Background / History

The Uchiha were one of Konoha's founding-era great clans and regarded the Senju as their only true historic rivals. After the deaths of the First and Second Hokage, many clan members believed the Hokage position should eventually pass to an Uchiha rather than remain with Hiruzen Sarutobi. Their wartime plan was to place either the clan head or young clan head in contention for the Fourth Hokage position, rather than openly overthrow the Third. 4 6

The clan's relationship with the village was already strained. Many Konoha shinobi saw the Uchiha as arrogant, emotionally unstable, and insulated by their control of the Police Force, while the clan regarded the Police Force as a comparatively safe haven from frontline casualties. 3 6 51

During the Second Shinobi World War, Ishiya Uchiha directed Kawadera Uchiha to infiltrate Seigetsu Senju's squad and collect intelligence on the Senju Clan. The clan also used coded steel-wire signals for covert communication. 6

No Uchiha secured command of Konoha's Land of Waves front, leading 1,200 shinobi, including 200 Uchiha. The clan leveraged its military role to seek designated Land of Waves missions and initially negotiated for half of all local mission revenue, alarming Konoha's leadership. 51 52 68

Kirigakure's harvesting and transplantation of Sharingan transformed the war into a personal clan crisis. The disappearance of twelve Uchiha—including two Three-Tomoe users—prompted No Uchiha to prioritize recovering missing clansmen and retaliating against the Mist ninja. 68

The campaign devastated the clan. Of 237 Uchiha deployed before and during the battle, 196 died; No Uchiha and eighteen Three-Tomoe users were among the dead. Only five Three-Tomoe users, including Fugaku, remained alive immediately afterward. 83

Following No's death, Fugaku was elected clan head and Yuan Uchiha became clan elder. Their new leadership faced internal factionalism, reduced influence at Konoha's command level, and pressure from Orochimaru and the village leadership. 84 86 89

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the clan's defining ocular bloodline and its foremost symbol of status. Its progression from one to three tomoe is central to Uchiha prestige; Three-Tomoe users are regarded as the clan's elite and commonly possess jonin-level potential. 49 52

The Uchiha used the war to pursue greater political status, cultivate intelligence inside other clans, and position themselves for future control of the Hokage office. Their ambition was tempered by pragmatic figures such as Ishiya, who recognized that challenging Hiruzen directly would be suicidal. 6

Land of Waves Command

No Uchiha became commander-in-chief of the Land of Waves front, giving the clan unprecedented influence over 1,200 Konoha shinobi. The Uchiha sought to turn military success into long-term mission revenue and political standing. 51 68

Sharingan Harvesting Crisis

Kirigakure began targeting Uchiha squads and transplanting stolen Sharingan into its own ninja. Ye Uchiha's mutilated corpse confirmed the threat, and the clan launched a counteroffensive to reclaim its eyes, protect surviving Three-Tomoe users, and retake the Land of Waves capital. 61 63

Collapse of No Uchiha's Faction

Despite battlefield victories, the Land of Waves campaign cost the clan No Uchiha, most of its deployed force, and nearly half of its Three-Tomoe users. The survivors returned demoralized and divided between Fugaku's leadership and Yuan's elder faction. 83 84

Blood Eye Revenge

Fugaku formed the Blood Eye Assassination Force after Kawadera identified thirteen surviving Mist ninja who had received Sharingan transplants. The force operated in two-person infiltration teams, with at least one Three-Tomoe user in each pair. 97
