Background / History
Sengoku rose through Marine Headquarters from a junior soldier to Fleet Admiral, gaining exceptional prestige and authority during his career. His longstanding allies included Kong, Garp, and Zephyr, whose combined influence helped centralize Marine Headquarters’ command structure. 263 361
While serving as an Admiral, Sengoku took an interest in Tsugikuni Yoriichi’s suspiciously exceptional background, weapon, and reported Conqueror’s Haki. He nevertheless recognized Yoriichi’s merits, personally promoted him to Rear Admiral at age fourteen, and later accepted Garp’s recommendation that Yoriichi and Kuzan lead the new G-ICE Branch in Water Seven. 10 114 130
After Yoriichi rejected an initial order to return to Headquarters as an Admiral, Sengoku accepted Kong’s decision to reorganize Yoriichi’s Dawn Branch into the semi-independent Sword of Dawn. The unit’s expanding authority and recruitment policies increasingly worried Sengoku, particularly when Yoriichi began acting beyond conventional Marine constraints. 208 229
Sengoku eventually succeeded Kong as Fleet Admiral, while Yoriichi was promoted to Admiral under the codename Crimson Phoenix. Sengoku retained Yoriichi in the New World rather than bringing him fully under Headquarters control, aware both of Yoriichi’s overwhelming strength and his intolerance for injustice. 251
Personality
Sengoku is calculating, disciplined, and deeply concerned with preserving world stability. He weighs political consequences, military resources, and civilian safety rather than pursuing simple victories; during major clashes, he repeatedly prioritized minimizing Marine casualties and preventing broader disorder. 123 553
His loyalty to Marine Headquarters is tempered by his growing disillusionment with the Celestial Dragons and the World Government. Though he initially opposed Yoriichi’s rebellion out of concern for the Marines’ future, he gradually recognized the value of the New Marines’ stabilizing influence and the corruption of the system he had served. 263 469 553
Sengoku is capable of accepting responsibility and changing course. The deaths of old comrades, especially Garp and Kong, ultimately pushed him to abandon his former restraint and personally join Yoriichi’s campaign against the Celestial Dragons. 687 689
Abilities & Skills
Mythical Zoan Transformation
Sengoku possesses a Mythical Zoan-type Hito Hito no Mi ability that lets him transform into a giant golden Buddha. 688 692
- His transformed body reaches tens of meters in height and can repel powerful opponents with immense palms and shockwaves. 460 688
- He can rapidly enter or leave his transformation to change his hitbox and evade attacks aimed at his larger form. 692
- In Buddha form, he can control his body precisely enough to prevent blood loss from severe wounds, though he lacks the extreme regeneration of awakened users such as Yoriichi. 692
Haki
Sengoku possesses powerful Conqueror’s Haki, which he unleashed while confronting Saint Garling in the Holy Land. 688
- His Haki and Buddha-form shockwaves were strong enough to injure Saint Garling internally. 688
- He developed methods to fight opponents using Observation Killing by relying on battle experience, intuition, and subtle changes in airflow rather than Observation Haki alone. 692
- He was still vulnerable to coordinated attacks by Shanks and Saint Garling, who severed his Achilles tendon and forced him out of the frontline battle. 692 696
Marine Six Styles and Life Return
Sengoku has mastered Moonwalk and Life Return. 692
- He uses Moonwalk for rapid aerial movement during combat. 692
- His Life Return control lets him force damaged muscles to close wounds, though it cannot quickly repair catastrophic tendon damage. 692
Relationships
- Tsugikuni Yoriichi — Initially a highly valued but increasingly uncontrollable subordinate. Sengoku promoted him, opposed several of his defiant actions, and later became his ally against the Celestial Dragons. 114 263 687
- Monkey D. Garp — Longtime comrade whose forceful recommendations repeatedly shaped Sengoku’s personnel decisions. Garp’s death was a major factor in Sengoku’s decision to act against the World Government. 130 687
- Zephyr — Old comrade and fellow Marine leader. Sengoku respected Zephyr’s connection to Yoriichi and later planned the Holy Land operation alongside both mentor and disciple. 10 687
- Kong — Former Fleet Admiral and political ally. Kong supported the Sword of Dawn’s creation and negotiated Yoriichi’s promotion to Admiral. 208 251
- Borsalino — Trusted subordinate whose transfer to Yoriichi’s branch weakened Sengoku’s available forces. Sengoku later relied on Borsalino’s influence within Headquarters during the changing balance of power. 212 678
- Sakazuki — A powerful Admiral who follows Sengoku’s orders despite disagreeing with his choice to aid Yoriichi. Sengoku sought to preserve Sakazuki as a defender of Marine Headquarters rather than draw him into open rebellion. 683 687
- Rosinante — Sengoku’s adopted son and a personal vulnerability considered by Yoriichi when assessing whether Sengoku could be trusted against the Celestial Dragons. 687
Story Role / Major Arcs
Yoriichi’s Rise in the Marines
Sengoku recognized Yoriichi’s extraordinary value early, promoted him to Rear Admiral, and placed him in leadership positions despite his youth. He also helped formalize the Sword of Dawn after Yoriichi refused to return to Headquarters as an Admiral. 114 208
Fleet Admiral and Conflict with Yoriichi
As Fleet Admiral, Sengoku attempted to contain Yoriichi’s growing independence while preserving Marine order. He confronted Yoriichi over the Celestial Dragons’ authority and later led the force tasked with intercepting the renegade Admiral. 251 263
The New Marines and Political Accommodation
Sengoku gradually adopted a permissive approach toward the New Marines because they stabilized the New World and deterred the Celestial Dragons from acting recklessly. He resisted the Gorosei’s attempts to force an immediate confrontation with Yoriichi, despite continuing to publicly serve as Fleet Admiral. 426 469
Starting Island and the Succession Crisis
Following the Gorosei’s defeat on Starting Island, Sengoku refused Yoriichi’s initial demand to sever Marine Headquarters from the Celestial Dragons. When faced with the New Marines’ superior military strength and the need to preserve Headquarters, he agreed to convene a leadership meeting and publicly advanced Yoriichi’s authority. 553 554
Assault on the Holy Land
Sengoku personally joined Yoriichi and Zephyr’s operation against the Celestial Dragons, accepting that he could no longer remain neutral. He fought Saint Garling and Shanks to buy time for Yoriichi, sustaining severe injuries before Yoriichi ordered him away from the battlefield. 687 690 692 696
Post–Holy Land Reforms
After Yoriichi destroyed Mary Geoise and eliminated the Celestial Dragons, Sengoku remained Fleet Admiral to manage the political fallout and assist the transition. He publicly confirmed the Holy Land operation, supported Yoriichi’s return to Marine Headquarters, and appointed him Chief of Staff and successor to the Fleet Admiral position. 705 707 708
