Background / History

Arisu grew up with a frail constitution. Hoshino En deduces that she rarely went outside as a child and received her education at home from private tutors. Her father is Kōdo Ikusei’s chairman, but she firmly states that her placement in Class A resulted from a fair school review rather than favoritism 9 11.

As a child, she observed Ayanokoji Kiyotaka defeating other children at the White Room. Watching him inspired her to begin playing chess and eventually seek a direct victory over the institution’s “ultimate masterpiece.” When she addresses him at school, she identifies the interval since that encounter as eight years and ninety days; Ayanokoji does not remember her because their acquaintance was one-sided 18 43.

Class A’s cautious approach to preserving its advantage leaves her bored with school competition. Meeting Hoshino restores her enthusiasm: she recognizes him as a genius capable of challenging her and makes defeating him a personal goal 8.

Appearance

  • Build: Petite and short, with a delicate appearance. She objects to being treated as a child because of her height or figure 5 44.
  • Hair: Short silver hair 5.
  • Eyes: Violet, described as resembling violet crystals 104.
  • Complexion: Exceptionally pale, a feature Hoshino uses when deducing her longstanding physical frailty 9.
  • Clothing: School uniform, a small beret—white in the library scene—and thigh-high stockings 5 9 87.
  • Movement: Usually walks with a cane; without another person’s assistance, her gait is described as limping 130.

Personality

Arisu is elegant, observant, and deeply proud of her intelligence. She places exceptional importance on the title of “genius,” acknowledging only selected people as worthy equals. Consequently, she reacts sharply when she believes Hoshino has underestimated her or divided his attention during their contest 8 9.

Competition appeals to her most when it is personal. She prefers direct intellectual duels to routine class struggles, keeps a running score of exchanges with Hoshino, and remains determined to defeat Ayanokoji even after accepting that he may have been naturally gifted rather than merely manufactured by the White Room 19 33 120.

Her composed public manner conceals loneliness and emotional vulnerability. She resents Hoshino’s failure to seek her out, questions whether her feelings are love or admiration for his genius, and becomes distressed when her health prevents her from joining the school trip. Being treated as a child troubles her almost as much as being excluded 33 55 101 103.

She is possessive toward Hoshino, but not committed to an exclusively two-person future. She explicitly accepts other women who genuinely love him and imagines a lively shared household. Her objection is to someone claiming only friendship while seeking a lover’s emotional closeness without acknowledging responsibility 106.

Despite her refusal to lose, she can honor an agreed penalty. After losing a wager to Karuizawa Kei, she accepts a day without Hoshino’s company rather than disputing the result 114.

Abilities & Skills

Chess

  • Regards chess as her strongest option for earning points through club challenges; she does not claim the same confidence in other games 5.
  • Regularly plays against herself in her room 34.
  • Uses chess as a preferred means of directly challenging Hoshino 33.
  • Limitation: Prolonged play can exhaust her physically even when she remains mentally determined to continue 33.

Observation and Deduction

  • Notices Hoshino scouting Class A before their formal introduction 5.
  • Reads changes in his behavior and correctly infers that he intends to intervene in a special exam 104.
  • Identifies his island strategy—using advance information and physical ability to seize bases—and correctly names him as Class D’s Leader 109.
  • Understands his methods well enough to suspect when he has arranged for Ayanokoji to keep watch during a private meeting 59.

Psychological Manipulation

  • Uses misleading remarks and apparent romantic claims to draw reactions from Hoshino and nearby students 6 8 11.
  • Pressures Hoshino with the possibility of damaging rumors if he withdraws from their arrangement 8.
  • Exploits Shiina Hiyori’s uncertainty about Hoshino to persuade her to join an investigation 88.
  • Arranges seating during the VIP Exam to place Hoshino directly opposite an uncomfortable Ichinose Honami 123.
  • Limitation: Her pride and desire for Hoshino’s attention can make her own intentions easier to read 18 95.

Leadership and Information Networks

  • Has Kamuro follow Hoshino and report his movements 33 55.

  • Limitation: Katsuragi Kohei’s competing leadership and Class A’s internal divisions restrict her influence over class strategy 105 120.

Knowledge of School Rules

  • Supplies Hoshino with information about student evaluations, evidence-based assessments, and appeals to the Student Council 48.
  • Returns to the island after withdrawing under a special arrangement that prohibits contact with her own class and permits only one additional swimsuit 109.
  • Takes down nine groups during the VIP Exam, securing a victory in her wager with Hoshino 124.

Health and Physical Limitations

  • Congenital heart disease: Her condition is disclosed during her first meeting with Hoshino and discussed in greater detail at the café 5 9.
  • Limited walking endurance: Heat and sustained walking visibly weaken her during the island exam, despite assistance from her cane and Kamuro 108.
  • Physical exhaustion: A drawn-out chess match leaves her unable to continue moving pieces comfortably, though she resists stopping 33.
  • Protective restrictions: Her father initially refuses permission for the special-exam trip. He eventually allows her to decide, subject to being brought back immediately if an emergency occurs 102 103.
  • Independence: She rejects the assumption that needing assistance makes her incapable of caring for herself or choosing which risks to accept 40 102.

Equipment / Items

  • Cane — Her principal mobility aid, kept close at hand when seated. Losing its support can cause her to fall forward 32 78 123.
  • Personal chessboard — Usually remains set up in her room for games against herself 34.
  • Custom-made chess set — Commissioned for her match with Hoshino, carried by Kamuro, and later given to Hoshino as a keepsake of their first “date” 34 40.
  • Phone — Used to coordinate with Kamuro and transfer Private Points, including the one-million-point payment for Hoshino’s outside call 105 130.

Relationships

  • Hoshino En — Intellectual rival and romantic partner. Their alliance begins as a points-and-information exchange, develops through wagers and teasing, and becomes openly affectionate. She regards him as the person best suited to her, while he supports her efforts to gain independence from her father 5 8 95 102 126.
  • Sakayanagi Narimori — Father and school chairman. His concern for her health conflicts with her desire to participate in school life. She challenges his restrictions and later uses their family relationship to help Hoshino obtain permission for an outside call 102 103 130.
  • Kamuro Masumi — Subordinate, attendant, and confidante. Arisu holds leverage over her and frequently assigns carrying, surveillance, and assistance duties. Kamuro nevertheless comforts her when she cries and gives blunt advice about her relationship with Hoshino 33 43 55 95.
  • Ayanokoji Kiyotaka — Longstanding target of her competitive ambitions. His White Room achievements inspired her interest in chess. She also distrusts the trouble his circumstances could bring Hoshino and resents their closeness 18 19 43.
  • Ichinose Honami — Class rival and perceived romantic competitor. Arisu repeatedly challenges her closeness to Hoshino, though the two also investigate Shiranami Chihiro’s activities together 34 52 57 123.
  • Shiina Hiyori — Initially treated as a rival for Hoshino’s attention. Their relationship becomes more cooperative through discussions about their feelings, family life, and Arisu’s wish to be included rather than protected through distance 88 106 111 114 126.
  • Karuizawa Kei — Romantic rival turned collaborator. Arisu accepts Kei’s “Paradise Project,” agrees to help her “awaken” Hoshino, and begins addressing her by her first name 110.
  • Katsuragi Kohei — Rival leader within her class. Their ideological conflict divides Class A; she criticizes his information gathering and leadership after the island exam 105 119 120.
  • Hashimoto Masayoshi and Kito Hayato — Classmates who follow her instructions 14.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Meeting and Café Exchanges

Arisu approaches Hoshino outside the Chess Club after he has drained its available points. He offers her 20% of the rewards from further club challenges in exchange for confirming his deductions about the school. Their cooperation quickly becomes an intellectual contest, with Arisu publicly adopting a girlfriend role and declaring her intention to defeat him 5 6 8.

At the café, Hoshino exposes her surveillance, explains his deductions about her heart condition, and identifies her family connection to the school administration. She insists that her Class A placement was earned fairly 9 11.

Ayanokoji and the Class-Point Wager

During lunch, Arisu reveals the origin of her interest in Ayanokoji. Hoshino challenges her belief that White Room training alone produced his genius. She accepts the possibility of innate talent but retains her desire to defeat both boys 18 19.

She then wagers on the Class Points of all four first-year classes. The winner is determined by the smaller average difference between predictions and actual results, with one condition owed by the loser. Hoshino ultimately wins 19 44.

Personal Duels and Growing Attachment

Arisu confronts Hoshino over his lack of attention and brings a custom chess set for a direct match. He deliberately prolongs play until she becomes exhausted, then stops the game despite her objections. She later gives him the set as a gift 33 40.

Her rivalry increasingly overlaps with romantic attachment. She publicly claims him, interferes with Ichinose’s approaches, and privately struggles to distinguish love from admiration for his intelligence 43 52 55.

Special-Exam Trip and Island Withdrawal

After initially signing a refusal to participate, Arisu breaks down over being excluded from the trip. Hoshino takes her to confront her father, and together they argue that medical support—not his constant presence—should determine whether she can participate. Her father grants conditional permission 101 102 103.

On the island, prolonged walking takes its toll. Arisu withdraws but obtains permission to return ashore without contacting her class. She stays with Hoshino’s group, identifies his strategy, and forms an alliance with Kei 108 109 110.

Her original Class A falls below Ichinose’s class and becomes Class B after the exam 119 121.

VIP Exam and Later Wagers

Arisu participates in the Dragon Group, using her closeness to Hoshino to pressure Ichinose before discussions begin. She takes down nine groups and wins her wager with him 123 124.

Her relationship with Hoshino grows closer after the exam. Nevertheless, competition continues: over the following three days, Hoshino wins every match against Arisu, Kei, and their respective allies 126 127.

Return to School

On July 19, after the first semester ends, Arisu meets Hoshino in her father’s office. She pays one million Private Points for his call to his twin sister, Ai, and eagerly asks to join the conversation 130.
