Background and History

The empire traces its foundation to descendants of an exiled Divine Beast ancestor and the leaders of the Yanyang and Yinyue Tribes. After conquering the continent, these descendants combined their tribes’ names to create both the Sun Moon Empire and the Sun Moon Continent; the Xu and Kong families became its two royal houses 3.

The Sun Moon Cult predates the empire and originally legitimized Xu and Kong rule through the doctrine that both houses descended from the Sun and Moon Gods. With mass religious influence, persecution of dissenters, and knowledge attributed to the Purple Imperial Chaos Dragon King, the Cult helped the royal houses unify the continent 6.

Following the Blood Moon Coup, Cult elder Kong Yao and Prince Xu Ziying overthrew Emperor Xu Yunhai. Kong Yao subsequently defeated Xu Ziying in their struggle for power, and the Cult’s theocratic authority surpassed imperial authority, beginning the so-called Dark Era 7.

Economic growth, technological development, and the rise of merchants and new aristocrats eventually produced opposition to the Cult’s restrictions on thought, private property, education, and innovation. The Emperor’s Royalist Army fought the Cult Army in the decade-long War of the Gods and Emperors; the Royalists prevailed and instituted parliamentary rule, constitutional limits on the Emperor, and reforms favoring industry, commerce, and education 7.

By Xu Mochen’s tenure as Crown Prince and “Hidden Emperor,” the empire began a rapid industrial and military modernization program while opening diplomatic and commercial contact with the Douluo Continent 2 19 21.

Government and Society

The empire’s political system contains Radical, Conservative, Neutral, and other factions, particularly within its National Congress. This division limits the ease with which the state can declare war or conduct direct intervention abroad 110 174.

Economy, Industry, and Cultivation

The empire’s people are generally considered inferior to the Douluo Continent in martial soul quality, high-level soul master numbers, territory, population, and some natural resources. Its state compensates through industrial capacity, education, standardized equipment, and soul-guidance technology 2 20 187.

Military and Security

The empire does not rely on a massive permanent army because the western ocean and its superior navy protect its homeland from direct invasion. Its industrial system is viewed as capable of rapidly equipping millions of higher-quality Spirit Guidance Legion soldiers if required 26 191.

• Succession crisis and early reform — Following the previous Emperor’s death, six-year-old Crown Prince Xu Mochen assumes practical authority as the “Hidden Emperor.” He begins addressing monopolies, industrial stagnation, financial policy, military weakness, and the political influence of the Ten Great Families 1 2 10 14.

• Industrial revolution — Xu Mochen’s steam-engine program accelerates industrialization, followed by internal combustion engines, mechanized agriculture, heavy industry, electrical generation, paper currency, and artificial soul rings 9 19 20.

• Discovery of the Douluo Continent — The Yan Yang Fleet crosses the ocean to establish diplomatic relations and investigate the continent. The empire’s unified homeland, advanced fleet, and technological superiority immediately unsettle Heaven Dou representatives 21 26.

• Weapon diplomacy and concessions — The empire demonstrates its Soul Guidance Weapons to foreign powers, proposes embassies, consulates, and leased territories, and establishes concessions protected by advanced troops and constabularies 29 32 92.

• Balaque Kingdom conflict — Rather than openly join the war, the empire sells weapons to multiple factions, trains 10,000 Ming Mechanists for Balaque, stockpiles equipment in its concession, and seeks to maintain a balance of power on the Douluo Continent 73 81 124.

• Covert retaliation — When Balaque attempts to evade promised equipment orders, the Imperial Dragon Special Forces strike Night Demon City, eliminate Grand Commander Ye Sha, capture Owlman, and leave evidence intended to implicate Heaven Dou 130 134.

• Political and commercial expansion — The empire recruits the Four Single-Attribute Clans, negotiates resource development with northern tribes, spreads products and newspapers across the continent, and uses trade access, loans, concessions, and public opinion as tools of influence 110 140 145 179.
