Background / History
Jiraiya is one of Konoha’s famed Three Ninja alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. The title originated during the Great Ninja War, when all three failed to defeat Hanzō of the Salamander; Jiraiya regards it less as an honor than a reminder of that defeat. 33 85
During his time in Amegakure, Jiraiya took in Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan. Years later, he learns that Pain—the leader revered by Amegakure’s population and the head of Akatsuki—is connected to those former pupils. He recognizes the Deva Path’s face as Yahiko’s, while Konan still addresses him as her former sensei. 85 87 88
Following the Third Hokage’s death, Jiraiya is involved in bringing Tsunade back to Konoha to become the Fifth Hokage. He declines the office for himself, believing his free-spirited nature makes him unfit to serve as Hokage. 28 33
Personality
Jiraiya alternates between shamelessly lecherous comedy and serious professional discipline. He visits bars and nightclubs while supposedly gathering intelligence, eagerly tries to use Jimo’s camera-equipped puppet for voyeurism, and is routinely rebuked by Tsunade and Jimo for his behavior. 30 84
When Konoha or his students are endangered, he becomes focused, perceptive, and resolute. He accepts the danger of investigating Pain, prioritizes Naruto’s growth, and recognizes when an opponent’s abilities require careful planning rather than direct force. 50 83 87 88
He places particular weight on endurance and masculine resolve, suppressing his regret over Tsunade in order to continue his mission. 83

Story Role / Major Arcs
Training Naruto and Jimo
Jiraiya offers Naruto and Jimo the Mount Myōboku summoning contract, then later takes them on the mission to locate Tsunade. During the journey, he begins Naruto’s Rasengan training and permits Jimo to learn alongside him. 23 28 30
Jimo’s rapid progress repeatedly shocks him: Jimo bursts the training balloons immediately and reveals a Wind Release Rasengan before Naruto has completed the first stage. Jiraiya nevertheless recognizes Jimo as a useful teacher for Naruto and leaves Naruto’s rubber-ball training in Jimo’s care. 30 31
Amegakure Infiltration
After locating Akatsuki’s leader, Jiraiya prepares to infiltrate Amegakure despite Tsunade’s objections. He ultimately works with Jimo, using disguises, a Scout Toad, and interrogation to identify Pain’s location in the western tower. 82 83 84
He defeats and restrains Konan, learns that Pain is tied to his former pupils, and joins Jimo against Pain’s paths. After determining that Pain’s abilities demand a more prepared response, the pair escapes and reports Pain’s identity and threat to Tsunade. 86 87 88
Pain’s Assault on Konoha
When Pain attacks Konoha, Jiraiya and Naruto fight Pain’s summoning animals while Jimo confronts the paths directly. He later assists Naruto in defeating the Deva Path through a coordinated Kamehameha and Rasenshuriken attack. 93 99
Fourth Shinobi World War
Jiraiya serves with the Five Kage battle unit during the Allied Forces conflict and helps coordinate the fight against Madara. He witnesses Jimo permanently damage Madara’s Impure World Reincarnation body, then gathers Sage Chakra to rejoin the battlefield alongside Orochimaru. 141 160 193
