Background / History
Renji grew up in Inuzuri, the 78th District of South Rukongai. He rejects Rukia's description of the district as “heaven or paradise,” calling it lawless and longing instead for the Seireitei. Having survived Inuzuri's violence and deprivation, he understands that children there are vulnerable to robbery, murder, and starvation. 1 4 7
He and Rukia mourn the companions they lost in Inuzuri. Their grief, and their shared hatred of the district's cruelty, become central to their desire for a better future. 7
After meeting the newly arrived Gilgamesh, Renji initially doubts the boy's claim to kingship. Nevertheless, he returns Gilgamesh's offered money and agrees to guide him without compensation. He later accepts becoming Gilgamesh's subject, though he initially insists that he will leave if Gilgamesh fails to honor his promises. 2 3 4
When five armed vagrants surround the group over a gemstone ring, Renji and Rukia prepare to delay them so Gilgamesh can escape. Gilgamesh instead defeats the attackers and refuses to let his subjects protect him. This act earns Renji's sincere acknowledgment of Gilgamesh as his king. 4 5 6
As Gilgamesh reforms Inuzuri and expands into Tobiume, Renji assists with renovation work and becomes one of the young kingdom's developing talents. He later enters Shin'o Academy alongside Gilgamesh and Rukia. 14 21 25 45
Personality
Renji is blunt, proud, and quick to challenge things he finds unreasonable. His skepticism toward Gilgamesh's royal claims and his insistence on setting terms before becoming a subject reflect this independent streak. 1 4
Despite his rough manner, Renji is compassionate and deeply loyal. He refuses to abandon Gilgamesh when escape seems possible, grieves openly for his deceased companions, and immediately commits to accompanying Gilgamesh into the dangerous District 79. 4 7 17
He is highly competitive with Rukia and often bickers with her, especially when either challenges the other's ability. His pride is easily wounded by comparison with her stronger Kidō aptitude, but Gilgamesh's encouragement renews his resolve to make his own name known throughout Soul Society. 6 30 31
Renji's loyalty to Gilgamesh is intense. Even when faced with Byakuya Kuchiki's overwhelming spiritual pressure, he places himself between Byakuya and Gilgamesh; being unable to protect his king leaves him with an unprecedented desire to grow stronger. 66
