Naruto grew up in Konoha as the son of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, with Uzumaki Kuming acting as both his uncle and an early mentor. Kuming trained him in shurikenjutsu and taijutsu, using a five-level target system to track his improvement and Sasuke Uchiha as a motivating rival 294 295.

At the Ninja Academy, Naruto was cheerful and popular among his male classmates, but struggled with written work and classroom theory. His practical ability far outpaced his academic performance; he ranked third in the shuriken assessment and impressed spectators with his combat talent 337 378 384.

Naruto's rivalry with Sasuke began with a park spar and shuriken competition. Though he lost their first contest, he accepted defeat openly and immediately demanded another round 296. After graduation, he joined Kakashi Hatake's Team 7 with Sasuke and Karin 389.
