Background / History

Jiraiya graduated twelve years before Team 7's formation alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru, with Hiruzen Sarutobi as their jonin instructor. Known as a civilian genius, he became one of Konoha's standout young jonin. 3

At Hiruzen's request, Jiraiya became a jonin instructor for a graduating team. He had specifically sought Minato Namikaze as a student; when Hiruzen signaled for Akashi Uchiha to be added, Jiraiya interpreted the order by removing Hiruzen's own son from the previously planned lineup. 3

Although initially uncomfortable with Akashi's Uchiha pride, Jiraiya took responsibility for his first team. He introduced its members to the Hokage Rock and taught that becoming Hokage requires gaining everyone's recognition; he also stated his own ambition to become a bestselling author. 4 5
