Background / History

Academy years and graduation

Zabuza began as a feared Kirigakure Academy student known for defeating opponents quickly. He faced Araki in an academy match, adapting from a strength contest to rapid kunai strikes, but was ultimately defeated when Araki's My Style: Five-Star Rending left him unable to identify the real attack. Rather than simply accepting the loss, Zabuza asked for the technique's name. 1

Despite his intimidating reputation, Zabuza humbly asked Araki to teach him water walking. Araki linked chakra control to swordsmanship, and Zabuza began practicing swordsmanship under his guidance. 5

During the academy's jungle graduation exam, Zabuza participated in Karatachi Yagura's plan to expose Kirigakure's brutal system. He killed 140 fellow students, later stating that he had done so “to test [his] capacity”; when questioned by Araki, he admitted that Yagura had taught him that answer. 9 14 The massacre earned him the title of the Mist Demon, though Zabuza identified himself simply as “Zabuza Momochi” and a taijutsu specialist. 20 21

Early ninja career

To protect him from political backlash after the graduation incident, Zabuza was assigned to Kisame Hoshigaki's squad alongside Araki. 21 Yagura encouraged him to supplement his close-range fighting with swordsmanship and predicted that he could someday wield one of Kirigakure's Seven Ninja Swords. 24

Under Kisame's training and through competition with Araki, Zabuza developed an assassination style based on the Water Clone Technique, Hidden Mist Technique, swordsmanship, and silent movement. He eventually mastered creating nine indistinguishable Water Clones and could spread mist over several dozen meters. 26

Zabuza later chose the A-rank Water Release: Great Waterfall Technique for large-scale offense and the B-rank Silent Killing Technique to develop his hearing and stealth further. 48

Ghostly Aura awakening

Zabuza's progress stalled as nightmares and the weight of the people he had killed haunted him. Araki arranged a high-risk match to push him past this bottleneck. 184

During his battle with Hua Bing, Zabuza entered his inner world and confronted the vengeful spirits of his dead classmates. He chose to accept their resentment and carry their suffering, allowing the spirits to merge with him and awaken the Ghostly Aura. The resulting purple-black and crimson aura protected him from Hua Bing's ice attacks and projected overwhelming killing intent onto nearby observers. 187

After recovering from the battle, Zabuza was assigned to familiarize himself with the Ghostly Aura and develop practical combat applications for it. He also accepted responsibility for carrying the burdens of his future teammates. 196

Personality

Zabuza is competitive, proud, and intensely driven to improve. After being treated as the weakest member of his squad, he entered a sparring match determined not to remain the “bottom” of the team, immediately deploying Hidden Mist and pushing himself to use the newly learned Great Waterfall Technique. 52

He prefers calculated assassination over broad, destructive combat. Zabuza specifically rejected the idea of wielding a massive weapon to cut through crowds, explaining that he would rather strike as an elusive killer. 38 This pragmatism also appears in later battles: after Kizaru overwhelmed him and Kaguya Black Bone, Zabuza proposed retreating and considering a later ambush rather than continuing a losing fight. 556

Although he does not regret the academy massacre, he no longer treats it as a source of pride. He regards it as the event that taught him the cost of carrying other people's fates. 196 His awakening reflects this change: rather than denying the resentment of his victims, he consciously accepts it as part of himself. 187
