| Classification | Energy formed from physical and spiritual energy; later identified as an external power originating from the Ōtsutsuki Clan 3 120 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 3: I Want to Learn Medical Ninjutsu 3 |
Nature and Origin
Chakra is conventionally understood in the shinobi world as the fusion of physical energy and spiritual energy. Ensei Uchiha’s research concludes that its presence in the world originates from the Ōtsutsuki Clan rather than being a native power. 3 120
The ability to refine Chakra requires a “seed.” People who have never encountered such a seed cannot refine it, while shinobi are described as having already been infiltrated by Ōtsutsuki power. Ensei further theorizes that Kekkei Genkai clans are descendants of the Ōtsutsuki. 128
- Chakra can dissipate back into physical and spiritual energy; it does not naturally become Natural Energy. 128
- Ōtsutsuki consider Chakra their essential substance rather than merely a weapon or resource. 175
- The Chakra Fruit is a source of extraordinary power; after consuming a genuine fruit, Ensei’s existing abilities were enhanced and he awakened the Heavenly Eye. 244
Chakra and Will
Ordinary Chakra’s spiritual component functions as energy, allowing chakra stolen or absorbed from others to be used by a new wielder. Chakra becomes fundamentally different when its owner’s will is imprinted into it. 120
Karma
Karma is Chakra containing the complete information and will of an individual. It can preserve that individual’s existence and allow resurrection through a suitable vessel. 167 243
- Ensei identifies his unique Chakra as an incomplete or degraded form of his own Karma after separating his spirit from his body. 119
- He determines that fully imprinting one’s will into Chakra is the Ōtsutsuki method called Karma. 120
- Kaguya later confirms that Karma’s essential principle is giving Chakra a will of its own. 243
- Chakra reincarnation, such as the cycle involving Indra and Asura, is considered a weaker manifestation of this principle. 104
Will-Integrated Chakra
Ensei’s will-integrated Chakra can dominate foreign spiritual residues and resist extraction.
- He erases the chaotic spiritual fragments within Ten-Tails-derived flesh by flooding it with Chakra bearing his will. 129
- Ōtsutsuki Isshiki cannot absorb Ensei’s Chakra because it possesses a unique will. 172
- Urashiki’s chakra-stealing fishhook cannot move Ensei’s Chakra, which behaves “like a solid entity” under his control. 223
Interaction with Natural Energy
Chakra and Natural Energy are separate powers. They may be combined in Sage Mode, but they cannot truly fuse into one energy. 128
| Form / Process | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Sage Chakra | A composite of Chakra and Natural Energy used in Sage Mode; it enhances the user and cannot be completely absorbed by the Rinnegan. 100 |
| Natural Energy absorption | Requires sufficient Chakra to stabilize the absorbed energy; failure can petrify the user. 60 100 |
| Natural Energy → Chakra | Requires a medium, such as specialized cells, a Tailed Beast, or Ten-Tails-derived material. 128 |
| Chakra → Natural Energy | Ensei’s initial attempt fails; Chakra instead breaks down into physical and spiritual energy when dispersed. 128 |
| Imitation God Tree | Absorbs Natural Energy as nourishment, then synthesizes Chakra within itself rather than directly converting the two energies. 129 |
Properties and Applications
Ninjutsu Fuel
Chakra is the basis for shinobi techniques and physical enhancement. Even basic actions such as wall-walking require Chakra extraction and control. 3
- Transformation requires Chakra to envelop and alter the user’s form while reproducing the target’s physical details. 16
- Massive Chakra reserves allow techniques on otherwise Jinchūriki-scale, such as hardening a vast battlefield. 40
- Ensei eventually reaches a point where he treats Chakra itself as his primary offensive tool rather than relying on conventional ninjutsu. 172
Absorption and Transfer
Chakra can be extracted, transferred, suppressed, and absorbed through various techniques and ocular powers.
- The Tenseigan can absorb Chakra at range, with physical contact increasing the rate of absorption. 77
- Tenseigan Chakra can seal a target’s Chakra and temporarily take control of their body. 52
- The Rinnegan can absorb Chakra-based techniques, though Sage Chakra and Natural Energy create risks for the absorber. 43 100
- Chakra carrying its owner’s will is substantially harder to absorb or manipulate than ordinary Chakra. 120 172 223
Sealing
Sealing techniques can convert physical material into a form Chakra can contain before storing it within a seal. 182
- Ensei used this principle to transform and seal more than 100,000 Byakugan within his body as a massive Chakra reserve. 47 119
- The sealed ocular power gives him immense reserves but leaves his internal Chakra chaotic and difficult to fully control. 119 129
- Releasing the sealed Byakugan all at once would cause their ocular power to destroy his body. 129
Research and Major Discoveries
| Milestone | Chapter | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ensei begins systematic Chakra research through medical-ninjutsu materials. | 3 | He questions the shinobi world’s conventional understanding of Chakra and seeks its true nature. |
| Ensei studies Tailed Beast Chakra during the Nine-Tails’ rampage. | 4 | He collects shed Nine-Tails Chakra for comparative research. |
| Ensei discovers his personal, will-bearing Chakra. | 119 | He identifies it as a likely incomplete form of Karma and begins replacing foreign spiritual energy within himself. |
| Ensei recognizes Shadow Clones as vessels of will rather than independent souls. | 120 | This clarifies that Chakra can preserve memories and decision-making without splitting the original soul. |
| Ensei investigates Chakra–Natural Energy conversion. | 128 | Direct Chakra-to-Natural-Energy conversion fails, establishing that the two powers are fundamentally distinct. |
| Ensei creates the Imitation God Tree. | 129 | By overwriting Ten-Tails-derived spiritual fragments with his will, he creates a controllable lifeform that can merge with his body. |
| Isshiki fails to absorb Ensei’s Chakra. | 172 | Ensei demonstrates that Chakra fully integrated with its wielder’s will resists conventional absorption. |
| Kaguya explains Karma’s principle. | 243 | Karma is confirmed to be the process of embedding one’s will into Chakra. |
Limitations and Risks
- Chakra gathered from external sources can contain foreign spiritual residues or wills, creating the risk of possession, rejection, or loss of control. 120 129
- The Spirit Transformation Technique consumes increasing amounts of Chakra the longer a soul remains outside its body. 119
- Ensei’s vast Tenseigan-derived reserves may appear inexhaustible, but his own personal Chakra can still become depleted. 119
- Sage Chakra requires careful balance; uncontrolled Natural Energy can petrify a body or destabilize its Chakra. 60 100
- Chakra-based power alone does not guarantee safety: Ensei considers becoming a Ten-Tails Jinchūriki an unacceptable route because of the danger of becoming Kaguya’s vessel. 128 129
