Background / History

Sengoku and Garp were comrades and rivals long before the main events. After the God Valley Incident, they fought over their opposing beliefs: Garp accused Sengoku of pursuing rank, while Sengoku argued that only authority could change the system. They later fought together to defeat Shiki when he stormed Marine Headquarters. 142 168

As an Admiral, Sengoku secretly acted as Rosinante's foster father. He approached Conrad for information on Law and the Op-Op Fruit, which the World Government valued at five billion Beli. Conrad instead condemned Sengoku's use of the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Buddha and demanded that Sengoku become his disciple. 16 17

Unable to protect Rosinante from punishment for stealing the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Sengoku allowed him to go to Impel Down. Rosinante's fate and Sengoku's own perceived failures became central obstacles to his cultivation. 18 47

Sengoku eventually accepted Conrad as his master in Buddha's Palm cultivation, although he continued to struggle with the technique's demand for detachment, compassion, and clarity of purpose. 48 145

Sengoku is a calculating strategist whose belief that rank is necessary for reform drives nearly every major decision he makes. Upon becoming Fleet Admiral, he seeks to restructure Marine authority, eliminate the Pirate Emperors, and eventually secure a Marine voice among the world's highest rulers. 142 143

His conviction is undermined by a persistent conscience. The contradiction between World Government orders, civilian suffering, his affection for Conrad, and the compassion demanded by Buddha's Palm leaves him increasingly unstable.
