a word!!
Chapter 60: Adults harbor arrogance toward children (3/10)
"This matter is a misunderstanding, Filius. I am quite certain that Harry did not intend to harm Draco."
Sure enough, after Flitwick brought Harry to the headmaster's office once again, Dumbledore immediately vouched for his 'innocence'.
"My old friend Garrick Ollivander wrote to me previously, mentioning a few interesting things that happened with Harry at his wand shop. In short, aside from Hermione's Holly Wand, it is best if we try to avoid letting Harry come into contact with other people's wands."
Dumbledore rubbed his temples; matters involving Harry often produced variables beyond his expectations, which couldn't help but make him feel quite weary.
Ollivander mentioned in his letter that Harry's conviction was strong enough to influence the choice of a wand with his own emotions, but in Dumbledore's view, Ollivander's understanding wasn't actually thorough enough.
Harry likely possessed an unparalleled affinity for magic, an affinity that allowed him to have a more perfect compatibility with magical objects. That was why he could hear the Sorting Hat's tangled mutterings when it was screening those difficult students, and why he could intervene just before Hermione was about to be sorted into Gryffindor.
Likewise, this trait also made it easier for Harry to gain the recognition of a wand; he could easily use the vast majority of wands, even those belonging to other wizards.
Ollivander remained too stubborn regarding the philosophy that 'the wand chooses the wizard,' so he never dared to imagine that Harry could be a wizard who broke the mold—a wizard capable of actively choosing his own wand!
Returning to the main point, the ability to use any wand indiscriminately was undoubtedly convenient for Harry, but for other wizards, it was not necessarily a good thing.
Because once Harry used their wands, the wands would likely be influenced by Harry's emotions and engage in extremely intense acts of betrayal against their masters!
Just like that broken Hawthorn Wand belonging to Malfoy, it would rather destroy itself completely than ever allow its former master, Malfoy, to use it again!
"But Albus, I don't understand..." Professor Flitwick asked, puzzled, "Harry has used Mr. Weasley's wand before; why didn't Mr. Weasley suffer a betrayal from his wand?"
"Filius, I believe that might be because of your Disarming Charm," Dumbledore said after a moment of thought. "Ron's wand was disarmed from Harry's hand, so Harry's emotions had little influence on it. Furthermore, that wand has served the Weasley family for a long time, so its attachment to Ron is naturally deep-rooted."
"So that's how it is. It seems Miss Granger and I both wronged Harry..." Upon learning that Harry was innocent, Flitwick felt happy, yet he also fell into deep self-reproach. "When it comes down to it, this is all my fault. If I hadn't inappropriately asked Harry to demonstrate the Levitation Charm, and if I had been able to stop Malfoy's provocation toward Harry in time, perhaps none of this would have happened..."
"Professor, this is not your fault!" Harry frowned and comforted him. "Just like me, you had no idea beforehand!"
"Harry is right, Filius, this is not your fault." Dumbledore spoke up calmly to persuade him as well. "Although it might be unfair to Draco to say this, there is truly no need for anyone to take responsibility for this matter; it was merely a regrettable accident..."
What?!
Did Dumbledore just say... there was no need for anyone to take responsibility for this?
Harry scrutinized Dumbledore's face, not even letting a single change in his wrinkles escape, as if he wanted to confirm in this way... whether the man still had any sense of shame.
Wasn't the root cause of this matter you?
You had already received a letter from Ollivander and had long known about the unique nature of my condition, yet you kept it hidden and said nothing?!
Harry had been completely ignorant of the fact that he could cause other people's wands to betray them, yet Dumbledore had been perfectly aware of it.
However, under these circumstances, he had not issued a warning to any of the professors in advance, nor had he told anyone—not even Harry himself...
What kind of accidents would occur if he used a wand other than his own Holly wand!
