Background and Story Role
Shu Mountain Hall Master
Bai Jing True Person serves as Shu Mountain’s Artifact Refining Hall Master on Sixth Peak. Chen Fan first encounters him as the Yellow-toothed Old Man, a Golden Core cultivator who claims he descended the mountain merely for amusement. He invites Chen Fan for a drink before abruptly leaving when Bald Bird exposes his dishonesty. 88
He becomes fascinated by a damaged Spirit Treasure sphere he discovers during a Shu Mountain sacrificial ceremony. Although he initially does not know its name, Bald Bird identifies it as an Artifact Heart—an object combining talisman techniques and artifact refinement that can turn ordinary materials into Spirit Treasures. 130 131
Bai Jing attempts to recruit Chen Fan into Sixth Peak, offering him access to the Artifact Refining Hall. Chen Fan declines the invitation but remains willing to discuss artifact refinement with him. 131
Pursuit of the Artifact Heart
His obsession with Artifact Hearts drives him to seek Seven-Star Grass and Seven-Star Stone, the principal material for refining them. He trades Chen Fan a swindled human-skin concealment mask in return for help completing the Artifact Heart’s talisman runes. 131 137
After seeing Chen Fan and Bald Bird’s half-finished Artifact Heart, Old Yellow Tooth offers the extremely rare Three-Colored Flower for a chance to inspect it. He then immediately accepts Bald Bird as his “master” in exchange for instruction, later offering stolen spiritual herbs as further payment. 140
Though he initially lacks confidence in his talisman aptitude, he studies the path for years and follows Bald Bird in hopes of learning the complete Artifact Heart method. 142 143 228 229
Travels with Chen Fan
Old Yellow Tooth accompanies Chen Fan and Bald Bird west in pursuit of a treasure foretold by the Six Paths Jade Disk. He initially feigns illness to avoid the journey, but enthusiastically agrees once Bald Bird promises Artifact Heart instruction and mentions the treasure. 228
During the Deep Sea Dragon Palace expedition, he fights beside Chen Fan against Shu Mountain monks and demonstrates his swordsmanship through numerous sword phantoms. He later recognizes clues to Chen Fan’s identity but keeps them secret. 232 234
After learning that an imperishable Monster Beast finger remains sealed beneath the Bronze Hall, he returns to Shu Mountain to report the danger and arrange contact with the upper realm. He also escorts Mu Yunshui away from Heavenly Sand City to prevent gossip about her condition. 261 309 310
Exile and Ancient Tomb
Old Yellow Tooth eventually leaves Shu Mountain after swindling the wrong person and becoming the target of retaliation. By this point, he possesses a stolen Void Talisman, one of only two remaining in the world. 600
Inside an Ancient Tomb, he acquires one of the Yin-Yang Keys needed to open a stone gate, evades Shu Mountain pursuers with a concealment talisman, and joins Chen Fan in claiming the treasures behind the gate. He stores a jade chest of ancient spirit herbs and accompanies Chen Fan after the genuine Six Paths Jade Disk activates. 608 609 614 615
When they emerge far from the Four Divine Continents, he and Chen Fan cross the boundless sea together, investigate the East and South Sea Regions, and eventually return toward the Eastern Wasteland aboard a Ghost Ship made from an Ink Dragon’s body. 616 617 638 640 642
Later Activities
Old Yellow Tooth repeatedly aids Chen Fan despite his greed. During the Heaven-Burning Art backlash, he immediately empties a Storage Ring containing over a hundred ancient spirit herbs to sustain Chen Fan. 683
He continues traveling with Chen Fan and Bald Bird while they recover Bald Bird’s scattered souls, investigate Magic Arrays, and prepare to use the Nine Nether Soul-Gathering Array. 680 682 685 689
Years later, he and Bald Bird operate a gambling stall at the Heavenly Prodigy Battlefield, swindling passing cultivators. 721
Appearance
Old Yellow Tooth is a skinny elderly cultivator whose most recognizable feature is his mouthful of conspicuously yellow teeth. His clothes vary sharply with his circumstances, ranging from a filthy, worn Daoist robe and whisk to luxurious merchant-like clothing. 600 634
- Mouthful of yellow teeth, often exposed in a broad grin. 228 600
- Commonly described as skinny or scrawny. 309 600
- Can project a convincing substitute body using a jade pearl. 335
- Frequently carries Storage Rings filled with spiritual herbs, talismans, and acquired valuables. 140 683
Personality
Old Yellow Tooth is shameless, opportunistic, and highly adaptable. He regularly pretends to be righteous, sick, forgetful, or concerned for the public good whenever it benefits him. He calls himself fair and transparent while attempting to swindle strangers, and he has a reputation among Shu Mountain’s hall masters for cheating them. 200 228 242 270
His greed is especially apparent around spiritual herbs, artifacts, and treasure sites. He will bargain during emergencies, loot defeated enemies, and readily abandon dignity to gain knowledge of Artifact Hearts. 140 242 619
Despite this, he is not wholly selfish. He treats serious threats with appropriate gravity, protects people he considers connected to him, and gives up his privately hoarded ancient herbs when Chen Fan’s life is at risk. 261 325 614 683
