Background / History

Mito Uzumaki introduced Tsunade and her younger brother Nawaki to Uchiha Gen after declaring that she had adopted Gen as her grandson. Tsunade was surprised by her grandmother’s decision but remained more curious than hostile toward him. 17

At Mito’s urging, Tsunade began evaluating Gen as a prospective student. She challenged him to a spar near the Naka River, effortlessly countering his Sharingan-assisted Thunder Breathing sword attacks with overwhelming physical strength and a Chakra Scalpel. 19 After witnessing the dangers of Gen’s Golden Light Chakra Mode, she healed his injuries and recognized that its chakra-burning principle could inform her own research. 20

She subsequently became Gen’s medical-ninjutsu instructor. Tsunade suspended his other training until he reached a passing medical standard, teaching him Healing Jutsu through increasingly demanding “save the fish” exercises while also continuing his Strength of a Hundred training. 22 24

As war began, Tsunade placed Gen in the Medical Department, both because of his ability and because she feared the battlefield’s violence would change him. She still allowed him to fight when necessary, treating the Medical Department as a battlefield in its own right. 32 33

Despite her carefree behavior, she is intensely protective of those she considers her own. Her concern for Nawaki drives her to seek protection for him before war, while her concern for Gen leads her to keep him close to the Medical Department and repeatedly intervene when others threaten or insult him. 27 32 34

She is also resolute in crises. Tsunade refuses to abandon Konoha’s wounded, confronts Hiruzen Sarutobi when he attempts to limit Gen’s involvement, and ultimately supports Gen’s vision for changing the village despite the personal cost. 35 65 88
