Background / History

Chen Yuan was an overworked young man who died after collapsing from overtime work and falling to his death. He then transmigrated into the EVA Reincarnation World, where the Little Genius Smartwatch assigned him the identity of Dr. Chen’s son, a NERV member, and Unit-01’s sole Compatible Candidate. 190

His inherited world memories place him in a complicated position within NERV: Yi Sanjiu knows him as Dr. Chen’s son, while the organization had apparently known in advance that he would appear alone in the desert. Chen quickly suspects that the relationship between Dr. Chen and “Chen Yuan” is not an ordinary father-son relationship. 191

Inside the Demon-Locking Tower, Chen finds the Reincarnation Diary, a record left by a past version of himself. The diary recounts that earlier Chen Yuan’s romance and marriage with Yi Sanjiu, the birth of their son, her death in a Reincarnator attack, and his subsequent rise as humanity’s savior in pursuit of a way to revive her. 218 220
