Background / History

Konoha was founded jointly by the Senju and Uchiha clans. Following the Senju clan's decline, the Uchiha became its foremost great clan, though the village's strength also came to rely heavily on clanless shinobi and smaller clans 234 350 573.

As the leading village among the Five Great Ninja Villages, Konoha sustained major losses during the Third Shinobi World War and the Nine-Tails Incident. Its shortage of personnel led it to tacitly permit exceptionally young shinobi such as Arata Uchiha to undertake a continuous stream of missions 43.

After the Nine-Tails Incident, Konoha's leadership restructured clan power and pushed the Uchiha toward the village's margins. The clan became politically isolated, while Hiruzen Sarutobi, Shimura Danzō, and the Council debated whether the Uchiha should be contained, used, or eliminated 50 58.

Uchiha crisis

Following the Uchiha massacre, foreign villages demanded that Konoha surrender Arata Uchiha. Some Councilors favored compliance, while Hayama Shirakumo, Kakashi Hatake, and the Yamanaka clan head opposed it 88. Konoha publicly declared that it would not hand over any clan or individual under threat, even as internal factions continued to treat Arata and the surviving Uchiha as liabilities 151 176.

Arata's leadership rebuilt the Uchiha into a cohesive force. Their alliance with the Kurama clan, the renovation of their compound, and the emergence of multiple Three-Tomoe Sharingan users heightened the leadership's fear that the clan could challenge control of the village 244 257 350 369.

Conflict with Arata Uchiha

Konoha repeatedly monitored the Uchiha compound through Anbu and Root surveillance, strengthened its barriers around sensitive sites, and considered political or military action against the clan 272 369 371. Its conflict with Arata escalated from diplomatic disputes and accusations to open confrontation after the village blamed the Uchiha for Orochimaru's escape 496.

During the attack on Konoha, Sunagakure, Otogakure, the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, and Arata's allies assaulted the village while Konoha's Anbu moved against the Uchiha clan 536 540. Arata ultimately fought Hiruzen Sarutobi and declared that Konoha had driven the Uchiha to destruction through its treatment of the clan 541 568.

After the conflict, Hiruzen admitted his failures regarding the Uchiha and asked Arata to become the Fifth Hokage. Arata initially rejected Konoha as a homeland and intended to leave with his clan 573. In a later negotiation, Arata is identified as Konoha's First Hokage, while Tsunade is later identified as its Fifth Hokage 581 736.

Destruction by Akatsuki

Akatsuki, led by Pain, later destroyed Konoha while seeking the Nine-Tails. Tsunade was critically wounded, and Naruto Uzumaki and Jiraiya returned to find the village in ruins 748.

Layout and Defenses

• Konoha possessed gates, residential districts, clan compounds, the Hokage Building, Hokage Rock, training grounds, a Ninja Academy, a hospital, and a high-security prison 2 272 394 550.
• Its barrier network covered the village from within and without, with especially dense protection around Anbu facilities, the Hokage Building, research sites, and the Uchiha compound 272.
• During the invasion, Konoha's evacuation plan prioritized the hospital and Ninja Academy over underground shelters after Hokage Rock was destroyed and the shelters were deemed potentially unsafe 550.
• The Four Violet Flames Formation was used during the final battle; it prevented both escape from within and entry from outside 541.
