Background / History

Mai lost both parents at a young age: her mother died shortly after her birth, while her father sacrificed himself during the Nine-Tails Incident to save Genma Shiranui. Genma and his wife Chiyuki subsequently raised her as their daughter. 27

She is the granddaughter of Shiranui Hanzo, the former Shiranui clan head. Before his death, Hanzo named the still-young Mai as his successor and entrusted her to Genma until she could assume the position herself. Her status as the clan’s current head draws attention from Konoha’s major clans. 27

Genma trained Mai in Shiranui Style Ninjutsu and Bone Style Fist. She displayed exceptional aptitude in both disciplines and was recognized within her clan as a “genius girl.” 27

During the Land of Rivers mission, Mai, Genma, and Sakura are placed under outside control. Kamizuki identifies them beneath their masks and later frees them after defeating Senju Yuhito. 51 57

Surveillance of Kamizuki

Mai secretly follows Kamizuki and challenges him to test his true strength. Their fight showcases her fan, umbrella, and fire-based techniques, though Kamizuki ultimately defeats and restrains her. 62 63

Kamizuki discovers that she was not working for Danzō; the Third Hokage had assigned her to monitor him. After the misunderstanding is resolved, Mai is officially assigned to Kamizuki’s squad. 63

Anbu Reunion and Romance

Mai returns to Anbu after the Third Hokage’s death. During a Land of Lightning mission, Kamizuki rescues her Anbu squad from four pursuers, prompting her to recognize that she wants to confess her feelings to him. 140
