Background / History

Sakumo grew up alongside Senju Diejian and Yamanaka Ina. During their childhood mock battles, he consistently held an advantage in weapon arts and chakra sensing, allowing him to pursue Diejian even when Diejian hid in the forest. 3

When Kakuzu attacked, Sakumo prioritized getting Diejian and Ina to safety and later returned to fight beside them. He used Shadow Clones, close-quarters combat, and a Lightning Release-infused kunai to create an opening for Ina's Mind Body Switch Technique and Diejian's decisive attack. Kakuzu nevertheless gravely injured him before Hashirama arrived. 3 5 6

Diejian's apparent death and Hashirama's sacrifice deeply affected Sakumo. Determined never to lose another comrade, he began training recklessly until Sasuke Sarutobi intervened. 7 He later graduated as a Genin and joined Team 6, led by Kagami Uchiha. 9

During the Chunin Selection final, Sakumo unveiled the speed that earned him the name Konoha White Fang. By channeling Lightning Release through his chakra blade, he enhanced his physical ability to a level spectators compared to a white flash; his pure speed was considered comparable to Kagami's. 22

Personality

Sakumo is calm, practical, and notably protective of his comrades. Even as a child, he was often the exasperated voice of reason during Diejian and Ina's antics, though he continued accompanying them. 2

He approaches battle analytically. Against Kakuzu, he concealed intelligence from the enemy, used a Shadow Clone as a decoy, recognized the need for Diejian's power, and formulated the team’s plan around buying time for Diejian's recovery. 5

His greatest motivation is protecting those close to him. After witnessing Diejian's apparent death, Sakumo pursued strength obsessively; later, he refused to let Juri repeat Diejian's reckless attempt to fight an overwhelming enemy alone. 7 34
