Background / History

Land of Rain mission

Uchiha Shohei assigned Chonhua to Fugaku's all-Uchiha team, ostensibly to protect Fugaku. Fugaku initially distrusted Chonhua's role and strength, but accepted him after Chonhua demonstrated his Three-Tomoe Sharingan and exceptional sensory abilities; the two then established a working captain-subordinate relationship 60 61.

Fugaku led the unit cautiously through Amegakure territory. He supported Chonhua's recommendation to leave frightened civilians unharmed, interrogated captured Amegakure shinobi for intelligence, and assessed enemy supply camps and fortifications 62. To draw Salamander Hanzō's attention, he devised a plan to use Sunagakure's raid on Amegakure supplies to provoke a wider conflict involving Sunagakure, Iwagakure, and Amegakure; thirty Konoha ninja chose to follow his plan 64.

During the ensuing fighting, Fugaku used Fire Style, a chakra-infused longsword, and steel wire techniques against Iwagakure forces. An Explosion Release ninja's clone blast severely wounded him, but Chonhua treated him and kept him alive 65 66. Fugaku later confronted Pakura and her Scorch Release while attempting to protect Uchiha Choji, but her heat vaporized his chakra-infused blade and overwhelmed his Fire Style 69 70.

After Pakura killed Uchiha Shuren, Uchiha Zeping, and Uchiha Lin, Fugaku retrieved their Three-Tomoe Sharingan and sent them to the Uchiha clan shrine through a Ninja Cat, preserving the clan's bloodline after their deaths 73.

Betrayal and resurrection

Fugaku proposed using Iwagakure corpses to lure enemy forces from their stronghold, then capturing the position in a pincer operation. He secured apparent Anbu support for the plan after verifying their Konoha cipher 75. The supposed Anbu were actually hostile infiltrators led by Muramasa; Fugaku's misplaced trust left his team surrounded and badly wounded 82 83.

Muramasa bound Fugaku with the Self-Exerting Curse Binding Seal and stabbed him through the heart. Fugaku nevertheless survived by activating Izanagi, at the cost of permanently blinding his right eye 83 85. Chonhua subsequently tried to remove Fugaku's remaining eye to prevent a second use of Izanagi, but an unknown summoning technique extracted Fugaku before the attempt succeeded 85 86.

After returning to Konoha, Fugaku replaced his blinded right eye with Uchiha Shuren's Sharingan. He regarded the transplanted eye as carrying Shuren's will and intended to see the world in his fallen comrade's stead 102.

Clan-head succession conflict

Following Shohei's death, Fugaku delivered his father's funeral eulogy 117. He later joined Uchiha Hezang in attempting to delay Chonhua's bid for clan head by stressing Chonhua's ties to the Hokage faction and provoking him into displaying his strength 120.

Chonhua defeated Fugaku and the remaining opposition without using his Sharingan, becoming the new Uchiha Clan Head. Fugaku and his faction subsequently resigned from the Konoha Military Police Force in opposition to Chonhua's reorganization of the institution 123 124.

Personality

Fugaku is a serious, ambitious strategist who prefers indirect advantages over reckless assaults. He evaluates enemy logistics, terrain, and force disposition before committing his unit, as shown by his plan to turn the Land of Rain's competing villages against one another 62 64.

He takes responsibility for his subordinates and Konoha comrades. He supported sparing civilians, tried to shield Choji from Pakura, and preserved the Sharingan of deceased clansmen for the clan shrine 62 70 73. His greatest failure was trusting the false Anbu credentials during the Iwagakure operation; after the betrayal, he blamed himself for leading his allies into a massacre 83.

Fugaku is deeply committed to Uchiha interests and the Military Police Force. This commitment later put him at odds with Chonhua's leadership and his proposal to open the force to outsiders 124 126.
