Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was a level 29 Soul Grand Master whose martial soul, Luo Sanpao, was a malignant mutation connected to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Despite being over fifty, he remained unable to surpass level 29. He built a reputation as a Martial Soul Hall-certified theory master and taught the Shrek students, including Tang San. 87 89

Following Zhao Wuji's death, Yu Xiaogang restrained Shrek's immediate desire for revenge against Lan. He concluded that Lan could not plausibly have killed a level 76 Soul Saint alone and suspected that a Spirit Saint-level—or stronger—guardian was protecting him. He ordered the group to investigate Lan and focus on cultivation rather than confront him recklessly. 53 61

When Lan appeared at Yu Xiaogang's public disciple-acceptance event, Yu attempted to recruit him after sensing his Soul Sage-level aura. Lan instead exposed Yu's Luo Sanpao martial soul and level 29 cultivation before the public, causing his first major loss of reputation in Heaven Dou City. 87 88 89

Yu's hostility toward Lan escalated into repeated schemes. He sought Tang Hao's assistance in killing Lan during the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, intended to exploit the separation between Lan and his powerful allies, and later relied on Tang Chen as part of an arena ambush. 147 257

During the tournament, Yu placed his confidence in Shrek's Seven-in-One Fusion Skill and publicly asserted that it could overcome Lan's Soul Sage cultivation. Lan's overwhelming strength and Shrek's defeat shattered this confidence, driving Yu to seek vengeance through Tang Hao, Bibi Dong, and Martial Soul Hall. 168 179

Yu was severely injured amid the conflict with Martial Soul Hall: Light Feather Douluo severed his arm, and Lan later maimed him again. Rather than accept responsibility, Yu blamed Lan for refusing to save him and became increasingly dependent on Bibi Dong's protection. 212 213 226 244

After Yu Yuanzhen's death, Yu's grief deepened his hatred of Lan. He ordered Tang San to kill Shui Bing'er and Shui Yue'er during the elimination round, intending to retaliate against Lan through those close to him. 248 250

Yu later became the Imperial Preceptor of the Heaven Dou Empire under Emperor Xue Beng. The position gave him authority over the court's Soul Masters and enabled him to promote himself as Heaven Dou's defender while spreading propaganda that portrayed Lan as a public enemy. 414 415

At Sea God Island, Yu expected his alleged wisdom and mutated martial soul to earn him a Red Grade or Sea God Nine Trials assessment. The Sea Horse Sacred Pillar gave no response at all; Xiao Bai confirmed that he did not qualify even for the lowest White Grade trial. 397 398

Lan publicly dismantled Yu's theories and reputation in Heaven Dou City, accusing him of taking Martial Soul Hall archive materials through Bibi Dong and repackaging them as his own research. Yu could not demonstrate how an ordinary low-grade martial soul could be trained into a Title Douluo, and the crowd turned against him. 417 418

After Lan slaughtered Xue Beng's imperial forces and executed the emperor, Yu tried to bargain for his life by offering his theory, training expertise, and even Liu Erlong and Bibi Dong. Lan rejected him and killed him with a sword strike, splitting his body in two before burying the square beneath ice and snow. 424 425 426

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is described as a middle-aged man with an ordinary, stiff-looking face and a reserved, scholarly bearing. His appearance changes noticeably with his status and circumstances. 414

  • Wore coarse linen robes and kept a crew cut during his period of decline. 414
  • Later dressed in brocade robes embroidered with golden cloud patterns and wore a white jade crown as Imperial Preceptor. 414
  • Often maintained a rigid expression and wore glasses. 209
  • Lost an arm during the conflict surrounding Martial Soul Hall and was later further maimed. 212 244

Personality

Yu Xiaogang presents himself as calm, wise, and authoritative, especially before students and the public. He is capable of caution when assessing threats; after Zhao Wuji's death, he stopped Shrek from charging blindly after Lan and directed them toward investigation and cultivation instead. 53 61

However, his confidence is closely tied to public recognition. He repeatedly reacts with panic, hysteria, or rage when his cultivation, talent, martial soul, and theories are challenged. His public persona collapses after Lan exposes his level 29 soul power, his inability to gain a Sea God assessment, and the origins of his theoretical work. 89 397 398 417

As his losses accumulate, Yu becomes vindictive and manipulative. He seeks stronger figures to eliminate Lan, exploits Bibi Dong's feelings for his protection, and ultimately offers to betray Liu Erlong and Bibi Dong to save himself. 147 230 425

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

Yu Xiaogang's martial soul is Luo Sanpao, a pig-like malignant mutation associated with the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. 88 89

  • Luo Sanpao visibly trembles and whimpers under Lan's aura, apparently recognizing Lan as a natural predator. 87
  • Yu identifies it as a mutation of the clan's top-tier martial soul; later, he describes it as a mutation of the Golden Sacred Dragon. 88 396
  • Its perceived weakness and appearance are central to the public humiliation Yu suffers. 89

Martial Soul Theory

Yu is publicly known as the continent's “Grandmaster” of martial soul theory and promotes the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. 87 415

  • He trained and advised the Shrek Seven Devils, especially Tang San. 53 165
  • He advocates the principle that “there are no useless martial souls, only useless Soul Masters.” 416
  • Qian Renxue states that Yu's theories were stolen from Martial Soul Hall's Core Archive, while Lan publicly alleges that Yu reorganized and claimed the archive's accumulated research as his own. 237 417
  • His understanding of spirit-ring theory is shaken when Lan reveals a gold-red hundred-thousand-year spirit ring that contradicts Yu's expectation of pure red. 209
  • His claimed expertise does not translate into personal advancement: he remains a level 29 Soul Grand Master. 89 398

Strategy and Influence

Yu relies more on planning, reputation, and powerful allies than direct combat.

  • He organizes Shrek's search for Lan and instructs the group not to expose themselves prematurely. 61
  • He attempts to use Tang Hao and later Tang Chen against Lan. 147 257
  • As Imperial Preceptor, he uses public lectures, storytellers, notices, and anti-@@REF_ENTITY_11979224@@ propaganda to shape opinion in Heaven Dou City. 414 415
  • His influence repeatedly depends on Bibi Dong's attachment to him, a leverage point Lan later exploits. 230 321
