Background

Warring States Period

Madara enters the story as a young Uchiha elite fighting alongside his brother Izuna. He and Izuna rescue the surviving Uchiha from a Senju ambush, with Madara’s Fire Style, shurikenjutsu, and Three-Tomoe Sharingan quickly eliminating the remaining attackers. Though volatile and harsh toward weak clansmen, he is protective of his kin. 1

When Uchiha Tajima is fatally wounded in battle, Madara saves him but suffers severe wounds and poisoning. Tajima’s death and Madara’s grief trigger the Mangekyō Sharingan; the surviving clan then accepts Madara as its new patriarch and follows his vow to avenge Tajima. 18 19

Years of war make Madara increasingly radical. His Mangekyō grants genjutsu capable of instantly breaking a jōnin’s mind and the insight to identify flaws in most ninjutsu, allowing him to dominate Senju forces and repeatedly clash with Hashirama Senju. 20

Izuna’s death at Tobirama’s hands devastates Madara. He retreats with Izuna’s remains, awakens the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and studies the Sage of Six Paths’ stone tablet, where he learns of the Eye of the Moon Plan. 34 35

Konoha and Departure

Madara eventually confronts the ruin and exhaustion of the Uchiha Clan after prolonged war. Although he retains enough power for another destructive campaign, he questions what would remain of the clan after total victory. 44

Following the formation of Konoha, Madara becomes increasingly isolated from the village’s leadership and distrustful of its treatment of the Uchiha. He sees the clan’s peripheral settlement and Tobirama’s expanding Anbu as signs that the Uchiha are being watched and excluded from real authority. 48

Madara later announces that he is leaving Konoha and invites the Uchiha to follow him. The clan refuses out of fear, war-weariness, and a desire for stability, leaving Madara disappointed and alone. 70

Hidden Operations

Although a funeral is held after his reported death, Madara survives and later meets Uchiha Sou while weakened by Hashirama Cells rejecting his body. Sou reduces the rejection through Netherworld Manifestation, restoring Madara from forty to sixty percent of his power; continued fusion later raises this to roughly eighty percent. 94 121 124 136

Madara acquires the Rinnegan and summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. While the eyes grant him an elevated understanding of chakra and natural laws, maintaining them steadily consumes his life force. 165 168

He develops the Eye of the Moon Plan through proxies and manipulation, planning for Nagato to receive the Rinnegan only after sufficient suffering and physical growth. He later entrusts Obito with advancing the plan while warning him not to trust Sou too deeply. 248 329

Appearance

Madara is a tall, imposing Uchiha with long black hair, sharp features, and an overwhelming battlefield presence. His appearance changes substantially across his long life and repeated resurrections. 1 273 629

  • Often wears layered red battle armor. 273 629
  • Has scarlet Sharingan in his youth, later evolving to Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and Rinnegan. 1 35 165
  • In old age, his face is deeply lined, but his posture remains straight and his presence remains immense. 273
  • His Impure World Reincarnation body bears visible cracks across the face and ash-gray skin. 629 661
  • After revival, his body is heavily scarred from past battles and Hashirama Cell experimentation. 707 710
  • As the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, he manifests a violet-black Six Paths chakra cloak and a third eye. 714 733

Personality

Madara is proud, demanding, and contemptuous of weakness. As a young commander, he scolds a surviving clansman for hiding during battle, yet personally saves him and protects the Uchiha from annihilation. 1

Loss repeatedly hardens him. Tajima’s death drives him to vengeance, while Izuna’s death deepens his grief, paranoia, and belief that only overwhelming power can secure the Uchiha’s future. 19 35

He is also highly strategic and patient. Madara cultivates successors, manipulates political instability, waits for Nagato to become a viable Rinnegan vessel, and treats allies as assets whose usefulness must be evaluated. 248 318 329

Despite his ruthlessness, Madara seeks an end to war. His chosen solution is absolute control: a peaceful world enforced through the Infinite Tsukuyomi rather than one built on trust or free will. 733

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Madara’s ocular power is the foundation of his combat ability, granting extraordinary perception, prediction, and genjutsu.

  • His Three-Tomoe Sharingan allows him to track battlefield movement and fight with elite Fire Style and shurikenjutsu. 1
  • His Mangekyō Sharingan can collapse a jōnin’s mind through genjutsu and identify chakra-flow weaknesses in most ninjutsu. 20
  • Its insight can predict Tobirama’s Body Flicker landing points and exert suppressive pressure on Tobirama’s movement. 25
  • His Eternal Mangekyō removes the immediate instability surrounding his earlier Mangekyō power and becomes the basis for his later transformations. 35

Susanoo

Madara can manifest Susanoo at multiple levels, from skeletal armor to massive perfected forms.

  • Uses Tengu-form Susanoo alongside his Gunbai and Kama against Hashirama’s Wood Style. 34
  • Can manifest Perfect Susanoo and combine it with Hashirama’s Wood Style through Majestic Attire: Susanoo. 62
  • As an Impure World Reincarnation, progresses Susanoo from skeletal form to muscular armored form with a massive chakra sword. 635
  • Creates Wood Clones that can each activate Susanoo, overwhelming the Five Kage. 636

Rinnegan and Outer Path Techniques

The Rinnegan gives Madara control over high-level ocular and Outer Path techniques.

  • Subjugates the Nine-Tails with a glance and controls it through Susanoo. 88
  • Summons and connects with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. 168 712
  • Produces multiple gravitational cores resembling Chibaku Tensei formations. 728
  • Regains both Rinnegan after taking back the eye implanted in Obito. 727
  • Maintaining the Rinnegan drains his life force, even after his body is supported by Hashirama Cells and Gelel Stone energy. 168

Limbo

Madara creates invisible Limbo shadows that fight beside him from another plane.

  • Can manifest four Limbo shadows alongside himself. 726
  • Sasuke’s Rinnegan can perceive their outlines, while their attacks can damage Susanoo. 726
  • The shadows can be partially sealed and weakened, forcing Madara to retreat and seek further power. 726

Hashirama Cells and Wood Style

Madara integrates Hashirama Cells to augment his chakra, vitality, and combat options.

  • Initially suffers severe rejection that reduces him to forty percent of his strength. 124
  • Regains sixty percent of his power after Sou interferes with the rejection, then later reaches roughly eighty percent as fusion stabilizes. 124 136
  • Can create Wood Clones and use advanced Wood Style, including Adamantine Wood Golem Technique. 636 685

Six Paths Power

After absorbing the Demonic Statue and becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, Madara obtains the Sage of Six Paths’ power.

  • Wields Truth-Seeking Orbs capable of destructive and disintegrating effects. 723
  • Gains a Six Paths chakra cloak that withstands most attacks. 733
  • Continues adapting to Six Paths power during battle, growing stronger even against Naruto and Sasuke. 726
  • Successfully casts the Infinite Tsukuyomi before Black Zetsu betrays him. 733

Taijutsu and Battlefield Combat

Madara is an exceptionally powerful close-range fighter even without ocular abilities.

  • His taijutsu is broad, forceful, and shaped by decades as a battlefield commander. 273
  • Catches the Raikage’s full-power lightning-enhanced punch with one hand and throws him aside. 635
  • Fights Hashirama after revival while eyeless, relying on raw physical strength and combat instinct. 707
  • Endures Might Guy’s Eight Gates techniques and acknowledges Guy as the strongest taijutsu opponent he has faced. 721

Equipment

  • Layered red armor — Madara’s customary battlefield armor, worn in life and recreated with his Impure World Reincarnation body. 273 707
  • Gunbai and Kama — Used in his clash with Hashirama during the Warring States period. 34
  • Six Paths staff — Used against Naruto and Sasuke after becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki. 726

  • Uchiha Tajima — Father and former Uchiha patriarch. Madara saves Tajima from Senju attackers but cannot prevent his death. 17 18

  • Uchiha Tsang — Younger Uchiha whom Madara rescues during a Senju ambush and later judges as a potentially useful clansman. 1 2 11
  • Uchiha Sou — Later ally and mutually cautious collaborator. Sou helps stabilize Madara’s Hashirama Cell rejection, and the two coordinate covert plans while each remains wary of the other’s ambitions. 121 124 248 273
