Nature and Laws
- All spirituality returns to the Spirit Realm, while mysterious knowledge originates from it. Occult practitioners have known it by several names despite referring to the same place. 87
- Its time and space are unstable; conventional maps cannot function there. Travel depends on a key—an object, memory, note, or other thing with a mystical connection to the destination. 236
- A Spirit Realm region may serve as a stable navigational reference point, or lighthouse. Aaron uses the region corresponding to Yanan Town for this purpose because of its status and stability. 237
- The realm is saturated with dangerous information. Forbidden knowledge can corrupt, degenerate, or drive explorers into madness, while Spirit Realm creatures pose direct physical and spiritual threats. 88 258
- Even records describing the realm can be contaminating: Dreamseeker Solon’s Notes must be continually deciphered, and insufficiently powerful readers can be contaminated by studying them. 237
- Spiritual objects can be carried into the Spirit Realm, unlike ordinary possessions. 237
Access and Traversal
Spirit-Body Entry
Low-level Beyonders normally enter by projecting their souls through a ritual and the Spirit Language incantation known as the Key of Dreams. The incantation’s translated meaning is: “The dream is opened by the heart.” 88 90
- An entrant’s Spirit Realm arrival point is not reliably linked to their location in reality.
- Returning, however, brings the spirit body back to the location of its physical body. 104
- This lack of one-to-one correspondence creates a serious risk of becoming lost without positioning techniques. 104
Physical Entry
Entering in the flesh offers greater resistance to contaminating information, but is normally inaccessible to low-ranking Beyonders. 236 238
- Weak intersections between the Mortal World and Spirit Realm can permit even low-level Extraordinary individuals to cross physically, though doing so is exceptionally dangerous. 219
- Pure Shadow pathway Beyonders can enter physically at low levels; their transformed spirit forms also improve resistance to corrosion. 238
- This method can cause travelers to lose their real-world coordinates and eventually become Spirit Realm creatures. 278
- After opening the Fourth Primordial, Beyonders may choose to bring their physical bodies into the Spirit Realm. Higher-stage advancement rituals are likewise required to take place there. 318 460
- Shadowless Ones are exceptional: as beings akin to half-Spirit Realm creatures, they can sense real-world coordinates and use Spirit Realm Teleportation without becoming lost. 278
Known Regions and Landmarks
| Region / Landmark | Description |
|---|---|
| Yanan Town region | A high-status, stable region used by Aaron as a navigational lighthouse. Its associated image includes an ancient town beneath a violet moon containing a flesh-and-blood embryo. 237 |
| Great Marsh | A Spirit Realm meeting and exploration area visited by Aaron and Lilliat. 258 344 |
| Black Forest | A forest of twisted, palm-like branches inhabited by translucent, tadpole-like creatures that swim through the air. 90 |
| Sea of pure white flowers | A hidden and dangerous area inhabited by malformed lizard and snake monsters; Ye Funai explores it while seeking a site for a Spirit Realm wonder. 360 |
| White Towers | Towers established by the Sun Church that maintain a far-reaching surveillance network across the Spirit Realm. 426 |

History
A thousand years before the modern era, gifted individuals began entering the realm through dreams around the founding of the Fabri Dynasty. This contact coincided with the emergence of mystery, spirituality, and ether in the Mortal World. 87
During the war of the Fate Controllers, the then-called Dream Realm was nearly destroyed. Aaron later states that it was grafted onto reality and became the source of mystery in the real world, although its inhabitants apparently perished in the catastrophe. 90
The Mortal World and Spirit Realm subsequently became spiritually entangled, described as “twin stars”: close and connected through stable passages, but still distinct worlds. Spirit Realm creatures can descend into the Mortal World only at a price and are suppressed there by an inviolable law. 504
Dawnbreak later defeated several of the Twelve Age Controllers, seized part of their authority, imprisoned others, and exiled hidden existences, becoming the strongest known power in the Spirit Realm. The Sun Church subsequently imposed extensive control through the White Tower surveillance system. 426 433
When the Fate Controllers of Secrecy, Tower, Underworld, and Cocoon awakened, the Spirit Realm and Mortal World underwent further drastic changes. Spirituality began draining from the world, impairing rituals, mystical items, and Extraordinary individuals. 878
Inhabitants and Dangers
- Spirit Realm creatures — Entities native to the realm, ranging from relatively weak drifting creatures to mythical beings of immense strength. 238 504
- Spirit Realm priests — Black-robed priests encountered near the black pyramids; they wielded stone weapons and nearly killed Eagle Falcon. 239
- Sun Clerics — Sun Church agents stationed around the White Towers. They identify unregistered visitors as illegal Dream Realm intruders and subject evil spirits to judgment. 426
- Lost spirits — Countless wandering dead are found near the highest point of the Spirit Realm and within the River of Death. 455 480
- Contaminating information — Ambient knowledge, phenomena, and even spatial locations can corrupt spirit bodies or overwhelm an explorer’s mind. 88 236 258
- Forbidden teleportation zones — Areas dangerous even to Shadowless Ones, despite their superior ability to navigate the realm. 360
Influence on the Mortal World
- The Spirit Realm acts as the source of mysterious knowledge and the destination of all spirituality. 87
- Temporary intersections between the two worlds can shift solid reality into an illusory state and release mysteries, symbols, and supernatural knowledge. 397
- Conflicts within the Spirit Realm can directly spread into the Mortal World, such as the River of Death’s assault on the White Towers causing corpses to rise in Plymouth. 455
- As the two worlds draw closer, stable passages allow increasingly powerful Spirit Realm creatures to descend into reality. 504
- The realm’s spiritual state affects mortal spirituality; its later drainage crisis weakens rituals, magical items, and Extraordinary beings across the world. 878
Associated Entities
- Dawnbreak — The dominant known Age Controller of the Spirit Realm, having defeated, devoured, imprisoned, or exiled rival Controllers and hidden existences. 433
- The Twelve Age Controllers — Former rulers and major powers of the Spirit Realm; their collective permission is required to pass through the true Gate of Longevity. 433 480
- Spirit of Void — Aaron’s spirit-body identity. Its status can interfere with divination, and Aaron is recognized as a Crown Bearer personally crowned by the Spirit Realm. 433 480
- Sun Church — Maintains White Tower-based surveillance throughout the realm and deploys Sun Clerics against intruders. 426
- Shadowless Order — Its Shadowless Ones are especially suited to the Spirit Realm, gaining reliable navigation and Spirit Realm Teleportation after becoming Non-Human Existences. 278
