Yan is forthright, competitive, and confident in his own talent. He challenges Xiao Chen to verify the rumors surrounding his Twin Martial Souls, but offers to handle trouble caused by jealous peers regardless of the spar's outcome. He bears no true malice and views a powerful Xiao Chen as a comrade rather than a rival to be excluded. 24 25

Although initially jealous of Xiao Chen's closeness to Hu Liena, Yan does not allow that jealousy to become resentment. After losing the spar, he readily concedes, acknowledges Xiao Chen's strength, and commits to competing fairly in the future. 25 26

Yan challenges Xiao Chen outside Spirit City, initially intending to suppress his Spirit Power but ultimately fighting at full strength. Despite using Hell Lava Rush, Granite Rock, Hell Flame, and Lava Surge, he cannot reach Xiao Chen through the latter's ranged attacks and mobility.
