Background

Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama, the grandniece of the Second Hokage, Senju Tobirama, and a disciple of the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen. Her lineage makes her a prominent figure within Konoha and the Hokage’s faction. 4

The decline of the Senju Clan weighs on her. While observing the Senju estate filled with visitors, she recalls when it was populated by clansmen before the First Shinobi World War took their lives. 30

She regularly lectures at the Ninja Academy’s Medical Class, partly to oversee her younger brother Nawaki. During one lecture, she meets Uchiha Chonhua and Namikaze Minato. Chonhua’s politeness and interest in medical ninjutsu challenge her assumptions about the Uchiha; she acknowledges that he differs from the clan members she had previously known. 6

Chonhua later visits the Senju estate under the pretext of spending time with Nawaki.
