Background / History
Obito was originally an ordinary Uchiha boy, Minato Namikaze’s disciple and Kakashi Hatake’s former classmate. His surviving records contain little beyond those connections, and Lin Qing initially finds nothing remarkable in his past 314 317.
After being left catastrophically injured, Obito survived through extensive bodily modification. Zetsu recalls finding him with burned muscle, failing organs, and almost no intact skin; even then, Obito repeatedly called for Rin. Rin’s death became the central justification for his hatred of Kirigakure and his pursuit of Infinite Tsukuyomi 214 74.
He concealed his identity behind an orange spiral mask and initially presented himself as a mysterious figure connected to Akatsuki. Only Pain, Konan, Itachi, and Zetsu knew of his existence before he publicly intervened to defend Itachi from accusations of treachery 64. Kakashi eventually connected their paired Mangekyō abilities and exposed him as Uchiha Obito to the entire Ninja World 314.
Appearance
Obito typically hides his face behind a mask and wears Akatsuki’s black-and-red cloak. After Akatsuki’s collapse, he adopts a dark-blue robe, a white mask, and a large war fan 64 286.
- Orange spiral mask during his early appearances 64.
- Left side of his face is heavily wrinkled and scarred beneath the mask 308.
- His body has been modified with Hashirama and White Zetsu cells, improving his chakra, durability, and recovery 237 287.
- As the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, his Sage body is grayish-white and surrounded by Truth-Seeking Orbs 390.
Personality
Obito is calculating, secretive, and intensely survival-oriented. He avoids direct contact with unfamiliar powers, gathers intelligence before acting, and readily abandons a confrontation once the odds turn against him 2 285. His caution becomes particularly extreme after repeated defeats by Lin Qing and Sasuke; he openly resolves not to touch anyone connected to Lin Qing until he has power sufficient to kill him 287.
His stated ideal is a world where everyone can live in Infinite Tsukuyomi, but his fixation on Rin drives him to rationalize mass suffering. He considers Kirigakure’s victims responsible for their own fate because of Rin’s death, a worldview Lin Qing condemns as petty rather than principled 74.
Despite his ruthlessness, Obito is not wholly indifferent to the people around him. After learning the deception behind Infinite Tsukuyomi, he is moved when Kabuto, Hidan, and Orochimaru attempt to save him; he stays behind so they can escape 404. Following his defeat, he admits that he never revived Rin because he had become too ashamed to face her 407.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan grants space-time ninjutsu centered on the Kamui Dimension.
- Can teleport himself and others through spatial vortices 2 3.
- Can phase his body, allowing attacks and physical objects to pass through him 73 183.
- Stores weapons, Explosive Tags, Clay Bombs, and other materials in the Kamui Dimension 75 184.
- Must materialize to escape, and his intangibility has a time limit that becomes known to his enemies 237.
- Kakashi’s corresponding Kamui becomes a critical weakness once Obito’s identity is exposed 314.
Evolved Phasing Explosion
Obito develops his phasing into a lethal counterattack.
- Can trigger explosions associated with the frequency of Lin Qing’s attacks 183.
- Uses the ability to kill the Rōran survivors and Blind City Official in a blast hot enough to crystallize desert sand 183.
- His chakra reserves and sustained combat still limit how long he can maintain intangibility 185.
Sharingan Techniques
Obito possesses a Mangekyō Sharingan and later supplements it with additional ocular powers.
- Uses Izanagi by sacrificing a transplanted Sharingan to negate a fatal injury 75.
- Controls Yagura and manipulates Tailed Beasts through a secret Sharingan-based technique 73 248.
- Acquires Nagato’s Rinnegan after taking his corpse 286.
- Seeks Ame-no-Futodama-no-Mikoto, Fugaku’s Mangekyō ability of deduction close to precognition, to secure a route to victory 368.
Tailed Beast and Ten-Tails Control
Obito’s ability to control Tailed Beasts is one of his primary strategic advantages.
- Uses Three-Tails Isobu and Yagura to attack Lin Qing in Kirigakure 73.
- Deploys six artificial Jinchūriki under his control during the Kyoto battle 248.
- Attacks Kyoto City through controlled Tailed Beasts and Tailed Beast Bombs, but retreats when Lin Qing counters him 258.
- Revives the Ten-Tails and ultimately becomes its Jinchūriki in pursuit of Infinite Tsukuyomi 344 390.
Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique
Obito can perform the Rinnegan’s resurrection technique.
- Summons Madara Uchiha at the cost of his own life energy and chakra 396.
- Later explains that he could have used the Rinnegan to revive Rin but could not bring himself to face her 407.

- Kakashi Hatake — Former teammate and holder of Obito’s other Mangekyō Sharingan; Kakashi exposes his identity and ultimately captures him 314 407.
- Itachi Uchiha — Akatsuki associate whom Obito repeatedly protects and manipulates; he offers Itachi Fugaku’s eyes and White Zetsu cells in exchange for cooperation 2 64 287.
- Zetsu — Longtime associate who helps Obito survive, hide, and pursue resources for his plans 214 221.
- Pain / Nagato — A crucial piece in Obito’s plans and later the source of the Rinnegan Obito takes after Nagato’s death 64 286.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Partner in the Jashin Great White Snake alliance, Ten-Tails revival, and Impure World Reincarnation preparations 222 313.
- White Snake Sage — Strategic ally who shares a soul-linked communication network with Obito and guides his later plans 364 390.
- Lin Qing — Principal enemy whose repeated victories force Obito into hiding and drive his escalating search for power 75 285 352.
- Sasuke Uchiha — A direct counter to Obito; Sasuke’s Mangekyō technique can erase Obito’s intangibility with a single slash 287.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Akatsuki’s masked strategist
Obito first appears alongside Itachi during the attempt on Lin Qing and Sasuke. Shocked by Lin Qing’s unexplained power, he prioritizes rescuing Itachi through Kamui rather than directly engaging 2 3.
When Akatsuki’s campaign against Lin Qing begins to fail, Obito reveals himself to prevent Pain and Itachi from turning against one another. He promises to personally retrieve the captured Konan, establishing his influence within the organization 64.
Battle for Kirigakure
Obito controls Yagura and coordinates with Pain to destroy Lin Qing in Kirigakure. He combines Tailed Beast attacks, forced control, gravity, and Kamui-based weapon barrages, but Sasuke’s Ninjutsu Nullification overturns the plan 73 75.
Star Platinum nearly kills him, forcing him to spend a transplanted Sharingan on Izanagi and flee. The defeat begins a pattern of Obito retreating whenever he cannot guarantee survival 75.
Rōran and the campaign of terror
Obito later evolves his phasing into explosive attacks and kills the Rōran survivors and Blind City Official. Lin Qing’s fury over the civilian deaths turns their conflict into a personal vendetta 183.
His rivalry with Sasori further exposes his limits: public knowledge of Kamui’s time limit and his need to materialize makes prolonged combat increasingly dangerous for him 237.
Jashin Great White Snake alliance
Harassed by Lin Qing’s repeated Spirit Photography and deprived of Akatsuki’s former strength, Obito allies with Kabuto, the White Snake Sage, and Hidan. He intends to use their senjutsu research, corpse collection, and Impure World Reincarnation plans as tools against Lin Qing 221 222.
He acquires Shukaku’s chakra, takes Nagato’s Rinnegan, and seeks chakra from all nine Tailed Beasts to revive the Ten-Tails 286 313.
Ten-Tails Jinchūriki and Infinite Tsukuyomi
Obito revives the Ten-Tails, becomes its incomplete Jinchūriki, and enters the final conflict convinced that Infinite Tsukuyomi will create a world worthy of Rin 344 364 390. He temporarily assists Momoshiki and Kinshiki against Lin Qing, supplying Tailed Beast chakra and energy attacks 371.
He is eventually extracted from the Ten-Tails and used as an unwitting component of Lin Qing’s plan as Infinite Tsukuyomi is cast 398.
Defeat, surrender, and execution
After the final conflict, Obito refuses to flee with Kabuto, Hidan, and Orochimaru, choosing instead to remain behind for a final confrontation with Kakashi 404. Stripped of the Ten-Tails and badly injured, he cannot defeat Kakashi and is captured rather than granted the death he requests 407.
Obito offers his Sharingan for research and asks that the dead someday be revived. He is later tried publicly in Kirigakure, apologizes for his crimes in a dogeza, and is executed 407 410.

Trivia
- Obito’s true identity becomes widely known only after Kakashi links their paired Kamui abilities and confirms it through published photographs 314.
- Lin Qing repeatedly uses Spirit Photography to interrupt Obito’s sleep, treating the surveillance as entertainment while pushing Obito toward exhaustion 221.
- Obito’s confidence as the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki is immediately interrupted when Kinshiki strikes him out of a spatial portal, ruining what he calls his “lucky day” 390.
