Background / History

Lordaeron was among the northern human city-states established after settlers crossed the Wall of Thoradin to reclaim new lands following the Troll Wars. Its people later developed a longstanding pride in having driven Trolls from human territory without outside aid. 20

During King Terenas's peacetime rule, the kingdom used economic incentives to reclaim land in northern Silverpine Forest and western Tirisfal Glades. Timber and ore from Silverpine supported trade through Hillsbrad and the Arathi Highlands, while newly cultivated farms made western Tirisfal a major agricultural region. 2

When Dalaran warned Terenas of the Orc war against Stormwind, Lordaeron began preparing before most northern kingdoms took the threat seriously. Terenas organized local militias, ordered a post-Harvest Festival purge of hostile humanoid groups, and later assembled supplies and warriors after Brewfest. 12 21 28

After Stormwind City fell, Lordaeron received Anduin Lothar, Prince Varian Wrynn, and Stormwind refugees. Terenas summoned the other human rulers to the capital, where the Alliance of Arathor was formally established against the Horde. 39 43 44

Territory and Economy

• Eastern Tirisfal Glades — A primary grain-producing region containing major farms such as Felstone Field, Dalson's Tears, and Gareth's Farm. 10
• Andorhal — A transport hub on Lake Darrowmere whose river access, fertile surroundings, and commerce made it an important inland town. 10
• Silverpine Forest — Source of substantial timber and ore transported toward Hillsbrad and the Arathi Highlands. 2
• Stratholme and Northland Fortress — Major supply centers during the Zul'Aman campaign; warehouses at Northland Fortress were filled by caravans bringing grain and goods from multiple kingdoms and races. 34
• Northrend holdings — Lordaeron held territory in the Howling Fjord and Grizzly Hills, where local human populations had become its vassals after receiving priestly aid and the teachings of the Holy Light. 14
• Northern trade route — Each summer, Lordaeron fleets traveled from Stratholme to Northrend to purchase furs and rare minerals; North Sea piracy eventually restricted the route largely to Lordaeron, Kul Tiras, and major noble merchant fleets. 14

Government and Society

King Terenas ruled from the royal palace and initially intended for Arthas to inherit the kingdom. His second son, Alvin, was originally planned to receive Lordaeron territories in Northrend upon adulthood, though this was later changed to a mandate to lead a force to Kalimdor. 1 14 46

Lordaeron's succession customs favored primogeniture: the eldest son inherited titles and property, while younger sons generally received funds or served the heir. This made Alvin's status as a prince less politically secure than Arthas's despite his exceptional talent. 6

The kingdom's society was marked by confidence in human dominance and prejudice toward other races. Many citizens regarded even Stormwind's people as inferior outsiders and failed to recognize the Orcs as a serious danger until the fall of Stormwind City. 12 20

Military and War Effort

Internal Mobilization

Terenas used the anticipated war to organize militia training and clear hostile Gnoll and Kobold groups from within the kingdom. The operation was intended both to stabilize the rear and to give inexperienced recruits battlefield experience before the Orc invasion. 12 21

More than half of the Blackpaw Gnolls surrendered to Lordaeron, enabling the kingdom to identify remaining Gnoll groups. Those who defected were placed under Archbishop Alonsus Faol, while later captives were sent to Stratholme. 28

Zul'Aman Campaign

Lordaeron fielded more than 20,000 troops against Zul'Aman, including human soldiers, Blackpaw Gnolls, and Gnoll captives. Commander Maxwell's strategy used captives in successive assault waves against scattered Troll forces. 35

The campaign achieved a victory over the Trolls with limited human casualties, though Gnoll losses and destroyed siege equipment were substantial. The war was later rushed to a conclusion after news arrived that Stormwind had fallen and the Orc threat was moving north. 38 39

Alliance Logistics

Lordaeron's year-long stockpiling in Stratholme, Andorhal, and the capital was sufficient to supply Alliance soldiers for several years. Its army, alongside Stromgarde's forces and Kul Tiras's navy, formed the expected core of the Alliance war effort. 49

At Alvin's urging, Terenas pressed the Alliance council to increase the deployment of heavy ballistae. These weapons were later used against Horde-controlled Red Dragons during the naval battle. 53
