Background / History

God descended upon the world roughly four thousand years before Dove's time. The First Generation of God's Chosen was born after this descent, while the captain—later revealed to be the Second Generation—awakened as a God's Chosen during the same ancient era. 457 458

Rather than behaving as a fixed deity, God has been described as a developing natural law that takes human form. Its power shapes the world's civilization, while civilization in turn changes the rules established by God. 457

The Church built much of its authority around studying and exploiting God. It learned to work around parts of God's Prohibition, treated God's Chosen as controllable assets, and used divine phenomena to pursue scientific and technological research. Li Heng later characterized the world's God as a “mindless idiot” whose wish-like power had been turned into an experimental tool by ordinary people. 450 455 469

As God's changes accelerated, Commander feared that its awakening would become a catastrophe beyond the Church's ability to contain. He believed the world was effectively a laboratory whose continued existence depended on preventing that awakening. 477 478

God eventually removed a monster's seal, risking the replacement of people with avatars. Li Heng then devoured the Idiot God and obtained its memories before beginning his journey toward Infinity. 489

Nature

God's true essence is unknown. The captain compares it to a natural law rather than an ordinary organism, while stressing that it changes over time and cannot be fully defined. 457
