Background
Sophia is the daughter of Professor Merv, a history professor at Goldenburg University. Born in the Loselin Empire and raised in Enamel City, she accompanied her father on a trip to the Rhine Kingdom; a mudslide stranded them in Mist Valley County during their return journey. 89
In Mist Valley County, Sophia and her father became trapped in a fog-bound labyrinth of ruined streets. After a gravely wounded Armed Patrol member warned them to hide, she helped carry him into Mansion 101 while hound-like creatures pursued them. When Professor Merv collapsed and an apparent monster entered the building, Sophia hid both unconscious men and armed herself with a small knife, intending to protect them rather than use the blade for the suicide purpose for which such knives were traditionally carried by Loselin girls. 89
She attacked the intruder, believing him to be a monster, but was immediately subdued by Ludwig von Hastings. After learning that Ludwig had saved her and treated her father’s early-stage Psionic Sickness, Sophia became grateful to him; the three later escaped the labyrinth and traveled to Enamel City together. 90 93
Sophia’s photographic memory drew Ludwig’s attention during the journey. Recognizing both her memorization talent and her composure under pressure, he resolved to recruit her. 114 115
Following the Golden Dream Opera House incident, Sophia’s long-standing nightmares and psionic erosion became severe enough that Ludwig chose to help her ignite her Soul Fire. She accepted the ritual after learning more about the supernatural world and became a spellcaster. 193 194
Appearance
Sophia is a petite young woman with light brown hair and blue eyes. Her appearance is generally neat and modest, though she is easily flustered when caught unprepared. 91 138
- Light brown hair, originally worn in two long braids; later described as long, wavy hair braided over one shoulder. 91 167
- Blue eyes described as “blue as a lake.” 95
- Usually wears conservative dresses, including a light gray dress with a blue-gray jacket and flat Mary Jane shoes. 91
- Carries herself with a soft, gentle demeanor that conceals considerable resolve. 115
Personality
Sophia is gentle, polite, and easily embarrassed, particularly around Ludwig. Her affection for him is complicated by insecurity over their difference in status and by her fear that people such as Livini Marshall belong more naturally to Ludwig’s world than she does. 167 169
Beneath her sheltered upbringing, Sophia is resilient and decisive. In Mist Valley County, she remained functional while surrounded by monsters and unconscious companions, hid those in her care, and attempted a surprise attack despite believing the odds were hopeless. 89 90 Ludwig later identifies this inner strength as the quality hidden beneath her lamb-like outward demeanor. 115
After becoming involved in Ludwig’s affairs, Sophia proves capable of handling negotiations and business plans with little instruction. Her nerves, memory, and ability to stay composed make her highly effective as his secretary. 197
Abilities & Skills
Photographic Memory
Sophia can accurately retain and reproduce text after seeing it once.
- Transcribed a page of unfamiliar cuneiform-like inscriptions and accompanying Aramaic without pausing to recall it. 114
- Her talent was significant enough that Professor Merv believed she could have qualified for Imperial University if not barred by gender. 114
- Ludwig regards her as a key talent for managing the information-heavy demands of his future enterprise. 115
Gate of Stars
Sophia’s Secret Art manifests a large silver-violet key and functions through the act of opening doors. 196
- Can open any door in the Material Realm if it has a lock that the key can open. 196
- Can connect a door to the Void. 196
- Each Void door opens near a Void Entity suited to Sophia’s immediate needs; she may summon it after forming a contract. 196
- Can create unusual passageways: a door formed through Golden Afterglow allowed passage from a created Opera House space to the real Golden Dream Opera House’s fire escape. 196
- The ability is considered extremely dangerous if exposed, as it can create a two-way gateway to the Void. 196
- Ludwig orders Sophia to publicly describe the art only as opening Material Realm doors and conceals its summoning function from the Night Duty Bureau and State Church. 196
Summoning
Sophia can choose and call forth contracted entities through Gate of Stars.
- Form of Flowing Light — can be sealed with an alchemical mirror to control its side effects. 198
- Steam Spirit — one of the three spirits selected by Sophia. 198
- Frost Maiden — its effects are countered with a ghostly-blue-flame hand-warmer. 198
Business Administration
Sophia becomes Ludwig’s secretary, though her authority extends beyond clerical work.
- Handles Ludwig’s business plans after he shifts his investments toward factories and food-processing plants. 197
- Learns negotiation techniques with minimal guidance. 197
- Uses her memory, composure, and organizational ability to support Ludwig’s expanding enterprise. 197
Equipment
- Small knife — Originally carried as a letter opener and, by Loselin custom, a suicide blade; Sophia uses it in an attempted ambush during the Mist Valley incident. 89 90
- Small pistol — Kept concealed in her vest for close-range self-defense. 167
- Iron Sparrow Revolver — Given to her by Ludwig during the Phantom of Gold incident for immediate protection. 189
- Golden Afterglow — Ludwig gives her this spell/weapon as an escape measure should she be hunted. 196
- Defensive alchemical accessories — Glasses, watches, bracelet, ankle ornaments, and rings inscribed with shield runes; collectively protect against mental attacks, illusions, and physical harm. 197
- Alchemical mirror — Can seal a Form of Flowing Light. 198
- Ghost-flame hand-warmer — Counters the Frost Maiden’s side effects. 198
- Dustproof poison-filtering mask — Intended to protect her while exploring hazardous environments. 198
Relationships
- Ludwig von Hastings / Lude — Savior, employer, and romantic partner. He rescues Sophia and Professor Merv in Mist Valley County, later helps her awaken as a spellcaster, equips her for self-defense, and makes her his secretary. 91 194 197
- Professor Merv — Father. Sophia is deeply concerned for his safety during the Mist Valley crisis; he is proud of her photographic memory and ultimately accepts her feelings for Ludwig. 89 114 124
- Mrs. Merna — Mother. Sophia’s family home becomes Ludwig’s residence in Enamel City, and Mrs. Merna is aware of Sophia’s closeness with him. 114 193
- Livini Marshall — Perceived romantic rival. Sophia is intimidated by Livini’s high status and feels that Livini and Ludwig belong to the same hidden world. 167 169
