Gaia's Fear and Resolve

Gaia could not help tightening her lips.

To be honest, she was somewhat afraid of these Untouchables now.

Before this, Gaia had felt some pity for these people forced to live underground. All she knew of them was that they had pointed ears, large eyes, and learned very quickly.

Castel did not lack geniuses. Yami had once finished an entire advanced math course in just a few days, but he was the only one.

Yet among these Untouchables, the entire race was exceptionally gifted at learning.

They were hardly learning at all—they simply poured knowledge straight into their heads. No matter how complex a theory was, they could grasp the gist after hearing it once. Talk to them a little more, and they would understand it completely. Give them more time, and they could even turn around and teach you.

It was the first time Gaia had felt so powerless. She was considered clever herself, yet before these little people, she could only feel ashamed of her own inadequacy.

And this was not even the limit of the Untouchables' abilities.

Only after they entered the factories did they truly display their terrifying talent.

Gaia recalled the first day they had visited a factory.

For safety reasons, Gaia had not taken them to any particularly important facilities. She had only brought them to several steam engine assembly plants that were about to be phased out.

That was practically Castel's most outdated production capacity, scarcely more advanced than a handcraft workshop. Feeling perfectly at ease, Gaia had allowed them to try their hands at some of the scrap parts.

Then Gaia witnessed a scene she would never forget for the rest of her life.

It was the scrap room, filled entirely with defective parts meant to be melted down and remade.
