Fahui serves as the gem-adorned abbot of Tongtai Temple and is deeply enmeshed in the Southern Liang court. During deliberations over Hou Jing’s rebellion, he supports appointing Xiao Zhengde as General Who Pacifies the North, standing against Fu Qi’s objections. Zhu Yuanzhang identifies Fahui’s faction as officials already won over by Xiao Zhengde. 22 23

After the appointment, Fahui tells Zhu Yuanzhang that Emperor Wu of Liang’s fortune has run dry. He later explains that he backed Xiao Zhengde because the prince possesses exceptional royal aura; Fahui hopes that preserving Xiao Zhengde, whether victorious or defeated, will leave Tongtai Temple a path to survive the Liang dynasty’s fall. 23 24
