"Eight?!"
"Are you kidding me?"
The moment Lao Zhao spoke, everyone's heart rate spiked. The lighting in the Midnight Escape scenario was exceptionally dim, and as they looked at one another, their bodies seemed to freeze in place.
"Where is the eighth person?"
"Don't panic!" At this critical moment, Feng Ge pulled out his phone, intending to turn it on. From the other side of the corridor, the sound of chains—which had been faint and intermittent—suddenly became rapid and urgent.
"Someone's there!"
Just as Feng Ge unlocked his screen, a monster covered in blood appeared at the corner of the corridor.
The timing was perfect; it was as if the monster had known their exact location in advance.
"What is that thing!"
Beneath a blood-stained doctor's uniform, a heavy chain dragged along the floor. The monster kept its head lowered, clutching a hammer that dripped with red liquid.
Everyone grew tense, save for Feng Ge, who managed to maintain a shred of composure. Ignoring Chen Ge's earlier warning, he switched on his phone's flashlight right there in the House of Horrors.
A beam of white light cut across the corridor, illuminating the monster from afar.
The light drew the creature's attention. As her black hair slid to the sides, she slowly raised her head.
In that instant, everyone's hair stood on end. The monster possessed a face stitched together from countless male features, with visible suture marks crisscrossing her entire visage!
The moment the light hit her, the monster seemed stimulated. She went berserk, sprinting toward them while brandishing the blood-grooved hammer!
Chains clattered against the walls, and the heavy, rapid thud of footsteps echoed through the narrow hallway. The morbid, frenzied figure drew closer and closer. Among the forensic students, someone—it was unclear who—stepped back first, triggering a chain reaction. No one cared about finding the extra person anymore; they scrambled and fled in every direction.
Some ducked into nearby rooms, some bolted for the stairs to hide on the second floor, and others ran straight into the first floor in one breath.
The scenario was dark and lightless, and everyone was terrified by the monster behind them. The sound of chains and footsteps drawing ever closer sent them into a panic.
Seeking advantage and avoiding harm is a biological instinct, as well as the guarantee of a species' continuous evolution. When their brains perceived the arrival of danger, they instinctively chose to flee.
Xiao Hui had been standing near the stairs. When the monster charged, she was at a loss, but then the man standing next to her suddenly bolted toward the lower floor.
Overwhelmed by fear, Xiao Hui didn't think twice and followed right behind him, her only thought being to avoid being caught by the monster.
She had no idea where her phone had been tossed. The calm and composure the forensic students had feigned earlier were shattered, and screams erupted throughout the corridor.
People were scattered, and chaos reigned.
Xiao Hui followed the figure in front of her to the first floor. The screaming from the third floor above had not ceased, and as chains struck the stairs, it seemed the monster had entered the hallway as well!
Not daring to look back, Xiao Hui quickened her pace, sticking close to the figure in front of her for fear of being left behind.
Eerie background music played in her ears, and with the constant screaming, anxiety and terror slowly engulfed Xiao Hui. She finally felt true fear.
The more she felt this way, the less she dared to remain alone.
She pushed herself to keep up with the figure ahead. In the dim, terrifying Haunted House, that figure became her only reliance.
"If two people are together, no matter what happens, we can look out for each other."
Xiao Hui couldn't bear the thought of being left alone in the House of Horrors. To prevent that from happening, she bit her lip, accelerated again, and reached out to grab the person's clothing.
The sound of chains clashing behind them drew closer. The person leading her reached the first floor and ducked into a random room.
"A dead end?" Xiao Hui paused at the doorway, but the man beside her didn't hesitate and dove into the room's only wardrobe.
At this point, Xiao Hui only had two choices: flee alone, or hide in the closet with him.
The sound of chains dragging on the floor grew clearer, and she scrambled into the wardrobe as well.
As the doors closed, it felt as if she had entered another world—quiet and pitch-black. The only thing that brought her comfort was the presence of a companion.
Her makeup had long since smeared. Xiao Hui covered her mouth, peering out through the gap in the doors.
The chains dragged along the floor. The doctor in the blood-stained coat stopped at the doorway, the hammer tapping against the doorframe as the stitched-together face leaned into the room.
Xiao Hui's heart hammered against her ribs. She bit her finger, huddled in the corner of the closet, and prayed silently, Don't come over, please don't come over.
Perhaps God heard her plea; the doctor only glanced inside before turning and leaving with her hammer.
Her heart finally settled, and Xiao Hui let out a breath of relief. She gently tapped the arm of the person beside her: "The monster doesn't seem to have found us. Let's wait a moment, then go reunite with the others."
Only Xiao Hui's voice echoed in the cramped closet. After receiving no response for a long time, she realized something was wrong and turned her head.
The man hiding in the closet with her had a well-proportioned build—neither fat nor thin.
"It's not Monkey or Lao Zhao. Feng Ge is taller than him, and He Shan is shorter." Xiao Hui tentatively whispered, "Lao Song?"
Still, there was no response. Xiao Hui's heart skipped a beat: "Lao Zhao said there was one extra person among us..."
Blood rushed to her head, her chest tightened, and she felt as if she couldn't breathe. Xiao Hui pulled her phone from her pocket and, using the faint, cold light of the screen, shone it toward her side.
In the dark, enclosed closet, a face as pale as paper—a face she had never seen before—was staring at her without blinking.
The phone slipped from her fingertips. After two or three seconds of absolute silence, a scream that threatened to pierce the eardrums erupted from the wardrobe!
Xiao Hui scrambled backward, but the space in the closet was limited. She slammed her head directly against the back panel.
Whether from the pain or the terror, this stylish, sexy senior student slumped to the floor, clutching her head, looking as if she were about to pass out.
"I told you all long ago not to play with your phones in my Haunted House." Chen Ge pushed open the closet door, picked up the phone from the floor, and stuffed it into the girl's pocket. He then pulled out his own phone to contact Xu Wan: "Xiao Wan, don't let them come to the first floor for now."
After giving his instructions, he carried Xiao Hui on his back into the bathroom, pushed open the bathtub, and sent her outside the scenario through the staff passage.
"We are indeed a bit short-handed." After finding a towel to cushion the back of Xiao Hui's head, Chen Ge re-entered the Midnight Escape scenario.
"There are six people left now."
Chen Ge restored the passage entrance and dialed Xu Wan's number: "Xiao Wan, where are you right now?"
"There is someone in the first room at the corner on the left side of the second floor. I'll force him out in a moment; you can flank him from the right and give him a 'surprise'."
"Xiao Wan, you've learned to be bad."
"Compared to the boss, I still have a lot to learn."
