Background

Madara was originally kind-hearted and desired peace, including friendship with the Senju despite the Uchiha Clan’s enmity with them. His father, Tajima Uchiha, considered this weakness dangerous and arranged cruel circumstances intended to destroy Madara’s compassion and force him to pursue power 113 114.

Tajima imprisoned and humiliated Madara, leaving him unable to save a woman with whom he had a relationship. After eight months of being forced to hear her suffering, Madara awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan; the experience left him driven by anger, hatred, and the conviction that strength was necessary to protect others 114.

Unlike the original course feared by Senju Fujima, Madara accepts peace with Hashirama and ends the Senju–Uchiha war. The two clans unite to establish Konoha, fulfilling the village ideal Madara and Hashirama had imagined as children 11 14.

Appearance

Madara is a spiky-haired Uchiha whose intense presence and severe expression are often described as intimidating. During his God Tree Fruit awakening, his hair turns white and tomoe markings appear across his clothing 125 126.

  • Scarlet Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan eyes.
  • Wears the First Hokage’s haori and hat while acting as village leader 16 60.
  • Carries an Uchiha gunbai in battle 60.
  • Gains a Hashirama-like face on his chest after his God Tree Fruit transformation; a red Nine-Tomoe Rinnegan manifests upon it 125 126.
  • Six Paths Mode changes his hair to gray-white and manifests Truth-Seeking Orbs and the Spear of Heaven 134.

Personality

Madara is fiercely protective of those he considers family or comrades. Izuna is his greatest vulnerability: he repeatedly states that anyone seeking to harm his brother must first kill him, and he is willing to sacrifice his inherited eyes and even his own life for Izuna’s safety 16 19. This protectiveness later extends to Konoha, its inhabitants, Tie Kui, and his son Tenshi 17 137 209.

He is proud, competitive, and enjoys direct combat. He refuses Hashirama’s assistance against Jishiki because he wants to defeat the enemy himself, and he treats powerful Tailed Beasts as opponents to dominate rather than threats to fear 50 132. His arrogance is frequently tempered by tactical awareness: he organizes Konoha’s defenses, carefully assigns political tasks, and accelerates his Rinnegan research after recognizing Black Zetsu as an unseen danger 16 23 38.

Although often ruthless toward opponents, Madara has a gentler side. He comforts Tie Kui, worries about her overusing the Mangekyō Sharingan, and becomes openly affectionate with Kaori Yuhi 137 148 153.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Founding of Konoha

Madara agrees to peace with Hashirama, ending the Uchiha–Senju conflict and joining both clans in building Konoha. Senju Fujima’s proposal leads to a dual leadership system: Madara becomes the First Hokage while Hashirama serves as Deputy Hokage 11 15.

Protecting Konoha and Pursuing the Rinnegan

As Hokage, Madara responds to Kurama’s assault, swats away a Tailed Beast Bomb, and attacks the Nine-Tails with Susanoo 21. Black Zetsu’s apparent involvement convinces him to accelerate Eternal Mangekyō and Rinnegan research, largely to protect Izuna and the village 23 38.

Tailed Beast Campaigns

Madara subdues Shukaku with Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu, forces the One-Tail to dance, and has Tenka Uzumaki seal it into herself 50. He later confronts Son Goku and casually challenges the Four-Tails to “dance” as well 60.

God Tree Fruit Awakening

Senju Fujima gives Madara a God Tree Fruit to help prepare Konoha against the Ōtsutsuki Clan. Madara’s consumption of the fruit grants him Six Paths-level strength, Rinnegan power, Six Paths Mode, and a top-grade bloodline 123 125 127.

Battle with Jishiki Ōtsutsuki

Madara, Hashirama, and Fujima track Jishiki across dimensions after Konoha is attacked and several Tailed Beasts are captured. Madara insists on fighting Jishiki alone, endures Time Stop, and ultimately reveals a technique that allows him to move through stopped time before absorbing Jishiki’s chakra and dōjutsu 131 135.

Ninja World Unification

Madara forces the Four Kage to submit to Konoha, leading to the merger of the major ninja villages. He and Hashirama use a good-cop/bad-cop approach, with Madara serving as the overt threat behind the political settlement 143.

Family, Marriage, and Reconciliation

Madara recognizes Tie Kui as his daughter and takes responsibility for her future. He attempts to mend Uchiha–Senju divisions through a proposed marriage alliance involving Tie Kui and Hiruzen Sarutobi 142 146. He marries Kaori Yuhi in a village-wide celebration and confronts the returned Tajima, who apologizes for his past treatment 153 154.

Renewed Conflict with Hashirama

Years later, Madara challenges Hashirama to prove his ideals. Their ten-day battle ends when Hashirama seals him in a Wood Coffin, though Madara deliberately allows the sealing in order to settle his perceived debt and pursue his own world order 196 198.

Ōtsutsuki Crises and Resurrection

Madara helps face Tenshiki Ōtsutsuki but is severely injured and outmatched alongside Hashirama 209 211. After a later death, the Sage of Six Paths revives him through Rinne Rebirth; Izuna then sacrifices his Six-Tomoe Rinnegan to restore Madara’s vision, prompting Madara to vow to eliminate Kaguya Ōtsutsuki 231.
