Background / History

Madara was believed to have died before the Nine-Tails' Rampage, but had already prepared Obito Uchiha as his puppet and a contingency involving the Rinnegan for his eventual return. Ensei Uchiha identifies him as the former force behind Obito's actions and predicts that he may be resurrected in the future 9.

His resurrection occurs far earlier than Ensei expected. Upon returning, Madara moves to capture the One-Tail in Sunagakure, where he encounters Ensei and immediately recognizes his connection to the Uchiha clan through Obito's reports 61 63. Madara initially treats Ensei as a talented but arrogant junior, though Ensei's Tenseigan techniques force him to reveal his Perfect Susanoo and Limbo: Border Jail 64.

Madara later learns the Flying Thunder God Technique and marks Ensei during their battle, preventing an easy escape. Although he repeatedly holds an advantage through the Rinnegan, Limbo, and Hashirama Cells, Ensei's use of Tenseigan Clone Bodies and the Eight Inner Gates eventually damages Madara badly enough to force a retreat 76 78 110.

Ensei reveals that Black Zetsu manipulated Madara for the purpose of reviving Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, and that Madara is the reincarnation of Indra's chakra. While initially reluctant to accept this account, Madara ultimately investigates and concludes that the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan would make him Kaguya's pawn 104 145.

Abandoning Infinite Tsukuyomi without abandoning his goal of peace, Madara establishes the Land of Akatsuki and begins unifying the Shinobi World through conquest and political control. He occupies the Land of Demons, expands his influence with armies and defecting shinobi, and later presents a new world-order treaty alongside Ensei to the Five Great Shinobi Nations 123 130 188.

Madara and Ensei eventually become uneasy collaborators. Madara trades one Rinnegan and one Mangekyō Sharingan to Ensei in exchange for powerful assets, then later regains both Rinnegan through another eye exchange 144 145 167. After learning that Hashirama Senju has been revived, Madara eagerly resumes their rivalry and defeats Hashirama after an extended battle 152 178 180.

Madara acknowledges that Hashirama Cells and the cost of restoring the Rinnegan are rapidly shortening his lifespan. He nevertheless accepts Ensei's proposal that he serve as emperor during the difficult early phase of global unification 186.

By Chapter 205, Madara has become the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki. His emotions and hostility are amplified by Omnipotence's influence, leading him into another decisive clash with Ensei. Though he withstands Ensei's Sage Mode and fights him evenly in close combat, Ensei concludes that he can defeat Madara—albeit narrowly—and withdraws to address the larger Omnipotence threat 205 206.

Appearance

Madara is depicted with Rinnegan in both eyes following his resurrection. His appearance is restored to his physical prime rather than the elderly condition expected from his first death 63 65.

  • Possesses dual Rinnegan for most of his major conflicts.
  • Uses a complete, armored Perfect Susanoo.
  • Carries Hashirama Cells, granting rapid regeneration and Wood Release.
  • Later manifests the powers of the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki, including Truth-Seeking Orbs 79 177 205.

Personality

Madara is intensely proud, battle-driven, and confident in his own judgment. He initially dismisses Ensei as an insolent descendant, but his attitude shifts into wary respect as Ensei repeatedly escapes or counters techniques that Madara considers decisive 63 80 178.

He values powerful opponents and is willing to tolerate Ensei's provocations because of his strength. His renewed interest in Hashirama and the Ōtsutsuki reflects a desire to confront worthy challenges rather than avoid them 124 152 158.

After recognizing Black Zetsu's manipulation, Madara does not abandon his ideal of peace; instead, he changes methods. He seeks a single unified nation to reduce war, even accepting the burden of ruling it despite his limited remaining lifespan 145 186.

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan

Madara's dual Rinnegan are the foundation of his combat power after resurrection. They grant overwhelming ocular power, access to advanced Six Paths techniques, and the ability to perceive and counter many forms of ninjutsu.

  • Uses Preta Path: Absorption with virtually no preparation time against ordinary ninjutsu 68.
  • Uses Shinra Tensei and Planetary Devastation in combat 78 178.
  • Can dispel the Bringer-of-Darkness Technique through the Rinnegan 179.
  • Cannot naturally revert his revived Rinnegan into Mangekyō Sharingan or access Mangekyō ocular techniques while the Rinnegan are active 147.
  • The Rinnegan's restoration cost and Madara's incomplete Sage Body contribute to his shortened lifespan 186.

Limbo: Border Jail

Madara's signature Rinnegan technique creates up to four invisible Limbo clones with physical capabilities equal to his own.

  • The clones cannot use ninjutsu, but can use chakra-enhanced close combat and act as independent attackers 205.
  • They can substitute for Madara's body to absorb damage, effectively giving him several additional chances to survive 78 107.
  • Their invisibility makes them nearly impossible to counter for opponents below the Six Paths level 64 78.
  • Madara uses Limbo for aerial movement and to attack Hashirama from undetectable angles 178.
  • Hashirama temporarily seals the clones with Sage Art: Gate of the Great God 179.

Perfect Susanoo

Madara can manifest a complete Perfect Susanoo powered by the immense ocular strength of the Rinnegan.

  • Its strength greatly exceeds Ensei's earlier incomplete Susanoo manifestations 64.
  • It can clash directly with Ensei's own Perfect Susanoo 76 110.
  • Madara augments it with techniques such as Yasaka Magatama and later the power of a Cursed Seal 205.
  • It is ultimately shattered by Ensei's Sage Mode-enhanced force during their Ten-Tails battle 206.

Flying Thunder God Technique

Madara learns Tobirama Senju's space-time technique through his talent, intelligence network, and Rinnegan-enhanced capabilities.

  • Marks Ensei's shoulder during their Valley of the End confrontation, restricting his ability to flee 76.
  • Uses the technique to evade Ensei's Night Guy assault and retreat from battle 110.
  • Relies on Flying Thunder God as an emergency escape when Ensei unexpectedly appears during his confrontation with Hashirama 177.

Hashirama Cells and Wood Release

Madara's body contains Hashirama Cells, granting him exceptional recovery and access to Wood Release.

  • Regenerates visible injuries rapidly, making ordinary damage ineffective 79.
  • Uses Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence against Hashirama 177.
  • The cells are not fully compatible with his body and continue to erode his lifespan 186.

Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki Power

Madara later becomes the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki, drastically increasing his physical abilities and chakra reserves.

  • His strength in this state is described as approaching a significant fraction of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's power 205.
  • Wields Truth-Seeking Orbs, including a staff-shaped form for close combat 206.
  • His enhanced body reverses Ensei's usual physical advantage, allowing Madara to match him directly in taijutsu 205 206.
  • Does not gain the ability to track Ensei through space-time fluctuations despite becoming the Ten-Tails' Jinchūriki 206.

Relationships

  • Ensei Uchiha — Rival, recurring enemy, and eventual political collaborator. Madara initially tests Ensei's potential, later recognizes that Ensei has surpassed him, and agrees to work toward a unified Shinobi World under Ensei's guidance 63 145 186 188.
  • Hashirama Senju — Lifelong rival. Madara is eager to fight him again after his resurrection and ultimately defeats him in their renewed battle 152 178 180.
  • Obito Uchiha — Former puppet and subordinate. Madara's complete resurrection reduces Obito to a puppet-like role, and Obito repeatedly acts to support Madara's plans 64 86.
  • Black Zetsu — Formerly regarded as the manifestation of Madara's will; later revealed to have manipulated him toward Kaguya's resurrection 31 104 145.
  • Nagato — A contingency for Madara's resurrection. Madara acknowledges that Nagato's existence was intended to provide another path for his return should his plans fail 196.
  • Orochimaru II — Associate in the Land of Akatsuki's expansion and financial planning 151 152.

Trivia

  • He considers Ensei's rapid growth more troubling than his own historical battle with Hashirama 80.
  • Madara’s first instinct under sudden threat during his later fight with Hashirama is to escape with Flying Thunder God rather than use Limbo as a substitute 177.
  • His revived body cannot freely switch between Rinnegan and Mangekyō Sharingan states, unlike certain later Six Paths-level dōjutsu users 147.
