Power Progression
The Otsutsuki hierarchy is based on absorbing chakra, awakening inherited bloodline abilities, and developing temporal power. Their advancement is described as an automatic genetic inheritance rather than learned ninjutsu 309.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lower-ranking Otsutsuki | 309 325 | Newly created members may be transformed through White Karma. They cultivate God Trees, guard planets, and accumulate chakra through fruits and pills. |
| Time Freeze user / protected class | 309 300 | Lower-ranking members who evolve a temporal trait sufficient for Time Freeze enter a protected class. Not all Otsutsuki reach this threshold. |
| High-ranking Otsutsuki | 309 | Achieved by continually condensing temporal power into a Time Crystal Core. High-ranking members receive offerings from lower-ranking clansmen instead of personally tending God Trees. |
| Upper-echelon Otsutsuki | 298 331 | Rule individual star sectors and can suppress or strip abilities belonging to lower-ranking Otsutsuki. Kaguya reached this level after consuming the Super Human Pill. |
| God of Otsutsuki | 335 | The clan’s ultimate goal. Tenshiki attained this state by consuming ninety-nine high-ranking Otsutsuki, becoming a superposition across countless timelines and points in time. |
Background / History
Origins and expansion
The Otsutsuki are a cosmic race that expands by invading life-bearing planets, planting God Trees, and harvesting the resulting chakra. A God Tree drains a planet’s life force and natural energy to produce chakra fruit; planets that cannot be conquered are still considered viable cultivation grounds after their civilizations are destroyed 289 299.
Their reproduction does not ordinarily rely on sexual reproduction. Through White Karma, an Otsutsuki can assimilate another being into their race; Kaguya herself was originally a member of a people whose planet had been destroyed before she was transformed into an Otsutsuki 306 311.
The clan’s hierarchy is rigid. Lower-ranking members cultivate worlds and transport resources, while powerful members receive chakra fruits and human pills as tribute in pursuit of becoming the God of Otsutsuki 309.
The Ninja World and Kaguya
Kaguya arrived in the Ninja World as Isshiki’s subordinate and intended living sacrifice for a Ten-Tails. Instead, she ambushed Isshiki, consumed the God Tree Fruit herself, and later hid from the Otsutsuki after losing Earth’s spatial coordinates 83 292.
Her actions prevented the immediate harvesting of the Ninja World, but the broader clan remained a looming threat. Momoshiki and Kinshiki spent thousands of years attempting to relocate Earth after Kaguya’s sealing removed their usable coordinate from the planet 292.
Moon Otsutsuki Clan
Hamura Otsutsuki’s descendants settled on the moon to guard Kaguya’s seal and protect the Ninja World. They used a massive Synthetic Tenseigan—formed from the Byakugan of the lunar clan’s main family—to monitor Earth, control puppets, manipulate the moon, redirect meteors, absorb chakra, and launch energy attacks 273 279.
The lunar clan later divided between a main family that supported peace and a branch family that concluded the Ninja World should be destroyed. Kimura Takuya believed Black Zetsu instigated the conflict to eliminate the moon’s pure-blooded Otsutsuki and prevent them from threatening Kaguya’s revival 274 275.
Toneri survived as the final lunar Otsutsuki. After joining Three-Day City, he secured resurrection rights for his people; more than three thousand lunar clansmen were revived and relocated to Three-Day City 279 284.
War with Three-Day City
After Momoshiki, Kinshiki, Urashiki, and Isshiki were defeated, Three-Day City learned the Otsutsuki were not a small group but an interstellar civilization occupying vast territories. Their threat prompted Three-Day City to retreat into the Kamui Dimension, develop independent power systems, and prepare for a future counterattack 299 300.
Following the creation of Divine Dragon warriors and advanced spatial technology, Three-Day City began capturing Otsutsuki across its star sector. Roughly two hundred thousand lower-ranking Otsutsuki were brought to the Three-Day City starship and executed, their combined remains compressed into a Super Human Pill 329 330.
Kimura Takuya subsequently killed eight high-ranking Otsutsuki in a single day. The surviving higher-ups sacrificed themselves to Tenshiki, allowing him to become the God of Otsutsuki 335.
Civilization and Organization
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Territory | The clan occupied every life-bearing planet in the Milky Way’s fourth spiral arm, estimated at roughly twenty-five million planets 298 |
| Star sectors | Their territory was divided into one hundred star sectors, each ruled by a higher-ranking Otsutsuki 298 329 |
| Lower-ranking workforce | Each sector contained at least one hundred thousand pairs of Otsutsuki responsible for cultivating God Trees on inhabited planets 298 |
| Couriers | Each sector had ten courier pairs, such as Momoshiki and Kinshiki, tasked with transporting chakra fruit and harvested chakra to higher ranks 298 |
| Higher-ups | There were 108 known Otsutsuki higher-ups before Kimura Takuya’s campaign began 335 |
| Primary resource | Chakra fruit, human pills, and chakra extracted through God Tree cultivation 289 309 |
Appearance
Otsutsuki appearance varies with bloodline development and rank. Lower-ranking members may retain pale skin, horns, Byakugan, or forehead Rinnegan traits, while upper-echelon Otsutsuki can appear almost indistinguishable from ordinary humans 331.
- Otsutsuki commonly possess powerful dōjutsu, including Byakugan, Rinnegan, Tenseigan-derived eyes, or more advanced ocular abilities.
- Kaguya’s upper-rank transformation removed her horns, forehead Rinnegan, and pale complexion while greatly increasing her power 331.
- The hundred high-ranking Otsutsuki gathered by Tenshiki were described as men and women with differing appearances who nonetheless resembled ordinary East Asian humans 335.
Abilities & Traits
Bloodline Evolution
The Otsutsuki inherit their potential genetically. They become stronger by absorbing sufficient energy rather than by developing conventional ninja techniques.
- Chakra fruits and human pills awaken dormant bloodline abilities and elevate an Otsutsuki’s lifeform 309.
- The highest goal is the God of Otsutsuki, a state pursued through immense accumulated chakra and temporal evolution 309 335.
- Otsutsuki souls are exceptionally resilient; Kaguya remained recoverable after her body had been destroyed and her soul sealed for thousands of years 320.
Karma Assimilation
Karma allows the Otsutsuki to reproduce, preserve themselves, and expand their population.
- White Karma transforms a target into an Otsutsuki without necessarily replacing their original soul 306.
- Black Karma stores a user’s life and soul information; after the user dies, it can overwrite a vessel and revive them 306.
- A native given White Karma and enough chakra-fruit energy can become a newborn Otsutsuki if their body survives the transformation 325.
Space-Time Ninjutsu
Otsutsuki travel between worlds through spatial techniques and depend on usable spatial coordinates.
- A main-family Otsutsuki’s chakra or physical presence can function as a coordinate for interstellar teleportation 292.
- The loss of Kaguya and Isshiki as Earth’s coordinates prevented Momoshiki and Kinshiki from returning directly to the Ninja World for thousands of years 292.
- Ordinary Otsutsuki can generally access fixed dimensions, while specialists such as Ryushiki can reach any dimension detected by their spatial tools 316.
Temporal Power
Temporal traits distinguish powerful Otsutsuki from ordinary clansmen.
- Time Freeze can immobilize opponents who lack a sufficiently powerful time-related ability or artifact 296 300.
- Only Otsutsuki with a Six-Tomoe Rinnegan or higher were stated to retain consciousness during a Time Freeze 296.
- Upper-echelon Otsutsuki can suppress lower-ranking Otsutsuki abilities; after her ascension, Kaguya could freely strip Kamui Rinnegan abilities from Three-Day City’s residents 331.
God Tree Cultivation
God Trees are the basis of the clan’s economy and interstellar expansion.
- A Ten-Tails serves as the seedling form of a God Tree and requires immense energy, often including a living sacrifice, to mature 306.
- Mature God Trees produce chakra fruit by consuming planetary life force and natural energy 289.
- A single God Tree requires at least one thousand years of cultivation before it can bear fruit 330.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- God Tree / Ten-Tails — Planetary cultivation organism used to absorb life force and produce chakra fruit 289 306.
- Chakra Fruits — Condensed harvests from God Trees used to strengthen Otsutsuki bloodlines 160 289.
- Human Pills — Compressed Otsutsuki bodies and chakra consumed to rapidly gain accumulated power 293 329.
- Karma — Marking system used for assimilation, reproduction, and resurrection 306.
- Time artifacts — Rare treasures capable of manipulating time; the Otsutsuki lost one such artifact thousands of years before Kimura Takuya recovered it 296.
- Flying fortresses — Interstellar vessels used by Otsutsuki such as Isshiki to transport a Ten-Tails and approach cultivation worlds 305 306.
Relationships
- Kaguya Otsutsuki — Former Otsutsuki servant assigned to Isshiki; she betrayed the clan’s mission on Earth by consuming the God Tree Fruit herself 83 292.
- Isshiki Otsutsuki — Kaguya’s superior and intended recipient of her sacrifice to the Ten-Tails; killed after Kimura Takuya intervened in the past timeline 306 307.
- Otsutsuki Toneri — Final survivor and later clan head of the Moon Otsutsuki Clan; led the revived lunar clan into Three-Day City 279 284.
- Black Zetsu — Kaguya’s child whose chakra possessed a purer Otsutsuki bloodline than Toneri’s; manipulated Toneri by impersonating his father and controlling the Otsutsuki Treasure 277.
- Divine Dragon Clan — One of the Milky Way’s four major cosmic races and a race capable of standing against the Otsutsuki 317.
- Three-Day City — Initially threatened by the Otsutsuki, then became the clan’s principal enemy and launched the campaign that devastated its territories 300 329 338.
- Tenshiki — Higher-up who consumed ninety-nine fellow high-ranking Otsutsuki and became the God of Otsutsuki 335.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Lunar Otsutsuki Arc
Toneri notices Three-Day City’s search for a lunar passage and resolves to destroy the Ninja World in accordance with his interpretation of Hamura’s will 273. Black Zetsu exploits Toneri’s isolation by posing as his father, but Kimura Takuya eventually takes control of the Otsutsuki Treasure and forces a negotiation 275 277 279.
Kaguya Revival Arc
Kimura Takuya revives Kaguya to access Otsutsuki knowledge and technology. Her revival exposes the full scale of the interstellar Otsutsuki hierarchy, their God Tree operations, and their eventual interest in Earth 286 288 289.
Main Family Conflict
Momoshiki and Kinshiki arrive after locating Earth again, followed by Urashiki, Ryushiki, and Isshiki. Their defeats provide Three-Day City with information on Time Freeze, Karma, temporal evolution, spatial coordinates, and the Otsutsuki’s planetary empire 292 293 299 309.
Otsutsuki Purge
Three-Day City counterattacks after fifteen years of preparation, deploying Divine Dragon warriors to seize lower-ranking Otsutsuki throughout their star sector. The mass execution of nearly two hundred thousand captives begins a larger campaign against the clan’s star systems 329 330 335.
Decline
After Tenshiki’s rise and the final conflict, Three-Day City spends thousands of years conquering Otsutsuki-held territories. Surviving Otsutsuki become so scarce that eliminating them is eventually considered an elementary-school-level mission in Three-Day City 338.
