Background / History

Obito operated behind a one-eyed mask while claiming to be Uchiha Madara. Under that identity, he released the Nine-Tails during the Night of the Nine-Tails, causing the deaths of the Fourth Hokage and Kushina and inflicting major civilian losses on Konoha. His involvement was later exposed through the matching DNA of his severed arm and Kakashi’s Sharingan. 2 66 67

He concealed his identity from both enemies and allies, continuing to call himself Madara even after the major villages had identified him as Obito. He presented the gathering of all Tailed Beasts as a way to create peace by using overwhelming power to suppress every nation. 131 163

Despite his stated goal of a peaceful world, Obito’s personal motive remained tied to Rin: he intended to revive her only after creating a world where she would no longer suffer. 138 228

Appearance

Obito commonly appears in Akatsuki attire and masks his identity, changing masks as his ocular power develops.

  • Wears a black cloak patterned with red clouds. 131
  • Initially uses a one-eyed mask while posing as Madara. 65
  • Later wears a white mask with circular markings that exposes both eyes. 163 166
  • His unmasked face is visibly uneven: one half appears normal, while the other resembles White Zetsu. 209
  • Bears facial scarring. 220

Personality

Obito is secretive, manipulative, and intensely controlling. He coerces allies through fear, deception, genjutsu, and threats against people they value; his recruitment and control of Deidara, Kabuto, and Haku reflect this approach. 131 138 218

He is highly strategic but repeatedly allows anger and vengeance toward Kimura Takuya to override his judgment. His confidence rises sharply after awakening the Rinnegan, yet his tendency to underestimate Takuya leads to repeated defeats. 163 203 219

His commitment to his plans is genuine enough that he suppresses the urge to immediately revive Rin and Kakashi after awakening the Rinnegan, believing resurrection would be meaningless until he had remade the world. 138

Abilities & Skills

Kamui

Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan grants access to the Kamui Dimension and allows him to phase parts of his body into that space, rendering conventional attacks ineffective.

  • Can transport himself and others between the real world and the Kamui Dimension. 138 207
  • Uses the dimension as a prison for captives such as Deidara and Fū. 138 161
  • Can evade attacks through intangibility, though it has a five-minute maximum duration before he must materialize. 166
  • His intangibility is compromised when another Kamui user enters the same alternate space simultaneously. 138
  • Takuya’s spatially destructive attacks can damage Kamui by cutting space itself. 66

Rinnegan and Space Control

After taking Kakashi’s Sharingan, Obito awakens a Rinnegan and gains a spatial ability unique to him: Space Control. 138 206

  • Teleports instantly to any location within the ability’s effective range. 206
  • Can lock down space, preventing other Space-Time Ninjutsu users from escaping or teleporting within its range. 206
  • Reinforces space to prevent attacks such as One Step into the World from tearing it apart. 206
  • Creates spatial rifts, including Rinnegan Rift, to attack targets directly. 218
  • Uses Rinnegan techniques such as Shinra Tensei to repel attackers. 167 168

Wood Release

Obito’s White Zetsu-enhanced body gives him exceptionally strong Wood Release.

  • Can create wooden dragons and large-scale forests with little apparent effort. 221
  • Uses Wood Release: Cutting Technique to drain an opponent’s chakra and expand into a forest. 219
  • Wood Release can counter chakra-based armor by absorbing its energy. 220 221
  • His Wood Release talent greatly exceeds Yamato’s due to the White Zetsu half fused with his body. 221

Susanoo and Izanagi

With his evolved ocular power, Obito can manifest a Complete Body Susanoo and use Izanagi to negate fatal outcomes.

  • His Complete Body Susanoo is a massive winged energy giant capable of wielding a colossal Wood Release spear. 221
  • Kimura Takuya destroys the Susanoo with sustained Daylight Fist attacks in under ten seconds. 223
  • Izanagi restores Obito after fatal damage but permanently consumes the Sharingan used to activate it. 223
  • He compensates for Izanagi’s cost by having Kabuto implant numerous Sharingan into one arm. 223 224

Genjutsu and Ocular Manipulation

Obito uses Sharingan genjutsu to control or break opponents.

  • Repeatedly incapacitates Deidara with genjutsu until Deidara agrees to remain with Akatsuki. 138
  • Uses his ocular power and intimidation to pressure Kabuto into cooperating with him. 131
  • Controls the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path more effectively than Nagato and establishes six new Paths of Pain equipped with his ocular power. 202

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Uchiha Gunbai — an Uchiha heirloom said to be made from a God Tree branch; reflects ninjutsu and is used to turn Kakuzu’s elemental attacks back on him. 137
  • Akatsuki cloak — black robe patterned with red clouds. 131
  • Masks — one-eyed mask used while claiming to be Madara; later replaced with a white, circular-patterned mask exposing both eyes. 65 163 166
  • Sharingan-covered arm — surgically implanted by Kabuto to provide multiple uses of Izanagi. 223

Relationships

  • Kakashi Hatake — Former teammate and the holder of Obito’s original Sharingan. Obito takes Kakashi’s eye after luring him into the Kamui Dimension, but still hesitates over the memories they shared. 67 138
  • Kimura Takuya — Primary nemesis. Takuya exposes Obito’s identity, repeatedly breaches or damages Kamui, and ultimately devours Obito’s soul. 67 94 266
  • Uchiha Madara — Obito impersonates Madara and was cultivated by him as part of a larger plan. Madara later treats Obito as a pawn, has Black Zetsu force Obito to revive him, and takes his eyes. 65 228
  • Black Zetsu — Secretly betrays Obito by taking control of his body and forcing him to use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique on Madara. 228
  • Yakushi Kabuto — Collaborator in Akatsuki’s later operations. Kabuto assists with eye implants, controls Obito after his first death, and later fully resurrects him. 131 223 250 262
  • Rin — The person Obito intends to revive after he creates what he considers a peaceful world. His final thoughts before his first death center on losing that chance. 138 228
  • Deidara — Captured through Kamui and coerced through repeated Sharingan genjutsu into remaining with Akatsuki. 137 138
  • — Defeated with the Rinnegan and imprisoned in the Kamui Dimension during Obito’s attempt to seize the Seven-Tails. 161
  • Haku — Coerced into attacking Kimura Takuya through threats against Zabuza. 218

Story Role / Major Arcs

Night of the Nine-Tails

Operating under the Madara persona, Obito unleashes the Nine-Tails on Konoha. The attack kills the Fourth Hokage and Kushina, devastates the village, and becomes the foundational crime behind Kimura Takuya’s hatred of him. 2 67

Pain’s Defeat and Exposure

Obito arrives to collect Deva Path Pain’s body, openly claims to be Madara, and dismisses the Konoha forces. Takuya provokes him into attacking, then injures him with a space-shattering strike that severs his arm. 65 66

Takuya uses the arm as evidence to reveal that the masked man is Obito. The revelation causes Kakashi’s Mangekyō Sharingan to fully awaken. 67

Akatsuki Reorganization

After Akatsuki suffers multiple defections, Obito recruits Kabuto and claims responsibility for the organization’s leadership. He subdues Deidara with Kamui and genjutsu, defeats Kakuzu with the Uchiha Gunbai, and reasserts control through intimidation. 131 137 138

Rinnegan Campaign

Obito steals Kakashi’s Sharingan and awakens the Rinnegan. Empowered by the new eye, he defeats Fū, battles the Five Kage, takes command of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, and develops Space Control as a counter to Takuya’s spatial attacks. 138 161 168 202 206

Battle in the Kamui Dimension

Obito attempts to use Haku and Rinnegan Rift to capture Kimura Takuya. He relies on Space Control, Wood Release, Susanoo, and an arm of Sharingan-powered Izanagi, but Takuya repeatedly survives and destroys his Complete Body Susanoo. 218 219 221 223 224

First Death and Final End

When Madara is summoned through Impure World Reincarnation, Obito tries to steer him into fighting Kimura Takuya. Black Zetsu instead seizes Obito’s body and forces him to use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, reviving Madara at the cost of Obito’s life. 227 228

Kabuto later retains and controls Obito’s remains before fully resurrecting him with restored Kamui Mangekyō Sharingan. Kimura Takuya finally kills Obito permanently by invading, shredding, and devouring his soul. 250 262 266
