History

Postwar instability and the Nine-Tails' Rampage

Konoha had only recently emerged from the Third Shinobi World War and had not yet recovered its former prosperity when Minato Namikaze became Hokage 1 2. The Nine-Tails' Rampage subsequently threw the village into chaos, overwhelming its internal security forces and allowing spies and other actors to move within the village 4.

In the aftermath, Minato fell into a coma from severe mental trauma, and Hiruzen Sarutobi returned as Hokage 5. Tensions between Konoha and the Uchiha Clan worsened: the clan was relocated to the village outskirts, far from the central district, while the increasingly visible Ninja Cat Clan drew ANBU scrutiny through its association with Ensei Uchiha 6.

Uchiha integration and Root crisis

After Ensei confronted Konoha's leadership over Danzō Shimura's theft of Sharingan, Hiruzen negotiated a compromise with the Uchiha Clan 9 11. The settlement altered the village's internal balance:

• The Uchiha relinquished half of their Konoha Military Police Force authority, allowing members of other clans to join it. 10
• Uchiha shinobi began taking regular village missions rather than remaining concentrated in clan duties. 11
• Long-overdue compensation for the Uchiha relocation was paid in full. 11
• The clan formed a ten-member Purge Squad of Three Tomoe Sharingan users to target organizations seeking to steal Sharingan. Ensei became its captain. 11

Hiruzen imposed restrictions on Root after reviewing its personnel records and experimental data, but did not fully dismantle the organization 11. When former Root members infiltrated the Uchiha compound, they were captured and publicly escorted to the Hokage Office, further demonstrating the Uchiha's expanded influence within Konoha 29.

Conflict with Kumogakure

Kumogakure's peace delegation attempted to infiltrate both the Uchiha and Hyuga compounds. Konoha's Uchiha patrols captured one infiltrator, while Ensei intercepted the other after the Hyuga compound was breached 36. The incident escalated when two Kumogakure shinobi were killed, and Ensei demanded an explanation under threat of war 37.

Konoha began wartime preparations and dispatched a force composed primarily of jōnin to the Land of Lightning border under Ensei's command 38. The campaign relied on unconventional resources, including a massive tide of modified ninja beasts that forced Kumogakure to mobilize Earth Release users to reshape the terrain 39 40.

Madara Uchiha's return and the Fourth Shinobi World War

When Madara Uchiha returned with the Rinnegan, Ensei warned Minato that Konoha could not handle the threat alone and called for a Five Kage Summit 66. Konoha maintained its barriers continuously because of the threat posed by Obito Uchiha; while the barriers could not stop space-time ninjutsu, they could detect its fluctuations 66.

The village later faced pressure from the other great shinobi villages to send Ensei against Madara. Ensei refused to engage unless the destruction of the Shinobi World directly threatened Konoha, while Minato struggled to maintain the wider alliance 127. During the war, Konoha remained comparatively secure because of Ensei's power, even as other villages suffered catastrophic losses 143.

Konoha was also attacked during Ensei's absence, but he returned and defeated the invading forces alone 166.

The new world order

Following the deaths of the daimyo and the collapse of the former political order, Konoha helped suppress regional rebellions. Minato mobilized Uchiha shinobi and requested the Ninja Cat Clan's assistance; Ensei accepted and deployed the clan alongside Hinata Hyuga and Uchiha Hikari 181.

At the Five Kage Summit, Minato was the first major-village leader to accept Madara's treaty. Konoha agreed to honor the ruler of the Land of Akatsuki and lost its full autonomy, with major decisions becoming subject to centralized directives 188.

The resulting peace enabled rapid infrastructure and commercial development. Roads connected the shinobi villages, and Konoha became a major destination for merchants because of its relative safety 188 189.
