Sun Lin was Sun Quan's grandnephew, the grandson of Sun Qiang, Sun Jian's eldest brother, and the son of General Who Conquers the Captives Sun Ben. At nine years old, he inherited his father's rank and acted as governor of Yuzhang, becoming the youngest commandery governor of the Three Kingdoms era.

(Note: Most online sources record that Sun Ben died in 219, but I hold a different view. Based on deduction, I believe it was 210, for three reasons.

First, Sun Lin was born in 202 and inherited his rank at nine, which puts it in 210. Second, Gu Shao entered office in the same year Sun Lin succeeded to the position and replaced him as governor of Yuzhang.
