Background / History

Hanzo rose as Amegakure’s foremost combatant and leader, having learned the ninja world’s power politics through his early life as a mercenary employed by major nations. He sought to strengthen the Land of Rain through territorial expansion, believing that war could create an opening for a small nation trapped between stronger powers. 107 146

Before the conflict with Konoha and Sunagakure escalated, Hanzo judged the border fortifications of the Lands of Fire and Wind to be an existential strategic threat: they would compress any future front line into the Land of Rain. He therefore launched Amegakure’s first wave of attacks. 107

Hanzo initially relied on his personal strength, Salamander Ibuse’s poison, and Amegakure’s wartime mobilization to confront the great nations. During the operation against Konoha’s Decapitation Squad, he fought Hatake Sakumo and forced the unit into a difficult defensive battle, but Sakumo’s swordsmanship and Yamada Soji’s interference prevented him from securing victory. 112 115

As Amegakure’s simultaneous war against the Lands of Fire and Wind stalled, Hanzo convened his ten trusted subordinates in an underground command facility.
