Appearance
Kaqi are powerful, arthropod-derived humanoids. Their physiology is suited to close-quarters combat and allows them to move securely through difficult terrain such as elevated rail lines. 416 453 470
- Multiple pairs of compound eyes; Kaqi soldiers can track incoming projectiles through a Bio-Computer in the brain. 416
- Four arms, commonly described as upper and lower pairs of claws. 416
- Powerful hind legs capable of explosive bursts of speed. 427
- Tails and multiple gripping limbs, enabling them to anchor themselves to rails from several angles. 470
- Mandibles and hard double jaws; their mouthparts produce clicking sounds, reflected in the prevalence of “Ka” in Kaqi names. 464 481
- Elite Kaqi can exceed two meters in height. 427
Society and Culture
Class System
Kaqi society is divided into rigid hereditary ranks:
- Commoners — the largest and physically weakest class; restricted to underground cities. 471
- Warriors — live on the surface; the invasion fleet that attacked the Solar System was composed of warriors. A warrior’s family is elevated to warrior status. 471
- Elites — exceptionally powerful combatants selected from Kaqi tribes. 427
- Royal Guards — a rank above elites. 471
- Council of Elders and Chieftains — the highest identified social ranks. 471
Movement between surface and underground cities is tightly controlled, with ordinary travel largely limited to officials and business personnel. 471
Settlements and Industry
Kaqi cities use separated surface and underground zones. Underground cities can be substantially larger and more technologically advanced than their surface counterparts. 469 471
Kama Star served as the Kaqi’s principal industrial world, containing seventy percent of their industry, surface factories, underground worker cities, and extensive solar-panel infrastructure. More than seven billion Kaqi workers and miners reportedly lived there before the planet’s destruction. 477
Archaeology
A Kaqi archaeological team, jointly affiliated with all tribes, excavates ancestral ruins throughout the galaxy. Recovered technology supplied the Kaqi with advanced armor, weapons, reactors, thrusters, alloys, field-control devices, and the mothership deployed against the Solar System. 474 475
Combat Capabilities
Physical Strength and Speed
Kaqi physical strength greatly exceeds that of unenhanced humans, particularly when combined with powered armor. Their elite assassins were selected from roughly one in every hundred thousand Kaqi warriors and could overpower Bio-Armor-equipped Death Soldiers. 427
- Kaqi infantry can withstand artillery barrages that would devastate ordinary troops; direct hits remain lethal. 453
- Their reaction speed permits them to intercept armor-piercing rounds with heated spears. 416
- Their projectile-tracking capability has a processing limit: one Kaqi soldier could cut three bullets apart but was left unable to respond to simultaneous melee attacks. 416
- Kaqi physiology and armor initially gave them a decisive advantage in melee combat against Federation Marines. 453
Spear Combat
Kaqi soldiers commonly wield double-ended spears with blades that can heat to a red glow.
- Heated spear-blades can pierce Federation Bio-Armor Suits. 427
- Spears can be used to block blades, bat away bullets, and conduct close-quarters boarding actions. 416
- Kaqi soldiers attempted to counter firearms by physically deflecting incoming rounds with their spears. 453
Powered Armor
Kaqi power armor substantially augments an already formidable species.
- Elite units use laboratory-produced upgraded armor unavailable to ordinary forces. 427
- Their armor is powered by a specialized nuclear reactor whose energy output differs from human technology. 428
- Armor can be defeated by high-frequency, heated blades striking its weak points or connection points. 416 453
- Without their beam weapons and heated blades, Kaqi forces were judged far less dangerous by the Republic. 462
Boarding and Infiltration
Kaqi doctrine initially emphasized direct warship boarding and laser weaponry. 412
- Fighters can pierce enemy warships and deploy Kaqi soldiers directly into interior corridors. 416
- Their four arms, compound eyes, and spears make them dangerous in confined shipboard engagements. 416
- Kaqi infiltration craft use high-refresh external displays, image preloading, and engine shutdown during acceleration to remain concealed. 426
- Elite assassination teams were divided into five-member cells for decapitation strikes against corporate, government, and military leadership. 426
Technology and Equipment
- Powered armor — nuclear-reactor-powered combat armor, including rare laboratory-built elite variants. 427 428
- Heated spears — double-ended weapons with high-temperature blade modes. 416
- Laser weapons — a principal Kaqi ranged weapon, though strongly affected by environmental conditions. 412
- Kaqi fighters — four-spiked spacecraft with nutrient-fluid cockpits and fuel-based thrusters; they were assessed as likely incapable of atmospheric flight. 401
- Infiltration spacecraft and landing pods — cloaked craft designed for covert atmospheric entry and decapitation operations. 426
- Motherships — warships built from technology recovered from ancestral ruins; one later used a light-screen shield and more than a thousand nuclear-explosion engines to destroy densely packed Kaqi vessels. 474 437
- Archaeological equipment — advanced armor and weapons mass-produced from recovered ruin technology, issued to excavation teams to overcome ancient defensive systems. 474
History
The Kaqi Clan Alliance launched an invasion of the Solar System using a fleet built around boarding combat, laser weaponry, and massed fighters. Federation Marines repelled early boarding attempts despite the Kaqi’s superior physical abilities, exploiting coordinated ambushes and heated vibration blades against Kaqi armor. 416
Following the capture of their mothership, Kaqi elites infiltrated Blue Star to assassinate Federation political, military, and corporate leaders. Four elites penetrated Tang Shizhe’s villa, killed multiple Death Soldiers, and mortally wounded Tang Shizhe before his fusion with Kaqi DNA transformed him into a creature capable of killing the assassins. 426 427 428
The Kaqi war effort was then fractured by internal conflict. A reinforcement fleet attacked the Kaqi Expeditionary Force, later revealed to have been controlled by Gawen Nematodes parasitizing Kaqi hosts. 441 448 Faced with the rebel fleet, Expeditionary Force commander Kaka Isakanisar Luca agreed to a temporary alliance with the Human Federation. 445 446
After the defeat of the Gawen Nematodes’ fleet, Kaqi representatives formally surrendered to the Human Federation. The Federation annexed the Kaqi and was renamed the Galactic Co-Prosperity Republic. 459 462
Surviving Kaqi later lived throughout Republic territory, particularly in Mars’s Kaqi Autonomous Region. Their strength made Kaqi warriors sought-after bodyguards and mercenaries, while the Kaqi Self-Rescue Association sought to restore the species’ population. 485 The association was subsequently dissolved, and its president received a life sentence for treason. 491
By Chapter 615, the Kaqi were identified as the Republic’s third-largest race and residents of Mars. Kaqi and human rebels launched an independence war against the Republic. 615
Notable Quotes
“Humans, when we invade your homeworld, we will slaughter all your loved ones!” 416
Trivia
- Kaqi names commonly begin with “Ka” because their mandibles naturally produce clicking sounds. 445 481
- The Kaqi’s Cosmic Balance Theory holds that lifespan, strength, and reproductive ability cannot all be maximized simultaneously. 464
- Kaqi infected by Gawen Nematodes are not necessarily acting of their own will; the parasites inhabit their brains and may retain the skills and memories of their hosts. 462 471
