Background / History
Nora originated in the White Crow Duchy of the Northern Territory and served as a Burier of the Silent Temple. She came to Castel to negotiate for land where the temple's followers and Northern Territory refugees could settle, persisting even while believing Castel's ruler had been corrupted by an evil god. Her overriding goal was to secure a home for her people, whatever the personal cost. 40 302 549
During the refugee crisis, Nora gathered large numbers of displaced Northerners and hid with them in forests after three northern grand dukes harassed the group through its vulnerable civilians. The Silent Temple later abandoned the Resistance Army, while Nora remained with the refugees and became their protector and leader. 302 399 408
Nora broke with—or was expelled from—the Silent Temple after its abandonment of the resistance. The refugees continued to regard her, rather than the institution, as their true temple: she had sheltered them, organized their survival, and fought for them when the temple would not. 302 408 604
In a battle against the Winter Wolf Guard, Nora was decapitated. Her severed head was sent to Castel as proof of her death, but a Burier's immortality left her alive. Her headless body continued fighting independently, reportedly scattering enemy forces and returning alone. Nora's apparent death became a symbol of the Northern lords' brutality and helped drive Castel to war. 397 398 425 486
Appearance
Nora is a very short, white-haired girl whose serious bearing gives her a presence far greater than her stature. Before her decapitation, she was usually seen in meticulously maintained white Icefield Heavy Armor. 397
- White hair and pale white pupils. 38
- Usually stern-faced and composed; she rarely smiles. 397
- Formerly wore scarred but carefully maintained white Icefield Heavy Armor, often with chainmail beneath it. 51 397
- Carried a tower shield and chain censers resembling meteor hammers. 37 397
- After decapitation, her head and body became separate entities known as Little Nora and Big Nora. 812
- As Little Nora, she can move by using Transcendence to bounce herself through the Sea of Unconsciousness. 837
Personality
Nora is quiet, sincere, and intensely responsible. She treats people with practical kindness, helping Castel's villagers and poor residents despite her own difficulties, while her protection of Northern Territory refugees repeatedly places her in danger. 398
Her seriousness is tempered by stubbornness and a dry, understated humor. She is meticulous even as a severed head—maintaining her room, bathing after battle, changing her hairpin as “clothes,” and caring for a wildflower from the battlefield. 837
Nora has a profound attachment to the Northern Territory despite its suffering. She wants to rebuild it into “the next Castel,” so future children will not starve, freeze, or be sent to war. Later, after the Silent Temple merges into Castel, she chooses to fight for herself rather than solely as a representative of an organization. 798 940
Abilities & Skills
Burier Immortality
As a Burier, Nora bears immortality as the price of her office. Decapitation does not kill her, though it leaves her body and head in an abnormal, divided state. 397
- Continued living after her head was severed. 397
- Her headless body retained combat ability, endurance, and limited independent consciousness. 458 523
- She is difficult to stop with ordinary gunfire and is described as having no conventional weakness while separated from her head. 486
- Her immortality is portrayed as a burden as much as an advantage; Nora has accepted the possibility that she may never die cleanly. 522
Burier Combat and Silent Temple Rites
Nora was a frontline fighter before becoming headless, combining heavy armor, defensive equipment, and Silent Temple ritual implements.
- Used a tower shield and heavy Icefield Armor to protect others in battle. 397 514
- Wielded chain censers and flails for combat, healing, warding off evil, and “preaching.” 397 604
- Could endure prolonged combat as a tireless heavy-armored warrior until faced with firearms. 799
- Covers artillery shells with Silent Temple scripture, treating shellfire as a new form of preaching. 837
Independent Body Connection
Nora's head and body could be physically reunited but initially remained separate consciousnesses. Theus's blood temporarily allowed Nora to control Big Nora through a relay-like connection. 523 524
- Big Nora independently seeks out and protects Little Nora. 525
- The blood connection has limited duration and requires further testing. 525
- Big Nora can act on instinct even without Little Nora's direct control. 523 814
- Their proximity can improve Big Nora's coordination and responsiveness. 815
Machine Soul Synchronization
Nora became one of the first Transcendents to pilot self-propelled artillery by connecting her will to a Machine Soul through the Sea of Unconsciousness. 802 904
- Can direct the vehicle's movement, aim, loading, and firing through intent. 801 802
- Describes the artillery as a steel body that lets her stand upon the earth and fight again. 802
- Helped destroy Steam Tanks alongside Gwen, turning the tide of a battle. 814
- Possesses extensive battlefield experience as an artillery pilot. 904
