Background / History

Rukia and her older sister, Hisana, were sent to South Rukongai's 78th District, Inuzuri, when Rukia was an infant. Unable to survive while carrying her in Inuzuri's conditions, Hisana abandoned Rukia; afterward, she spent years searching for and regretting the loss of her sister. 63

Rukia survived in Inuzuri and became accustomed to its violence, deprivation, and constant deaths. Her high Reiryoku also meant she could not sustain herself on ambient Reishi alone, making hunger a serious danger. 6 7 By the time Gilgamesh arrived in the district, she was living alongside Renji Abarai and immediately recognized him as a newcomer unfamiliar with Soul Society. 1

She initially comforted Gilgamesh by telling him that death could be a new beginning. Though her early goodwill was influenced by Gilgamesh's inherent charisma, she and Renji eventually accepted him sincerely as their king and became his first subjects. 1 2 4 5
