Background / History

After learning of the Royal Guard, the Soul King, and the history of Soul Society following Kirio Hikifune's promotion, Aizen came to resent fate and the Soul King's position. He resolved to transcend the limits of a Shinigami, replace the Soul King, and become the world's sole true god. To this end, he collected souls and used a Soul King fragment taken from Rangiku Matsumoto to create a semi-finished Hōgyoku. 56

Aizen secretly conducted Hollowfication experiments and was responsible for the Hollowfication of Shinji Hirako and his group, forcing Yoruichi Shihōin, Kisuke Urahara, and Shinji to flee to the Human World. 37 44 He later continued experiments in Naruki City with Gin Ichimaru while searching for Shinji's group. 44

Publicly, Aizen cultivated the image of a humble, gentle, and capable captain. His deception was so complete that Kaien Shiba and Isshin Shiba initially found Yoruichi's accusation against him impossible to believe. 37

Battle in the Garganta and Hueco Mundo

Aizen pursues Gilgamesh into the Garganta, where Black Coffin fails to damage either Gilgamesh or the Vimana. After surviving the resulting nuclear explosion through a subspace escape, he re-engages Gilgamesh in Hueco Mundo, only to be wounded by Gungnir and unable to catch the Vimana. 47 53 54 56
