Nature and Origin
Daemons are Warp entities formed from the Chaos Gods, the worship of specific races, or powerful emotions and concepts. Humanity's fear, anger, desire, and sorrow all create ripples in the Warp that contribute to such entities. 25 124
The Warp is governed by hunger, greed, and survival of the fittest. Daemons will take increasingly extreme risks to acquire souls, with sufficiently vast numbers of souls capable of drawing even the Chaos Gods into direct competition. 471
Some Daemons began as mortals elevated through the favor of the Chaos Gods. Such ascended beings possess physical strength and durability far beyond ordinary humans or Astra Militarum troops. 6
Appearance
Daemons have no single fixed form. They may appear as grotesque monsters, shadowy predators, nightmare-born creatures, or even convincing impersonations of familiar people. 147 174 301
- Their forms are often unique and shaped by nightmares, malevolent thoughts, or Warp corruption. 247 301
- Some manifest with wings, horns, multiple eyes, tentacles, unnatural flames, or bodies of flesh combined with Warp-metal. 267 463
- Daemons can disguise themselves and manipulate perception; one impersonated the Emperor to deceive Guilliman. 174
- Their presence can corrupt or overwhelm mortal minds, especially without protective equipment or Warp defenses. 147 301
Abilities & Characteristics
Warp Manifestation
Daemons require a sufficient connection between the Warp and realspace to take physical form. Before the Great Rift, maintaining a manifestation demanded immense energy and was usually temporary. 186
- Warp rifts, rituals, sacrifices, and weakened boundaries between realities allow daemons to enter the material universe. 86 157 237
- The Great Rift made sustained daemonic activity and influence substantially easier. 186 190
- A daemon that loses its physical form is generally banished back to the Warp rather than permanently destroyed. 109 186
- Daemons can possess machines to gain more stable bodies, creating Daemon Engines such as Heldrakes. 186
Corruption and Deception
Daemons exploit mortal desire for power, immortality, revenge, or salvation. Their influence can turn humans into cultists, traitors, and beings pursuing daemon ascension. 124 148
- They can infiltrate guarded locations through false identities, implanted thoughts, and altered perceptions. 146
- Daemonic whispers and visions can inflict agony, panic, or mental corruption on psykers and ordinary soldiers alike. 147 248
- Some manipulate cultists into performing rituals that open Warp rifts, though the summoned entities may not fulfill their worshippers' expectations. 99 237
- Daemons may cooperate with Chaos traitors during invasions but are also willing to betray one another for advantage. 25 325
Combat Power
Daemon strength varies drastically. Greater Daemons can threaten planets, star systems, and elite Imperial forces, while ordinary daemons can still overwhelm defenders through numbers and terror. 6 163
- Greater Daemons are powerful enough that their appearance on a world may warrant Exterminatus. 6
- Conventional weapons may destroy a daemon's manifested body without eliminating its essence. 109
- Anti-@@REF_ENTITY_11397653@@ fields, Warp Firewalls, blessed weapons, and the Emperor's power can weaken, banish, or annihilate daemons. 109 123 284
- The Emperor's Sword can burn a daemon's essence to ash, making it a direct threat even to powerful Warp entities. 99
Known Types and Examples
- Greater Daemons — exceptionally powerful Warp entities. A Greater Daemon under Tzeentch, the Changeling, infiltrated the Rock and killed Dark Angels despite their security measures. 146
- Nurgle Daemons / Plague Daemons — entities associated with disease and decay; one led a daemonic invasion of Macragge. 25 26
- Tzeentchian Daemons — entities associated with change, sorcery, illusion, and fire; Kairos Fateweaver is identified as one such daemon. 190 267
- Daemon Princes — elevated daemons of exceptional status and power, including Cherubael and Vashtorr. 127 521
- Daemon Engines — daemons forcibly bound into machines through dark rituals and forbidden technology. Their machine bodies grant longer-lasting physical presence but also bind their fate to the vessel. 186
