Background / History
Saiyan Prince
At five years old, Vegeta fought alongside Nappa and Raditz during a planetary extermination campaign. Uninjured after the battle, he ordered the remaining inhabitants killed and ignored the summons to return to Planet Vegeta. His absence spared him from Frieza's destruction of the Saiyan homeworld. 2 3
Frieza's forces considered Vegeta the most gifted surviving Saiyan child, with Dodoria proposing that he be kept close to Frieza so his development could be controlled. 3
Invasion of Earth
Vegeta and Nappa arrive on Earth seeking the fighter responsible for Raditz's death. Vegeta acts as the calculating leader of the pair, restraining Nappa's impulsiveness and granting Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan three hours to summon Goku. 28 34
He dismisses Goku as a low-class warrior, defeats him through a brutal battle, and creates an Artificial Full Moon to become a Great Ape. Yajirobe eventually severs his tail, forcing him back to base form. 44 47 48
Vegeta recognizes Luo Tian as the former Captain of the Guard from Planet Vegeta and intends to make the healer serve him so that he can pursue the Super Saiyan legend. 45
Namek and Frieza
On Namek, Vegeta learns that Frieza—not a meteor—destroyed Planet Vegeta. He rejects Scouter dependence after learning ki sensing from observing Earth's fighters, kills Dodoria, and hunts the Dragon Balls to gain the means to overthrow Frieza. 69 70
His repeated near-death recoveries rapidly increase his strength. He defeats Zarbon after Zarbon transforms, later crushes Recoome, and reaches a combat power of roughly 500,000 before killing Jeice. 83 92 103
Vegeta initially seeks healing from Dende only to gain another recovery boost, but Dende refuses because Vegeta murdered Namekians. Luo Tian ultimately heals him instead, allowing Vegeta to confront Frieza at two million combat power. 110
Despite his confidence, Frieza overwhelms him. Vegeta is killed, then revived by Earth's Shenron when the wish restores those killed by Frieza's forces. 112 121
Life on Earth and the Androids
After Namek, Vegeta becomes involved with Bulma's circle and is dating her friend Emily within a year of his return to Earth. 125 127
He trains obsessively to surpass Goku, uses a gravity room, and later enters the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with Trunks. This training lets him overwhelm Cell after Cell's power increases. 149 155
Vegeta calls himself “Super Vegeta” while dominating Cell, though later events show that Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 power has surpassed him. 156 169
Majin Buu Conflict
Seeking enough strength to defeat Goku, Vegeta knowingly accepts Babidi's control and becomes Majin Vegeta. Babidi draws out his latent power, but Vegeta admits that his motive is to return to a more ruthless version of himself and fight Goku without restraint. 223 230
His Great Ape-based Super Saiyan 4 initially dominates Goku, but the form depends on the Artificial Full Moon and can be neutralized by destroying his tail. 229 231
Vegeta helps destroy Majin Buu once, only for Buu to regenerate. He then chooses to face Buu alone rather than risk Earth being destroyed, knocking out Trunks and Goten to keep them safe. 238 239
After returning from death through Fortuneteller Baba, he develops a moonless Great Ape form and again challenges Buu. Although Buu defeats him, Vegeta's willingness to protect Trunks and the Earth marks a major shift from his earlier priorities. 272 274
Later Battles
Vegeta trains beyond Super Saiyan 4 after the Buu conflict and confronts Beerus, landing a punch that briefly angers the God of Destruction before Beerus overwhelms him. 283 366
In the Universe 6 tournament, he defeats Magetta by exploiting the Metalman's sensitivity to insults, forces Cabba to awaken as a Super Saiyan by threatening Planet Sadala, and is eliminated by Hit's Time Skip. 302 305
During the Future Trunks crisis, Vegeta protects Trunks and Mai, then defeats Goku Black in Super Saiyan 4 after exposing Black's inability to fully use Goku's stolen body. 330 331
Against Moro, Vegeta initially fights to protect Namek's people, then travels to Yardrat to learn Spirit Control. He returns with Forced Spirit Fission, using it to return Moro's stolen energy to its original owners and restore Namekian lives and the planet's vitality. 379 398 399 421 423
Appearance
Vegeta is a short Saiyan with a tail, which he regrows after its loss on Earth. His appearance changes drastically with his transformations, from golden-haired Super Saiyan states to giant golden Great Ape forms and a red-tailed Super Saiyan 4. 34 80 331
- Retains a Saiyan tail after its regrowth on Namek. 80
- Produces a golden aura when transforming into a Super Saiyan. 136
- Takes the form of a giant golden-furred Great Ape when using his Great Ape-based Super Saiyan power. 230
- Super Saiyan 4 features a red tail. 331
- Super Saiyan 4 Full Power is distinguished by red hair. 421
Personality
Vegeta is fiercely proud of his status as the Saiyan Prince and regards himself as a warrior born to stand above others. He repeatedly measures his worth against Goku, resents being surpassed by him or Gohan, and pursues power even when doing so risks humiliation or defeat. 47 169 194
Early in the story, he is cruel, dismissive of weaker people, and willing to massacre entire populations. He kills Dodoria and Zarbon without mercy, threatens Krillin and Bulma for the Dragon Balls, and originally treats Earth as a world to conquer or destroy. 2 70 82 83
His pride also makes him resourceful. He learns ki sensing by observing Earthlings, creates Artificial Moons for battle, seeks the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and later accepts Yardratian instruction when he realizes power alone cannot defeat Moro. 69 149 229 399
Over time, Vegeta becomes protective of his family, allies, Earth, and the Namekians he once harmed. Piccolo interprets his battle against Moro as an effort to atone for his past atrocities. 239 379 422
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Physiology
Vegeta possesses the Saiyan ability to become stronger after surviving severe injuries.
- Near-death recovery raises his combat power dramatically, including increases from roughly 50,000 to 80,000 and later to 500,000. 83 103
- Can transform into a Great Ape by viewing an Artificial Full Moon. 44
- Initially depends on both his tail and the Artificial Full Moon for Great Ape transformation. 231
- Later overcomes the moon requirement and transforms through his own power. 272 273
Ki Sensing
Vegeta abandons Scouter technology after learning to sense ki from Earth's fighters.
- Can detect opponents' energy and track their general location. 69
- His early ki sensing is imprecise; Krillin, Gohan, and Dende evade him by suppressing their energy. 70
- Uses his perception to identify Frieza's position and save Gohan from a surprise attack. 111
Artificial Full Moon
Vegeta can condense an energy sphere into an artificial moon to trigger a Great Ape transformation.
- Enables Great Ape transformation when no natural full moon is available. 44
- Drains a significant amount of energy to create, leaving him vulnerable in prolonged battles. 230
- Becomes unnecessary after he masters moonless transformation. 273
Spirit Control
Under Pybara's guidance, Vegeta learns Yardratian Spirit Control, the discipline governing the movement, division, and expansion of ki.
- Learns to use Instant Transmission, though his early attempts can place him inaccurately. 399 420
- Unlocks power that Pybara identifies as Vegeta's true strength, previously limited by poor balance between his body and Spirit Control. 408
- Develops a personal technique rather than copying Goku's path. 367 399
Forced Spirit Fission
Vegeta's signature Spirit Control technique separates energy absorbed or stolen by an opponent.
- Gradually drains Moro's accumulated energy through physical strikes. 421
- Returns released energy to its original owners, reviving Namekians and restoring Namek's vitality. 422
- Requires physical contact; Moro later evades Vegeta's attacks specifically to prevent the technique from working. 423
Martial Arts and Energy Combat
Vegeta is an aggressive close-range fighter who supplements rapid melee attacks with ki blasts.
- Overwhelms opponents such as Zarbon, Recoome, Cell, Cabba, and Goku Black through speed and sustained strikes. 83 92 155 156 303 331
- Can fire powerful mouth-based energy blasts as a Great Ape. 230 273
- His strategy often centers on forcing an opponent to reveal weaknesses, as with Magetta's insecurity and Goku Black's inability to access Goku's higher transformations. 302 331
