Background
Dugu Bo and his granddaughter Dugu Yan inherited the defect of the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Martial Soul: its toxins accumulated inside their bodies and would eventually become fatal. He concealed both the flaw and the cause of Dugu Yan’s father’s death from her to spare her fear. After Dugu Yan brought Lu Yu’s warning to him, Dugu Bo concluded that their Martial Souls lacked a “Poison Sac” to store their toxins safely 62.
Before joining Martial Soul Hall, he remained in Heaven Dou City because Prince Xue Xing had once saved him. Dugu Bo repaid that favor by protecting Xue Xing for years, even though he disliked imperial politics and refused to commit himself to the royal succession struggle 67 199.
Personality
Dugu Bo is blunt, irritable, and easily provoked when others question his integrity. He was enraged when Snake Lance Douluo implied that he might harm Lu Yu for the cure to his Martial Soul flaw, citing his years of loyalty to Prince Xue Xing as proof that he would not betray an agreement 67.
His loyalty is matched by his protectiveness toward Dugu Yan. He investigated Lu Yu’s offer alone rather than expose her to a potential trap, forced her to prioritize her Martial Soul evolution over remaining at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, and later accompanied her into Death Valley rather than let her pursue a possible god inheritance by herself 62 77 211.
Although initially skeptical of Lu Yu, he honors his word. He allowed Lu Yu to freely harvest the valuable herbs from his garden and did not retract that permission even after realizing their worth. Over time, he came to trust Lu Yu as both a benefactor and family 64 69 82.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Martial Soul
Dugu Bo’s original Martial Soul is the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor, a high-grade beast Martial Soul whose toxin accumulation caused his inherited defect. Its evolution greatly improved his potential and granted him wings during Martial Soul Possession 72 103 105.
- Manifests nine Soul Rings: two yellow, two purple, and five black 74.
- Gains aerial mobility through the wings produced by his evolved Martial Soul 105.
- His enhanced potential gave him a path toward the peak Douluo realm 72 103.
Poison Arts
As the Poison Douluo, Dugu Bo specializes in lethal toxins and poison-based Spirit Skills. He could suppress Emperor Xue Ye’s unusual poison but could not immediately cure it, demonstrating both his expertise and the limits of his knowledge against unfamiliar toxins 199.
- Ninth Soul Skill — Jade Phosphorous Divine Light — Fires a corrosive green beam capable of melting a Martial Soul Avatar and severely wounding a Blue-White Demon Civet 74.
- Ninth Soul Skill — Poison Dragon Divine Light — Saturates a large area with poisonous radiance; Soul Masters below the Titled Douluo realm die without being able to raise an alarm 203.
- His poison can threaten enemies far stronger than himself, making him dangerous even among Titled Douluo 25.
Poison Pill
Lu Yu taught Dugu Bo the Pill Condensation Method, allowing him to gather the toxins accumulated in his body into a Poison Pill. Dugu Bo began producing a poison granule after only one night of practice and expected to complete the process in slightly more than two months 64 67.
- Stores the toxins responsible for the Jade Phosphorous Serpent lineage defect.
- Can be expelled and detonated as a final weapon; Dugu Bo states that it would leave no grass alive within a ten-mile radius 108.
- Detonating it leaves him unable to use Spirit Skills until he condenses a new pill and places him in a severely weakened state 64.
Time Stasis
Dugu Bo’s eighth Soul Skill freezes time in a limited area. It is weaker than the Blue-White Demon Civet’s time ability, but it can briefly restrain a target long enough for him to launch a decisive attack 74.
Possessions
- Herb Garden at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — A garden containing immortal herbs and spiritual plants, including the Aromatic Silk Beauty, Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass, and Infernal Delicate Apricot 67 68.
- Dragon Origin Pill — Received from Lu Yu after his body was repaired; its medicinal effects contributed to his Martial Soul evolution and later advancement 80 103.
- 60,000-year Soul Bone — Discovered within the corpse of a Blazing Mad Lion; Dugu Bo regarded it as a means to compensate for his lack of direct combat power 74.
Relationships
- Dugu Yan — His granddaughter. Dugu Bo’s central priority is curing, protecting, and improving her future; he accompanies her into dangerous training grounds rather than let her face them alone 62 77 211.
- Lu Yu — Benefactor, ally, and protector target. Lu Yu cured Dugu Bo’s Martial Soul defect, arranged his evolution, and earned his unwavering loyalty; they call each other “Old Monster” and “Little Monster” 64 70 108.
- Prince Xue Xing — Former benefactor and long-time associate. Dugu Bo protected him for years in repayment, but declared the debt settled after treating Emperor Xue Ye and joining Martial Soul Hall 67 199.
- Bibi Dong — Pope of Martial Soul Hall. Dugu Bo joined her organization after Lu Yu won him over, and he treats her with due respect because he recognizes her superior strength 88.
- Snake Lance Douluo — Former opponent and later fellow Martial Soul Hall member. Snake Lance initially distrusted Dugu Bo’s intentions toward Lu Yu, but later revealed Martial Soul Hall’s role in the Heaven Dou imperial poisoning scheme to him 67 200.
- Tang Hao — Adversary. Dugu Bo confronted Tang Hao to defend Lu Yu and threatened to use his Poison Pill against Tang Hao’s son and the Clear Sky Sect 108.
Story Role
- Jade Phosphorous Serpent Cure — Learns of his family’s inherited defect through Dugu Yan and seeks out Lu Yu. He accepts Lu Yu’s terms in exchange for the Pill Condensation Method and access to a cure 62 64.
- Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well — Brings Lu Yu to his herb garden, where Lu Yu harvests immortal herbs and refines pills that repair Dugu Bo’s body and enable his Martial Soul evolution 67 70 71.
- Martial Soul Hall Recruitment — Becomes Lu Yu’s protector and subsequently joins Martial Soul Hall, accomplishing what the organization had previously failed to do through direct recruitment 64 87 88.

- Heaven Dou Imperial Crisis — Returns to Heaven Dou City to suppress Emperor Xue Ye’s poison, refuses to take sides in the royal succession dispute, and ultimately chooses Lu Yu over Prince Xue Xing when forced to decide 199 202.
- Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect Assault — Uses Poison Dragon Divine Light to silently devastate the sect’s defenders during Martial Soul Hall’s attack 203.
- Death Valley Expedition — Accompanies Dugu Yan into Death Valley after she pursues a possible god inheritance, later disappearing with her in the region 211 260.
