Background / History

Zhou Yu was the Seventh Prince of the Land of Fire. To avoid becoming entangled in the succession struggle, he left the imperial palace when young and did not cultivate. In the Land of Fire's Ancestral Land, he encountered a cherry blossom tree and formed a bond with it. When he was later hunted, the tree saved him, exposed its aura, and ultimately sacrificed itself by merging into his body. 1688

After Akatsuki discovered his identity, Zhou Yu agreed to join Pain in exchange for an oath concerning Ling Luo's possible resurrection. He became Akatsuki's sixth core member, took the codename Kong Chen, received the blood-red Kong ring for his left thumb, and was granted authority to appoint up to twelve guardians. 304

Kong Chen initially sought to test Azure Dragon's worth as a teammate and challenged the organization to prove his own strength. Though he respected strength and came to acknowledge Pain's power, he remained hostile, proud, and driven by Ling Luo's fate. 338 339

His vengeance against the Land of Fire's imperial clan became a defining part of his later actions. Inside the Four Red Yang Formation, he confronted his former relatives and massacred the trapped cultivators with the Cherry Blossom Realm.
