Background / History
Shukaku is the One-Tail, an ancient Tailed Beast whose body and foundation are composed of condensed Soul Power rather than ordinary flesh. He possesses control over sandstorms and was involved in sealing the Demon Beast Moryo beneath an Undersea Desert in the southern waters of the Mingdou Mountain Range. The Pyramid Seal remains tied to his condition: as its curse-mark patterns fade, it signals that Shukaku has been defeated. 102 156
He resides around the Undersea Desert and reacts violently when Zhongli Wu, Sasori, Deidara, and the Holy Spirit Cult intrude. His opening sandstorm kills two rank-91 Title Douluo before the attackers can even locate him. 121
Deidara provokes Shukaku into leaving Qingming and the Pyramid Seal behind by mocking him as less courageous than a “fox.” Shukaku immediately loses his temper and pursues Deidara across the desert, allowing Sasori to confront Qingming separately. 123
During the ensuing battle, Shukaku demonstrates that he is more than a straightforward brawler. He uses sandstorms to conceal his movements, alters the terrain to trap Deidara, and silently leaps into the air to ambush Sasori from above. However, Deidara's C3 destroys one of Shukaku's arms, while C4 Karura and C0 Self-Destruction inflict catastrophic damage on his sand body. 138 148 152 155
Despite the destruction of his physical form, Shukaku's underlying Soul Power remains intact and allows him to regenerate from surrounding sand. Following the battle, Shi Luo holds him in a palm-sized form and considers refining him into his own power, but abandons the attempt after learning that Dai Hao is actively searching for Shukaku. 148 149 177
When Dai Hao and Xuan Zi finally find him at sea, Shukaku initially mistakes them for Dawn Organization agents and attacks. Matatabi temporarily possesses Dai Hao to negotiate with him, convincing Shukaku that the Tailed Beasts and humanity share an interest in preventing the Ten-Tails' revival. Shukaku reluctantly agrees to cooperate and grants part of his Soul Power to Xuan Zi. 178 179
Appearance
Shukaku normally manifests as an enormous tanuki-like beast approximately one hundred meters tall, formed from densely condensed yellow sand and covered in black curse-mark patterns. 121
- A single thick tail composed of yellow sand. 121
- Large, sharp eyes and a shrill, grating voice. 121 149
- A body that can be burned, dismembered, and rebuilt by drawing in surrounding sand. 141 148 149
- Can appear in a compact palm-sized tanuki form while restrained by Shi Luo. 177
Personality
Shukaku is irritable, prideful, and openly contemptuous toward humans. He calls intruders weak, mocks Xuan Zi's strength, and initially interprets human contact as an attempt to capture or seal him. 121 178 179
He is especially sensitive to references to the Nine-Tails, whom he calls a “stinking fox.” Deidara exploits this rivalry to lure him away from the Pyramid Seal, demonstrating that Shukaku's anger can override his caution. 123 179
Beneath his arrogance, Shukaku is perceptive and pragmatic. He recognizes the danger posed by the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and the Ten-Tails, and he accepts cooperation when Matatabi establishes that the Tailed Beasts cannot survive by fighting the Dawn Organization separately. 141 178 179
Abilities & Skills
Sand Manipulation
Shukaku can command enormous quantities of sand, reshape terrain, create defensive structures, and form a physical body from his element.
- Produces sandstorms that blind opponents while leaving his own movement and perception largely unhindered. 121 152
- Tracks enemies through the sand under his control, giving him a major advantage in desert terrain. 152
- Restores damaged limbs and surface injuries by drawing sand from the surrounding desert. 148 149
- Creates massive sand claws, walls, spears, waves, and defensive dunes. 125 152 154
- Uses Quicksand Waterfall Flow to bury targets beneath a giant sand dune. 152
- Uses Sand Waterfall Imperial Funeral to compress terrain into a crushing quicksand pit. 153
- Uses Prison Sand Burial to force victims deeper underground after trapping them. 153
Wind Release: Drilling Air Bullet
Shukaku fires compressed masses of air as long-range bombardment.
- Launches multiple air cannons dozens of meters wide. 121 137
- Can use repeated Air Bullets to occupy an opponent's attention before attacking from an unexpected angle. 138
- The attacks are strong enough to force Sasori into deploying the Kazekage Puppet's Iron Sand World Method for defense. 137
Tailed Beast Soul Power and Regeneration
As a Tailed Beast, Shukaku's true foundation is his immense condensed Soul Power rather than his sand body.
- His Soul Power overwhelms even Zhongli Wu, a level 98 Super Douluo, who feels insignificant before it. 121
- Physical destruction alone does not significantly reduce his foundation; Deidara's C3 vaporizes an arm without noticeably weakening Shukaku's Soul Power. 148
- Can counter Deidara's C4 micro-bombs by using Soul Power and sand to continuously repair the parts of his body being destroyed. 155
- Tailed Beasts are described as inherently immortal and indestructible, though Shukaku can still be restrained, damaged, and reduced to a compact form. 69 155 177
- Granted Xuan Zi a portion of his Soul Power due to Xuan Zi's earth-attributed Godly Taotie Bull martial soul. This power enables Xuan Zi to briefly approach level 99 Limit Douluo strength and later display level 99 power. 179 199
Tailed Beast Bomb
Shukaku condenses black and blue energy spheres into a black-purple Tailed Beast Bomb.
- The completed sphere reaches dozens of meters in diameter and distorts the surrounding air through its pressure. 142
- Its explosion tears open the cloud layer and produces a fireball vastly larger than Deidara's C2 Clay Dragon detonation. 142
- Requires time to charge and can be redirected if Shukaku is knocked off balance before firing. Sasori's iron-sand pillar causes one such shot to miss and explode in the sky. 142 143
Relationships
- Matatabi — Fellow Tailed Beast and the main reason Shukaku accepts an alliance with humans. He initially accuses Matatabi of “falling” by cooperating with humanity, but later accepts their shared need to stop the Ten-Tails. 178 179
- Dai Hao — Human intermediary carrying Matatabi's Soul Power. Dai Hao's body is temporarily possessed by Matatabi to speak with Shukaku. 178
- Xuan Zi — Human ally who receives a portion of Shukaku's Soul Power due to his earth-attributed martial soul. Shukaku openly ridicules Xuan Zi's original strength. 179
- Qingming — A figure connected to Moryo's sealing. Shukaku is alarmed by Qingming's appearance and later angrily demands to know what happened after Qingming dissipates. 122 141
- Deidara — Principal opponent during the Undersea Desert conflict. Deidara repeatedly taunts Shukaku, exploits his rivalry with the Nine-Tails, and uses C3, C4, and C0 against him. 123 148 155
- Sasori — Opponent who uses the Kazekage Puppet and iron sand to disrupt Shukaku's Tailed Beast Bomb and defend against his attacks. Sasori also reveals Matatabi's capture, intensifying Shukaku's concern about the Dawn Organization. 137 141 142
- Shi Luo — Holds Shukaku in a palm-sized form and considers refining him to increase his own power, but ultimately postpones the act. 177
- Moryo — The Demon Beast sealed beneath the Undersea Desert; Shukaku's continuing role as its seal guardian prevents him from simply leaving his post. 102 179
- Nine-Tails — An old rival whom Shukaku calls the “stinking fox.” Mentioning the fox is enough to provoke Shukaku into abandoning his position. 123 179
Notable Quotes
“This desert is my home field. I won't lose!” 149
“It's not that I trust you humans. I just don't want that stinking fox to look down on me.” 179
Trivia
- Shukaku's strongest emotional trigger shown is being compared unfavorably to the Nine-Tails. 123
- Although he controls sand, Shukaku's seal and original habitat are located in an Undersea Desert. 102
- He is deeply afraid of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path because it is the husk and suppressive vessel of the Ten-Tails, the source of Tailed Beast power. 141
